Idiotville #204: Saying "Thoughts and Prayers" is the Same as Doing Nothing
THE JUMP: Dill is back in the pilot seat and is joined in the Hall of Justice by Anna and Brent. This is a discussion of the recent mass shooting in Texas (as well as other events) and the terrible but expected reaction from the right. We’re passionate about this subject, but we do ease into it a little. First things first: an update on the absence of a show last week and our hardware update.  Some topics: Lauren Boebert and her parentage, education, and moronic takes. This, of course, leads into a digression about Karl Malone.  The country has been willing to act in the past when things have happened (TSA Anyone?) but the right refuses to do anything other than offer meaningless gestures and lame talking points on this one.  We address the normal things: Semantic arguments, arming teachers, armed guards, and so on.  Why are background checks controversial? Why is the argument always “more guns”? We can’t legislate intelligence.  THE ATACOLYPSE FOOD TRUCK BEER SEGMENT: Juice Box Boy from Hamburg Brewing is our beer this week! It’s an excellent choice by Brent. Listen in to see how we rated it! Also, to find out where the Conquistador is! If video is your thing, check out the Beer Segment on our YouTube channel, link below! AFTER THE BREAK: Mike Kelly has an epic bad take that managed to age badly in a mere 3 days. Why is the NRA convention the only place they don’t want guns? Lee Greenwood pulled out of that event, and if he’s out, maybe they should change strategy. The bottom line is: We can’t let this blow over.  ============ Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville? Idiotville #203: Hardship is our Identity, with Patrick Fisher
THE JUMP: Ryan is sitting in for Dill as host again, and he’s joined in the studio by Brent and Anna. We’re joined in the studio by the Executive Director of Erie Arts & Culture, Patrick Fisher! Patrick is Brent’s cousin, and they reminisce about Patrick being initiated into the family, as well as the drawbacks of living in a small town.  How did he move away from the small-town roots and become who he is now? We talk a bit about the art community in Erie and how it’s changed, and how he’s helping that move forward.  THE ATACOLYPSE FOOD TRUCK BEER SEGMENT: Pineapple Resin from 6-Point Brewery! Listen in to find out what the team thinks of it! Also, listen in to find out the answer to the most pressing question of our time: Where’s the Conquistador? AFTER THE BREAK: How do you define community? Who’s doing stuff in Erie? Patrick has his hand on the pulse of the city. ============ Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville? Idiotville #202: The Sprite Challenge and Roe v Wade with Kristy Gnibus
THE JUMP: Ryan is sitting in for Dill as host again, and he’s joined in the studio by Brent, Anna, and Ted Brogan. Our special guest is teacher, political candidate, and entrepreneur Kristy Gnibus. Through the whole episode, the gang attempts the Sprite Challenge. This is as ridiculous as you think.  Kristy has moved to a new position as a teacher, working in an all-virtual school that services students all across Pennsylvania.  The crew discusses the recent school rankings and how public education is faring throughout the country.  Why don’t we value education for all? THE ATACOLYPSE FOOD TRUCK BEER SEGMENT: The crew samples Beach Gear Blonde Ale from Voodoo Brewery! Also, listen in to find out the answer to the most pressing question of our time: Where’s the Conquistador? AFTER THE BREAK: We talk about the impending overturning of Roe v Wade and how that can affect women and their reproductive freedoms? Anna and Kristy both have strong opinions about women being forced to carry a child to term, but then completely abandoned by the system.  ============ Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville? Idiotville #201: Nick and Chris from "Flagship Stories"
THE JUMP: Brent, Anna, and Ryan welcome Chris and Nick from the “Flagship Stories” pod! We had to reschedule this interview from January – we all had Covid.  We reminisce a bit about the last time Nick made an appearance. Where do they record?  Are younger students listening to Podcasts? How did they each get into the self-broadcasting game? What is the “Beehive”? THE ATACOLYPSE FOOD TRUCK BEER SEGMENT: The gang samples Wavelength IPA from Equilibrium Brewery! Also listen in to find out the answer to the most pressing question of our time: Where’s the Conquistador? AFTER THE BREAK: More discussion of the Beehive and how it came to be, as well as extensive discussion of the Erie Podcasting game.  ============ Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville? Idiotville #200: LeAnna Nieratko, the CEO of the Erie Food Co-op!
