Episode 63 - Tanner Anderson (Obsequiae, Panopticon, Celestiial)
Tanner Anderson.  I hate the word talent, but people like Tanner make me rethink my aversion to the concept.  I've been fortunate enough to call Tanner a friend for quite awhile now, and am overjoyed to watch him evolve and grow as an artist particularly with Obsequiae.  If you like "Non Serviam", with a touch of "Skydancer", and a sprinkle of "His Majesty at the Swamp," and if you don't need me to tell you what bands made those records, this episode, this band, and this man, are for you. Tanner also treats us to an exclusive premiere of a new Obsequiae song, just for I Hate Music!  So, please pass the aux to Tanner, and join us as we discuss Pizza Thrash, tons of obscure records, why the demo is always better, and the relevance of Dungeon Synth in 2022. -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Episode 62 - Daniel Lake (Author of USBM)
Daniel Lake is a contributor to Decibel Magazine, but as of late, he has been more in the public eye due to his book, USBM.  The book dives into the motivations, histories, and music of a number of heavy hitters in the United States Black Metal scene, and I wanted to learn more about his process of researching and writing this gem.   So, please pass the aux to Daniel, and join us as we talk about black metal, travel, thrash metal, and Satan. -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Episode 61 - Pete Lee (Lawnmower Deth)
Lawnmower Deth.  Often ignored, usually misunderstood, but has been a staple in my ears and in my heart since the early '90s.  The boys from Nottingham took quite the hiatus and are back with a new album after a 28 year gap; their first record since 1993's "Billy."  In this episode I talk with Pete Lee, vocalist for Lawnmower Deth, and we listen to a couple new songs, an old song, and discuss various things such as bread rolls, the importance of the Grindcrusher comp, Dan Seagrave, and why the band took such a long break. So, pass the aux to Pete, and join us for a delightfully punk/thrash conversation and hear why Lawnmower are better than ever! Closing song "Raise your Snails" from the upcoming Lawnmower Deth album 'Blunt Cutters' out January 28th on Cherry Red Records. -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production** https://www.earthinsound.org/

Episode 60 - Dylan Neal (Thief)
On Episode 46, Dylan Neal of Thief came on the show and played us a bunch of crazy music.  This time, Dylan and I sit down and listen to the new Thief album recently released by Prophecy Productions entitled "The 16 Deaths of my Master." Dylan shares with us production techniques, reveals hidden gems within the songs, and we discuss the themes and ideas within the music. This is, without a doubt, my album of the year, and has been in constant rotation at my house, and in my car, as well as being incessantly in my head.  Dylan is a fascinating person, an engaging artist, and "The 16 Deaths of my Master" is a staggering work of heartbreaking genius. Please pass the aux to Dylan, and join us as we discuss our teenage years, geek out over plug-ins and VSTs, and delve into the world of Thief.  https://thief-official.bandcamp.com/ -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production** https://www.earthinsound.org/

Episode 59 - Karl Cordtz (Feral Season, Occlith, CHRCH)
Feral Season is good.  Feral Season is damn good.  The band's debut album, "Rotting Body In The Range Of Light," out on Profound Lore records harkens back to the second wave of Norwegian Black Metal, but without truly biting the style, or sound.   Karl and I delve into a couple songs off of the album, discuss the writing process and the themes behind the record, an manage to listen to some of his doom-death band, Occlith, as well. So pass the aux to Karl, and join us as we nerd out over Enslaved, Mayhem, EVPs, and absolutely gush over the new Cannibal Corpse record.   https://feralseason.bandcamp.com/ -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production** https://www.earthinsound.org/

Episode 58 - “Listener Requests Part III” with guest Ione Walton
I always assumed that episodes with my daughters would not be as engaging, or appreciated, as episodes with notable musicians, but listener feedback has been overwhelmingly positive for these breaks in the normal programming.  So, we are back with “Listener Requests Part III” with Ione Walton.  These installments tend to blend podcasting with sound collage at times, and this is no different.  Ione and I go through some listener recommendations, and we each play a couple of choice cuts as well.   Pass the aux to Ione and I as we critique your choices in music, and discuss manta rays, chores, vaccinations, and food carts.

