Join us this time as Sue considers buying a shotgun from Monica’s husband.  We talk about ACTS and PROVE, and the 3 F’s of buying a firearm, and note that you should always read the barrel to make sure that you know what gauge or caliber the firearm is, and what ammunition to use.  We also touch on the laws for buying and selling firearms in Canada.

Every activity has a language of its own.  Hunting is no exception.  How we talk about what we are doing is every bit important as anything else we do.  Sue and Monica go through a rapid fire discussion about the words we use, the words we are comfortable using and how we use language to show respect for themselves, the hunt and the animals we take.

Calling for game is fickle but fun.  Game species may come in to calling or they may stay away.  There are lots of calls you can use; mouth calls, flutes, box calls, pot calls and rattle devices.  There are also electronic calls.  Check the regs in your region to find out which calls can be used with which species and then look online for YouTube videos, ask your mentor, or go to a workshop to learn how and when to call for a particular species.

How do you find a hunting mentor?  We discuss some of the things we look for in a mentor, where to find one, and how to interact.  Learn about some places you may find people who can talk to you and what you should look for in a mentor.  As promised, we called the MNRF and found out that it IS legal to hunt from horseback in Ontario at the time of publication.  Always remember to thank your mentors!

What do hunters do in the off season?  We still participate in hunting related activities.  This week we are talking about cleaning up after the hunting season, reading material, on line games and apps , Google maps, laundry soap and telling some of our favourite tall tales.