THE JUMP: Our 200th Episode! Dill, Brent, Anna, Ted, and Ryan are at CAM this week! We’re joined in studio by the CEO/General Manager of the Erie Food Co-op, LeAnna Nieratko! We have a great conversation with her about the history and purpose of the Co-op: What’s it’s history? What is happening in the present? Where could they be going? What exactly IS a food co-op? LeAnna brings us up to speed on all those things and more, including working with the EDDC, staffing and wages, and whether or not she’s ever had to deal with the national chain with a similar name. THE ATACOLYPSE FOOD TRUCK BEER SEGMENT: We sample “Misery Whip” from Logyard Brewing out of Kane PA. It’s a Double New England-style IPA, and it’s a good one! Also listen in to find out the answer to the most pressing question of our time: Where’s the Conquistador? AFTER THE BREAK: Where DID the money come from?  LeAnna talks about the plusses and minuses of the new location on North Park Row. She puts to rest the narrative that “Nobody wants to work” in this economy. It’s all about paying people what they’re worth and allow them to have and utilize the benefits they have.  ============ Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville? Idiotville #194: The Conquistador Triumphant!
THE JUMP: Dill, Anna, and Brent are in the studio with their all-time favorite guest, the CONQUISTADOR OF TACOS, Chris Kaye, owner of Atacolypse Food Truck! Chris didn’t bring us tacos, but he brings the noise for this episode!  He’ll be at Erie Ale Works on Saturday, March 19 for his first event of the year! Chris talks all about his plans for the year, this season is already starting to fill up for him. What’s on the menu? Apparently, chicken.  Prices of everything (shrimp, chicken, gas) are increasing like mad. How is Atacolypse going to adjust? AFTER THE BREAK: Chris has had to adjust his social media presence, from Facebook, to a website, to a hybrid model – Anna has good tips for any small business owner on this!  (Why haven’t WE done that with Anna? Probably because she’s a Russian spy.) Why is finding a job so different? Pounding the pavement just doesn’t make it work in this digital world.  There’s been a bunch of food trucks, and Chris talks a little history of Erie’s FT scene.  He’s going to be at Erie Ale Works, Black Monk, Altered State, and both hospitals all summer! He’s never had to put new tires on the food truck, and if there’s a problem with refrigeration, it is obviously the compressor. ================================================================================ Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville? Idiotville #190: Justin Dombrowski, author of "Murder and Mayhem in Erie"
THE JUMP: It’s a packed studio this week with Dill, Brent, Anna, Ryan, and Ted! We’re joined by local author and crime historian, Justin Dombrowski, who’s got a book coming out in June! The book is called “Murder and Mayhem in Erie” and will be a must-read for local true-crime enthusiasts! Our discussion with Justin is wide-ranging: How did he get into this genre? He talks a bit about his process, who’s helped him along the way, and who may have hindered him.  We get into some more well-known crimes from the last 40 years, including the Bob Owens murder and the hit on Frank “Bolo” Dovishaw.  THE BEER SEGMENT! This week we sample “All Together” which is a Double Dry Hopped IPA from The Other Half Brewery in Brooklyn, NY. It’s a 6.5% ABV that we really enjoyed! You can listen to the Beer Segment live on Saturday mornings or catch it anytime on Facebook!  AFTER THE BREAK: Justin breaks down his creative process and how he pared down a list of 25 cases to 6 – this means there are plenty of cases for a follow-up! He gets into some of the other famous murders that didn’t quite make the cut. Did you know? Erie’s first African-American police officer was hired around 1900.  How much has forensic investigation changed over the years? How much Mafia is there in Erie? Has Erie ever had a serial killer? You can keep up with Justin on his Facebook Page: Shadows from the Boulevard! =====================================================================Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville? Idiotville #189: Mathew Turner from the Erie Seawolves!
It’s Brent, Ryan, and Anna this week! Our in-studio guest is the Assistant Food and Beverage Director for the Erie Seawolves, Mathew Turner! Mathew gives us a brief bio, then talks how he got involved with the Seawolves. It’s a more than full-time job during the season, to be certain! There’s always a push for new and different food and drink options at the ballpark, and we’re told there will be more alcoholic slushies available this year. We vote to bring back the cotton candy hot dog! The food and drink options, as well as fun promos are always a driving force for Minor League clubs, and the promotions and on-field shenanigans lead to some hilarious stories! There’s been a ton of improvements at UPMC Field: fans have seen what’s there for them, but there’s also been renovations for the clubhouse and some creature comforts for the players! THE BEER SEGMENT!A collab between our favorite local brewery, Lavery, and Erie Apparel, called “It’s Okay to Love Erie Winter Lager” is the beer of choice this week! Listen in to see what grade we gave it! Also make sure to catch our live stream on Facebook every Saturday morning! AFTER THE BREAK: Brent quizzes our guest on his favorite promotion, the “That Thing You Do” event at the ballpark last summer, and this segues into talk about what promotional pitch meetings are like! We talk some more about the additions at the ballpark, including the new team store, which gives the stadium a more “big league” feel! Brent and Mathew talk some famous players who’ve come through Erie, and also about the relationship between Erie and their MLB parent club, the Detroit Tigers. Finally, Brent and Ryan pitch their promotion for next summer, and yes, it will involve Mike Balko racing an Olympic-level athlete while wearing a hot dog costume! =====================================================================Do you feel like you aren't getting enough Idiotville?