Episode 57 - Hunter Ginn and Gael Pirlot (Canvas Solaris, Plague Psalm, Gorging Shade)
Today we tell the humidity to take a hike, and we delve into the minds of Hunter Ginn and Gael Pirlot; two linchpins in a long-running yet vibrant collective based out of Georgia.  Together these two are members of Canvas Solaris, Plague Psalm, and Gorging Shade, and through the duration of this episode, we listen to, and discuss, each of these fascinating projects. Hunter, Gael, and I also talk about Sepultura, Samael, and ponder the very nature of instrumental music.  So please pass the aux to Hunter and Gael, grab yourself a biscuit or two, and prepare yourself for some awesome music, and even more nerdy obsessive music discussion.   https://canvassolaris.bandcamp.com/releases -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production** https://www.earthinsound.org/

Episode 56 - Toby Driver (Kayo Dot, Alora Crucible, Vaura)
Toby Driver is one of the most engaging and important musicians currently active.  His resume is astounding, his persistence is unmatched, and his work is always challenging, fresh, and most importantly, inspirational and enjoyable.  Toby may be best known for being the leader of the often confounding Kayo Dot, but his music spans many genres, bands and projects.   I sat down with Toby to discuss and listen to some of these bands that perhaps are lesser known than Kayo Dot.  We listen to a track from the upcoming Kayo Dot record on Prophecy Productions, as well as songs from Alora Crucible, Blood Mist, and a few others.  We also get into subjects such as touring, show attendance, and the European metal scene. So, please pass the aux to Toby, and join us in exploring the many facets of this man's career.   https://kayodot.bandcamp.com/ -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production** https://www.earthinsound.org/

Episode 55 - Michael and Hamilton of Genghis Tron
Don't call it a comeback.  Genghis Tron have returned after a 10 year hiatus with one of 2021's best and most compelling records, Dream Weapon.  The band has been through a lot of changes in that time, personally and musically, an even with line-up changes and a decade of growth and evolution, Genghis Tron still sound like themselves, and at the same time, sound like no one else. On this episode the remaining founding members, Hamilton Jordan and Michael Sochynsky, join me as we listen to their new album in its entirety.  We discuss the hiatus, the new members, the pit-falls of making an album during a pandemic, and what's next for the newly revitalized band. Please pass the aux to Michael and Hamilton, and come explore Dream Weapon with us. https://genghistron.bandcamp.com -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production** https://www.earthinsound.org/

Episode 54 - with guest Tim Smolens (High Castle Teleorkestra, Estradasphere)
I was first made aware of Tim Smolens when I discovered Estradasphere.  Tim was the bassist and producer for the incredible, genre-hopping, Bungle adjacent band.  As I delved further into the works of the various members, it became clear that Tim has a unique musical personality and vision.  Today, Tim has assembled a super group of sorts in High Castle Teleorkestra, featuring members that have played in Secret Chiefs 3, Farmers Market, Don Salsa and Mr. Bungle.   On this episode Tim and I listen to the two 7" singles that HCT has released so far, and Tim regales me with background stories, and production techniques.  We talk a lot of Bungle, Tim counts out crazy time signatures for me, and tells me about when he used his own keyboard to program the keys for Mr. Bungle's "California" tour. So please pass the aux to Tim, and join us for a masterclass in the music of High Castle Teleorkestra.   https://highcastleteleorkestra.com/   -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production** https://www.earthinsound.org/

