S3 Special with Katy Emck, Founding Director, Fine Cell Work
Also I think that many people in prison, 70% of them have mental health problems, have some disorders of one sort or another. If they didn't before they went to prison, they very likely might get some mental health issue in prison. The work actually alleviates that mental distress. I think having something to do and having a sense of purpose. You're talking about getting something finished. Imagine if you have suicidal thoughts and suicide rates in prison are quite high, much, much higher than the national average and the norm. You want to finish that before you want to kill yourself. There's something, there's a purpose, right?  I became a volunteer business mentor for Fine Cell Work's Open the Gate Programme a couple of years ago and so wanted to share their story with you and what they and their volunteers do to support offenders and ex-offenders. Since 1997, this charity has worked with over 7,500 prisoners training them to do high quality skills and creative stitching in their cells enabling them to earn money, skills, and self-belief. Our guide today is a woman who joined their founder in the very early days and transformed a gem of an idea into the award winner it is today. She was also awarded the OBE in 2016 for her service to the rehabilitation of offenders and collaborations include working with Ai Weiwei, Kit Kemp who's founder of the Firmdale Hotel group, Cath Kidston, Bob and Roberta Smith, and bespoke commissions includes Selfridges, Stella McCartney, Gavin Turk, the V&A, and the author. Tracy Chevalier. Hear how the charity began, the major driver for the late Lady Anne Tree (a prisoner visitor and prison rights activist) to fight for prisoners to be paid, why Katy became involved, how the charity works, where they have managed to fill the gap over the pandemic, the importance of wellbeing for offenders (75% of offenders have mental health problems), their Open the Gate Programme and much more. My book recommendation: From Bean to Bar: A Chocolate Lovers Guide to Britain ~ Andrew Baker Chocolate: Booja Booja Salted Caramel Truffles Quote: Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get ~ Forest Gump from the movie Forest Gump Fine Cell Work Insta: @finecellwork This is our last episode in this Series. S3 E15 Carla Biesinger, Founder Carla Biesinger
I think in the beginning, the first pain was, I don't know what the hell I'm doing, and then it was a lot of accumulating knowledge and just learning and trying out different things until I found my way. Then the next pain was, I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, but I'm not really getting enough clients. That then turned into testing out different offers, creating funnels learning about just how to attract clients instead of just growing my audience.  Carla Biesinger has created a business which quite literally moves countries as, and when she does, which until the pandemic included Mexico, New York City, Barcelona, Berlin, and finally Lisbon. She's an early adopter of life as a digital nomad and in her words, a freedom-driven entrepreneur. From a love of food, our guests ended up becoming an Instagram expert and online course creator with her immensely popular course, Instagram Secrets to Success, and has choked up a following of over 45,000. An audience of over 100,000 subscribers and most recently added the role of business mentor to her brand. We chat about the how's and why's she went from the world of restaurants to the world of instagram, the growing pains and challenges of converting followers into clients, why she has potentially now found her home for a while, where the pandemic affected her business, where her strengths were, her thoughts on social media and in particular instagram, how she copes with stress, where she has had to have hope and patience and much more. My recommendation: Three Little Birds ~ Bob Marley Carla's book recommendation: Super Attractor ~ Gabby Bernstein Chocolate: Lindt Dark Chocolate Orange Quote: Difficulties are just things to overcome, after all ~ Ernest Shackleton Carla Biesinger Insta: @carlabiesinger SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER WITH A CHANCE TO WIN OUR H&P CHOCOLATE BAR. S3 E14 Chris Stylianou, Founder The Adventure is Real
