EP171: The Big Dilemma Facing the Hair Industry, with Joe Mills
The impact that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the hair industry and high street is beginning to show. For many of us, it’s scary times ahead for our businesses. And for todays episode we’re addressing this very real and sobering topic with former guest of the show, Joe Mills. With 50% less footfall for many cities and towns in the UK, both hair salons and barbershops are feeling the devastating effects of this on their businesses post lockdown. With a fast changing environment like never seen before for businesses, theirs a big dilemma facing the hair industry. Is that dilemma reducing outgoings, keeping the doors open or maybe pivoting the business model??? Returning back to the show today to discuss this topic in an open and very honest way is Joe Mills, a highly respected mens session stylist and owner of leading London hairdressers ‘The Lounge Soho’ and ‘Jo and Co Barbershop’. With workers and tourists not coming back into London in a COVID-19 world, Jo is seeing all around him the devastating effects of high street brands – big and small brands – closing down. And this is spreading to all areas of the UK. As Joe says, “If the hair industry doesn’t change soon then we’re heading for a car crash!” Rather than sitting there and waiting for that magic day when footfall comes flooding back into his business, Joe is fighting back through a new partnership with Shortcut App. This app is allowing him and his team to taking the professional outfit of his barbershop businesses directly into the clients homes. Joe will be sharing with us all today how this works, along with the debate on why now, more than ever, one voice is needed for an industry battling to keep it’s head above the water, just! It’s a gripping and honest listen on the harsh realities facing the UK high street in 2020.   Become a Patreon to get the Xtra Show 09 podcast: Think Outside the Box and Pivot, with Joe Mills     A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions.   Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. EP168: Mark Hayes – One of the Worlds Greatest Hair Educators
When some of the worlds greatest hair educators are mentioned, todays very special guest Mark Hayes is often one of them named. International Creative Director of the iconic Sassoon brand, Mark Hayes has inspired hairdressers around the world for over 40 years with his coaching and teaching. And today we’re to get a privileged insight into his story, going right back to when Mark began his love affair with hair in 1977 as he started out as an apprentice at the busy Sassoon London Salon on South Molton Street. For so many hairdressers old and young, the name Sassoon still has the reputation that has been built on developing and providing world-class education at their academies and education centres around the globe. Founded by the most well known and highly regarded hairdresser of all time , Vidal Sassoon, holding the Sassoon International Creative Director role is one of the mosts revered positions to have in hairdressing. In our conversation with Mark, we not only get to learn about how he went from the Sassoon apprentice program in 1979 to today leading the worldwide demand for Sassoon’s Hair Design, but also the psyche and characteristics that has seen he become one of the worlds greatest hair educators. What I love more than anything else from our interview with Mark, is how he places the client at the centre of everything he stands for in hairdressing. Technical excellence, yes, but to be an intuitive communicator who’s goal is to make everyone of his clients feel happy with what ever he creates for them. This is a special listen with a very special hairdresser. EP167: Workshop Quality Hair on Salon Appointment Time, with Niall Colgan
Confidence is the big hook of todays episode. More should I say, giving your team the confidence to know how good they really are, so that they can consistently deliver workshop quality hair on salon appointment time. When it comes to giving your team that confidence, you need a inspiring leader to steer the ship correctly to it’s dock. And on this episode of the podcast, we’re speaking with a truly inspirational leader. His name is Niall Colgan of Niall Colgan Hairdressing in Limerick, Ireland. Recognise that name? Back in 2019 we brought Niall onto the podcast. Little did we know then how big his podcast was to become. His hard-hitting story of how he battled with the addiction of alcohol, drugs and a suicide attempt grabbed the attention of many from around the world. To have the opportunity to bring Niall back onto the show is one I couldn’t resist. For Niall, he is so passionate that all hairdressers should be paid what they are worth. But to do this he says, “You need to be the best versions of yourself, everyday!” By being this means we need to deliver the very best hair work to every single client. Niall and his team of motivated hairdressers are being installed with this. Taking the inspiration of the hair work from the worlds leading educators, Niall Colgan Hairdressing are reproducing this workshop quality hair on the salon floor. In doing so means they are giving each client a high valued product and service every single time. And the result of this, hairdressers earning more money. Sounds good? As you dive in to this episode, put these words of Niall’s into your head, “Be so good they cannot ignore you!”   For this weeks Patreon ‘Xtra Show’ podcast with Niall, click HERE     A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions.   Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below.