Episode 53 - Dissecting Dream into Dust's "The Lathe of Heaven" with guest Derek Rush
Derek Rush is a lifer.  In my mind, that's about the biggest compliment an artist could receive.  Derek has been highly involved and productive in so many facets of music, it's not only daunting, its intimidating, and I can't conceive of him ever stopping.  Derek is perhaps best known for his work as the head of the Chthonic Streams label, and his music under the names of A Murder of Angels, December, Dream into Dust and Compactor, but he is also a DJ, a concert organizer, a promoter, and so much more. Today, we decided to listen to and discuss one of his most popular albums, Dream into Dust's "The Lathe of Heaven."  This is a deeply personal album for Derek and he guides us through the writing and motivation behind this album as we listen.  We also touch on topics such as Current 93, Kinkos, samplers and life outside the pandemic when we could tour. Please pass the aux to Derek and join us as we descend into the cinematic world of "The Lathe of Heaven." Episode 52 - Examining The Night Watch's "An Embarrassment of Riches" with guest Nathanael Larochette
Today guitar virtuoso Nathanael Larochette joins me to guide us through the twisted trails and rough seas charted by his band The Night Watch on their latest album, "An Embarrassment of Riches."  We listen to the album in its entirety; dissecting, discussing and reveling in the creative process.  You may know Nathanael from his work with Musk Ox, or perhaps his beautiful guitar interludes on Agalloch's last album, "The Serpent and the Sphere." Please pass the aux to Nathanael, and let his smooth Canadian voice sooth you into submission as we listen to his record and delve into the world, and adventure, that The Night Watch has created in "An Embarrassment of Riches."   -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Episode 51 - with guest Yee Loi
Today I am joined by British punkers Rose (age 13) and Matilda (age 11) who also happen to be sisters, and together they are known as Yee Loi.  Yee Loi are currently recording their debut album, but they really caught my attention on the internet with their fantastic Ramones, Thin Lizzy and Motorhead covers.   So please pass the aux to Rose and Matilda as they share a few of their covers, and discuss with me their favorite bands and how they got their start as young punk rockers.   -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast **I Hate Music is an Earth in Sound Production**

Episode 50 - “Override of the Overlooked” with guests Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn
This is like one of those cheesy '80s sitcom crossovers, but better... much better.  Jeff and Hunter, the two maniacs behind the insanely awesome and inspiring podcast, Radical Research, join me to celebrate I Hate Music's 50th episode!  I asked each of them to bring to the table a band or album that they love, but is largely ignored or derided, and I chose one as well.  We then shared these selections and discussed them. Jeff Wagner and I go way back.  We had a 'zine together in the '90s and have worked and interacted with each other in various capacities since.  Jeff has worked for a number of record labels, was the editor of Metal Maniacs, and is the author of "Soul On Fire - The Life And Music Of Peter Steele" as well as "Mean Deviation: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal."   Hunter is a rather new friend, but his wonderous drumming and intimidating vocabulary keeps me engaged almost daily.  He is the drummer for the fantastic band Canvas Solaris, and his boyish charm and southern drawl is a welcome addition to my life. So please pass your aux to Jeff and Hunter, and join us as we celebrate I Hate Music's 50th episode by sharing overlooked gems, discussing Impaled Nazarene's treatment of goats, and playing Metal Mad Libs.   -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. Episode 49 - “Listener Requests Part II” with guest Ione Walton
I really enjoy getting listener suggestions.  I typically get them via Email, but this morning Ione and I decided to get on FaceBook and Instagram and ask listeners to send in their recommendations as we record.  We received roughly 50 requests from all over the world, and I can say without hyperbole that this group of songs are by far the worst, most annoying, and painfully ignorant bunch of songs ever assembled. However, we love you for trying, and encourage you to keep trying to impress and amaze us.  But for now, please allow Ione and I to pass the aux to you, as we dissect and judge your taste in music.      -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast

Episode 48 - “A Brief History of the Israeli Metal Scene” with guest Tal Fried
Tal Fried is an Israeli native living in Tel Aviv.  Israel has a long and vibrant history of fascinating metal bands, rich with the culture of their homeland but also with an ear turned towards the metal community worldwide.  Unfortunately, a large number of these bands have remained unknown to metal fans outside of Israel, so I asked Tal to show me the hidden gems that lay next to The Mediterranean sea.   Many metal fans are familiar with Salem or Orphaned Land, but in this episode Tal takes us on a quick, but in depth, trip into the world of Israeli metal.  We discuss the importance of Israeli promoter Yishai Sweartz and the Agalloch performance in Tel Aviv almost a decade ago.  Tal plays death, black and doom metal bands from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and shares personal stories of his interactions with them as well as accounts of their live performances.    In no way is this meant to be an exhaustive history of metal in Israel.  This is simply the tip of the iceberg in a deeply rooted and passionate scene.  So pass the aux to Tal and listen as we share stories, fight xenophobia, and delve into the metal community in one of my favorite places in the world; Israel.    -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ https://www.instagram.com/i_hate_music_podcast/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast

