I may have missed the New Year date in line with the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese Zodiac’s calendar begins on 22nd January. It’s the Year of the Rabbit and so I took the opportunity to run my two Way of the Rabbit shows from way back in season 2 as bumper edition. The content still stands up but I apologise for the sound quality, which I have only been able to slightly improve.  So that just leaves me to say in my best possible Mandarin (please forgive me) Xīnnián hǎo and in Cantonese, as it was said in my school which had a lot of Hong Kong nationals, Gong hei fat choy. The penultimate episode of the Cakewalker quintology and the entire Jersey Joe Walcott story (first started in season four's trilogy, "Coal for Jersey Joe"). Ezzard Charles faces the pressure of being a heavyweight champion that followed the beloved Joe Louis. Meanwhile, Louis is forced out of retirement by severe financial problems. Christmas takes us full circle as we continue with the Jersey Joe Walcott story. We pick up with the build up to Jersey Joe's third attempt at the world heavyweight title. The National Boxing Association declares the position vacant with its former holder, Joe Louis, promoting a fight to determine the new champion. Jersey Joe takes on the "Cincinnati Cobra" Ezzard Charles. Along the way we look at the history of the left hook, boxing's great surprise attack forged through the gloved era and an apt metaphor for life. We also take a brief look at Two-Ton Tony Galento, one of the sport's most colourful figures, as he checks out the two new prospects. On this episode we look at peer pressure through the lens of fiction: how herd mentality or the need to fit in can influence otherwise rational and moral human beings to commit heinous crimes. Although all the references for this episode come from feature films, television programmes and literature, most are inspired by real events or are allegories for real events. Art can often offer a very helpful way to view ideas and the human condition. My desire with this piece is prompt thinking from a self-defence, defence of the self perspective. "Your pain in my heart" - It's not a likely quote to see flying around the self-protection subculture and industry, but when it comes to better managing potential violence such thinking makes a world of difference. It’s 5th February 1943 at the Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan. Sugar Ray Robinson enters the ring to face his latest opponent. Robinson has fought 40 professional bouts now, not losing one, and has been dazzling audiences since his amateur days. Tonight is a rematch.    The man standing across from the ring is Jake La Motta. The last time they met it he was described as a “human truck”. Robinson had won the match with what looked like relative ease on the scorecards and the audience had shown their approval. Giving away 10lbs, he had used his superior footwork and exemplified the art of boxing in the eyes of many. However, there were still others who betrayed they primal lust for the gladiatorial roots of pugilism. They saw no entertainment value in a fighter dancing outside of harm’s way. The real fight for them occurred in the pocket; the true test of warriors where the battle glory is earned. They asked what would happen if the truck caught up with the dancer.    Tonight they would find out. For this would be like no rematch Sugar Ray Robinson had fought in his career. When it was over, the previously smitten audiences would fall in love with the clash of styles and would clamour for more. Jake La Motta would later remark that he met Robinson so many times that they almost got married. It therefore seems apt that four of these meetings occur in February. Eight years and nine days to this fateful first rematch, the Robinson/LaMotta feud would culminate in dramatic fashion. Our New Year episode is an interview with Dr Gavriel Schneider, a leader in human based risk management and the psychology of risk. He is a serial entrepreneur and has been running his own businesses since 2001. He was recently listed as one of only twenty Global Influencers in Security Thought  Leadership for 2019 & 2020 as well as being awarded the risk consultant of the year 2019 (RMIA). He has conducted business in over 17 countries and provided a wide range of services for a very diverse client base ranging from heads of state to schoolteachers.  He holds numerous trainer, educational and coaching qualifications, has been a martial arts full contact champion, is a 7th degree black belt and has been an  Instructor  to  Royalty  Protection  teams, Presidential Protection teams and Military and Police Special Units. He was inducted member of the South African Martial Arts Hall of fame in 2004, is a former member of the South African full contact Taekwondo team (1995 - 1998), was a coach to the South African Muay Thai team competing in the 3rd Kings Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, black belt middleweight full contact champion in the DSJJ w      orld full contact championships held in Israel in 2000 and Advanced black belt (5th Degree and up) Silver medal winner at the DSSJ world full contact championships held in Israel in 2007. He was inducted into the official museum of martial arts history in Israel 2010. Our Christmas story concludes as Jersey Joe Walcott finds his "angel" in the unlikely form of a local gangster. He has had promises before but never one that comes with a basement full of coal. The second installment of the Christmas/New Year podcast story, "Coal for Jersey Joe".
