Faith, Hope, & GriefShare with Steve Grissom
It may be hard for you to feel optimistic about the future right now. If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before. Steve and Cheryl Grissom founded Church Initiative in 1993. In 1998, Church Initiative reached an important milestone by releasing the first edition of GriefShare, a video-based support group that comes alongside grieving individuals. Now in its third edition, GriefShare continues to grow and reach more individuals every year. Currently, over 20,000 churches are equipped with one or more Church Initiative ministry programs. Join us today for a hope filled discussion with Steve Grissom! You’ll hear his journey and the hope that GriefShare brings to so many each day. Steve and Marshall, both veterans of GriefShare, share the hope that they have experienced as attendees and for Steve and his wife Shelly, GriefShare Group leaders. To find out more or join a GriefShare group please visit their website: https://www.griefshare.org  Do you have a GriefShare experience to tell us about? We would love to read your story on a future episode of the show! Send your story to hopethrugrief@gmail.com and please share our show with anyone you know that is struggling with loss and grief. You can find us on the internet to continue the conversation! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hopethrugrief Twitter: https://twitter.com/HTGPodcastInstagram:  https://www.instagram.com/hopethrugriefWebsite: http://hopethrugrief.com.Subscribe & Share: https://hope-thru-grief.captivate.fm/listenJordan Smelski Foundation: http://www.jordansmelskifoundation.org Tune in for new episodes every Thursday morning wherever you listen to podcasts! Marshall Adler and Steve Smelski, co-hosts of Hope Thru Grief are not medical, or mental health professionals, therefore we cannot and will not give any medical, or mental health advice. If you, or anyone you know needs medical, or mental health treatment, please contact a medical, or mental health professional immediately. Thank youMarshall AdlerSteve Smelski

Time, Travel, and Triggers
The journey of grief, while different for everyone, is also common in some respects.  No one knows how grief will affect you and there will be very difficult days ahead.  Some days will be much worse than others and at different points something will come up that triggers a memory or experience that can take you right back to where you were early on. These triggers can come at you in many, many different ways. It could be a song, it could be a place, it could be a previous trip it could even be seeing someone in similar clothing. No matter the manner, the trigger can take you right back to a place you haven’t been to in weeks, or even years. We welcome your comments and questions! Send an email to hopethrugrief@gmail.com and please share our show with anyone you know that is struggling with loss and grief.

Herb Knoll and His Widower Support Group
Grief is a topic no one wants to study, or learn about, until you are in it. It’s a “if it hasn’t happened to me yet, I certainly don’t want to mention it” kind of thing. Herb Knoll lost his wife Michelle to cancer in 2008 after having been her care giver for 39 months. When Herb went to find a book about grief as a widower, he discovered there were none! So, Herb began researching and writing his book The Widower’s Journey: Helping Men Rebuild After Their Loss, available on Amazon. After completing the book Herb decided there still wasn’t enough support for Widowers, so he started the Widower’s Support Network.  Herb is also founder and host for the Widower’s Journey Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/widowers-journey/id1473762540). Please join us for an interesting discussion with Herb Knoll on today’s Hope Thru Grief as we touch on subjects like why are men so vulnerable, why the support material for widower’s so limited and what are the challenges in grief for men? If you’d like to purchase a copy of Herb’s book The Widower’s Journey: Helping Men Rebuild After Their Loss you may contact Herb directly at Herb@widowerssupportnetwork.com and if you mention the discount code Hope you’ll receive a 15% discount of the purchase price of his book! We welcome your comments and questions! Send an email to hopethrugrief@gmail.com and please share our show with anyone you know that is struggling with loss and grief.

The Complex Issues of a Loss Like No Other – Suicide Part I
Because suicide is such a unique loss, for both the loved one and the suicide survivors, we have decided to break this into several episodes over the next few months In this Part I episode we review some of the many statistics surrounding this type of loss.  Reviewing the numbers helps us set a baseline for understanding the scope and reach of this type of loss, as well as to understand the increasing need for medical intervention and education. In the past 20 years the numbers of suicides increased by 30%! This also means there is an ever-increasing number of suicide survivors that need help in their journeys of grief.  Dissecting topics like “no common component”, the iceberg analogy and reviewing the large number of “famous celebrities committing suicide”.   Marshall and Steve discuss these topics, as well as a few more in this episode of Hope Thru Grief. We welcome your comments and questions! Send an email to hopethrugrief@gmail.com and please share our show with anyone you know that is struggling with loss and grief. If you, or anyone you know needs medical or mental health treatment, please contact a medical or mental health professional immediately. The Suicide Prevention Lifeline number is 1-800-273-8255 Thank youMarshall AdlerSteve Smelski

The #COVID Conundrum
Dealing with grief while leaning into a support network of family and friends to get us through is hard enough. Enter the global pandemic of 2020, #COVID19.  In an instant everything has become new and more difficult. Most of the available support is now done through technology and isolation. Socially distancing ourselves to stay safe is something our minds understand. Our hearts, not so much.  Today Marshall and Steve breakdown the effects that a global pandemic has on those that have or will find themselves in grief during and because of #COVID19.  How has the pandemic affected you and/or your family and loved ones? Do you have questions or maybe a tip to help make it through? We welcome your comments and questions. Send an email to hopethrugrief@gmail.com and we might read your response on the next episode! Please share our show with anyone you know that is struggling with loss and grief. If you, or anyone you know needs medical or mental health treatment, please contact a medical or mental health professional immediately. Thank youMarshall AdlerSteve Smelski

Kubler-Ross Model Five Stages of Grief
Everyone tries to break grief down into a list of neat little stages. However, grief doesn’t always work, or feel that way. Everyone may experience the emotions of grief differently and in a much different order. Today we will examine and discuss in detail Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’ model of the Five Stages of Grief*. Dr. Kubler-Ross developed this model in 1969. The model includes the stages of:(2:05) Overiew Kubler-Ross model(4:14) Denial* (8:31) Anger* (13:01) [Guilt](16:53) Bargaining* (19:53) Depression*(25:51) Acceptance*(31:40) [Control](37:32) [Additional Clinical Lists for Another Time]While Dr. Kubler-Ross identified 5 particular stages or parts, it is important to realize there are many subsets and emotions for each of these. It is also important to realize grief “is not linear” so you may not experience these in this order, or only once. Because Dr. Kubler-Ross developed this model from observing patients experiencing grief, rather than from a personal experience, we don’t necessarily experience grief in this order. There are many links to different pages discussing this model, here are two of them: https://grief.com/the-five-stages-of-grief/ and https://psychcentral.com/lib/the-5-stages-of-loss-and-grief/   Marshall and Steve discuss these topics, as well as a couple more in this episode of Hope Thru Grief. We welcome your comments and questions! Send an email to hopethrugrief@gmail.com and please share our show with anyone you know that is struggling with loss and grief. You can find us on the internet to continue the conversation!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hopethrugriefTwitter: https://twitter.com/HTGPodcastInstagram:  https://www.instagram.com/hopethrugriefWebsite: http://hopethrugrief.com.Subscribe & Share: https://hope-thru-grief.captivate.fm/listenJordan Smelski Foundation: http://www.jordansmelskifoundation.orgTune in for new episodes every Thursday morning wherever you listen to podcasts!Marshall Adler and Steve Smelski, co-hosts of Hope Thru Grief are not medical, or mental health professionals, therefore we cannot and will not give any medical, or mental health advice. If you, or anyone you know needs medical or mental health treatment, please contact a medical or mental health professional immediately.Thank youMarshall AdlerSteve Smelski