Episode 47 - "Listener Requests" with guest Ione Walton
I stumbled across this lost recording the other day.  Ione and I recorded this right before the pandemic hit.  We were taking listener requests that had been Emailed in, but the pandemic and subsequent quarantine had distracted me, and the episode had become buried by time and dust, and forgotten... until now. Ione plays some music she likes, I play a little that I like, and we both critique and comment on the listener suggestions.  Unfortunately, since this episode was lost for so long, the information is quite out of date, but music is timeless, right? Come pass the aux with Ione and I as we cheer and jeer your awful selections, and make some poor selections ourselves.  Keep those suggestions and requests coming as we love your input, even when your taste is bad.    -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod #ihatemusicpodcast

Episode 46 - with guest Dylan Neal (Thief, Botanist)
When I first heard about Thief, I was skeptical.  I was about to embark on a short tour with one of Toby Driver's various projects, (Piggy Black Cross), and Toby told me Thief from Los Angeles would be joining.  That first night of tour Dylan and Thief stunned me with the craft of their songs, the passion in their performance, and I was instantly impressed with their unique and dynamic shows each night. Now, a few moons later, we have shared the stage a handful of times and Thief has cemented itself as one of my absolute favorite bands.  In 2019 Thief released "Map of Lost Keys" on Prophecy Productions.  The album is a rich and emotional dive into the musical mind of Dylan Neal, who writes and records all the music himself, but is joined by two others for live performances. Come listen to us get unhinged while we discuss production techniques, obscure bands from the Czech Republic, racism in art, and of course, share music... and don't forget to pass the aux!     -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli, performed by Billy Smeer. Episode 45 - “Quarantine Songs” Part II: The Reckoning
Life in quarantine rolls on, and so does the music.  Our first "Quarantine Songs" episode received a warm welcome, so we decided to follow it up, with the same basic format, but some slight changes.  Most notably, there are no listener submissions on this episode.  This episode is comprised of a handful of notable musicians, and people in the music industry sharing their quarantine picks with us.  I am tempted to tell you who will be bending your ears with tunes and talk, but I think its best to let the element of surprise have the upper hand here. I will say, this is a very diverse, eclectic and provocative mix of music, once again proving that the metal community at large, listens to a wide array of genres and styles.  So, grab your mask, some hand sanitizer, and fight the quarantine blues with the power of music!     -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod

Episode 44 - with guest Casey C-P — King Gizzard “Chunky Shrapnel Film” Special
We won't let this die, and neither will King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.  Casey C-P and I made a pact, a blood oath, that each time this band of scruffy Aussies makes a new album we will be there, just like the Jackson 5, to dissect, critique and perform a deep dive to the depths of degradation.  Nothing will keep us from recording a podcast each time King Gizzard completes a project.  Not snow, not rain, not COVID-19, so here we are, ready to inject our veins and flush our lungs with the disinfecting power of Australian music. This time, its not a proper album, but its a feature film that was set for a theatrical release before the world was consumed by isolation and social distancing requiring everyone to stand one Joey Ramone away from each other.  Now, offered up twice via Vimeo, for 24 hours only, the King Gizzard movie, "Chunky Shrapnel."  CC-P and I huddled up and through the magic of a conference bridge, joined forces once more to ask the prevailing question "What's with that awful band name?"   -------------------- "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli. -------------------- https://www.facebook.com/hatepod.music/ Email and listener suggestions to: hate.pod.music@gmail.com Donations to support our podcast: paypal.me/hatepod