'If you failed at something, it's because you tried something new. It doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with that if it doesn't go the way you want, but you do need to get up and try again until you make a success.' Chris Stylianou and his team takes his clients on adventures - and guess what you don’t need to move very far to get adventuring. He’s the founder of an award-winning escape game business, originally designed to be a physical experience when it launched in 2019 - but as you’ll discover the pandemic flipped that business model on its head and took it online.  Featured in Huffington Post, London Live, the Financial Times, described by Time Out as ‘one of the best online experiences’ and with a predicted turnover of £3/4 million this year he’s a guy travelling on the upward curve with his business. Chris and I chat about the trigger which propelled him taking The Adventure is Real from a side hustle to be his full time ambition, how life was just on track before the curveball of the pandemic as well as losing his dad, why Chris and his team recreated the offering to an online one within 2 weeks of the first lockdown and how it worked, fundraising, the influence of his dad (who sadly died during the pandemic), how he copes with stress and much more. My book recommendation: Hector and the Search for Happiness ~ Francois Lelord Chris's book recommendation: The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses by Jesse Schell & The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie Chocolate: Dairy Milk Quote: It's a mistake to think that happiness is the goal ~ Francois Lelord Agent Venture SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER WITH A CHANCE TO WIN OUR H&P CHOCOLATE BAR. S3 E13 Stewart Roberts, Founder Haircuts4Homeless
My phone lit up with everyone saying, "Are you okay, are you okay," at five o'clock to then eight o'clock at night, "My God, I've just seen you on The X Factor adverts." I had to turn it off. I couldn't cope with it for about 24 hours. Stewart Roberts has had quite a journey in his life. A journey which has led him to become a founder of a community-based charity where hairdressers donate their support to the homeless. They have 600 volunteers, near to 68 projects on the go and have delivered around 40k pockets of joy in the form of haircuts for homeless souls since they started back in 2014. Their sponsors include the National Lottery Community Fund, affiliates include the British Beauty Council and L’Oreal and this year the charity won the Marie Claire UK Hair Awards 2021 Special Jury Prize which is a special recognition for helping others. Their Global ambassador is none other than the Game of Thrones star Lena Headey. We chat about what triggered Stewart to create his charity, losing his hairdressing business and the grief with it, the challenges of the pandemic on the charity and also the homeless, the serendipity of life as his business went into insolvency and what happened the same day to open a huge door, how he has attracted his sponsors, affiliates and ambassadors, why he contemplated 10 ways of killing himself at a dark stage in his life, why the Gideon bible is by his bedside and much more. P.S. The odd whistle and phone ringing is Stewarts parrot! S3 E12 Tskenya Frazer, Founder TSKENYA Shoes
The only course I went on was the YouTube course, the YouTube school of life. Tskenya Frazer's business is one which is helping breakdown the barriers for LGBTQ+ fashion. It’s a gender free multi award-winning vegan footwear brand specialising in larger sized feet and has been featured in Vogue, The Economist, BBC Women's Hour, The Guardian and Drapers to name but a few. You’ll discover our guest to be a remarkable woman aged only 27 and with her purpose oozing out of every pore. She is also midst writing a book about the landscape of Black British business. In this episode we chat about how and why TSKENYA shoes was created, market research in Starbucks, the personal challenges Tskenya has faced, juggling a side hustle with many other roles including writing her book, working for MTC, a VC for Ada Capital and carer for her mum. I ask what it will take for her to make the leap to go full time with her much talked about and respected brand, where the shortfalls are for the younger generations to run their own businesses, how the Prince's Trust literally saved her life and loads more. By the end of the episode I could see Tskenya becoming a potent leader on the level with Michelle Obama and Arianna Huffington. She is one incredible woman as you will discover. S3 E11 Dan Szor, Founder The Cotswolds Distillery
Well, it's been quite an interesting year. When it first happened, we were like every other business in this country, we had no idea. It felt, I described it a lot as going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, that's the Americans analogy. It felt at that point as it were that we had been shot off the lip of the waterfall, and we were in mid-air and had no idea how hard we were going to hit the water, and whether we're going to break into a million pieces. ~ Dan Szor, Founder The Cotswolds Distillery So in this episode we’re going on a whisky and gin adventure with the founder of the multi award-winning distillery, The Cotswolds Distillery. To add into the mix, he’s a New Yorker making Scottish whisky in the Cotswolds. An intriguing combo don’t you think? He and his team clearly know what they’re up to as their whisky and gin have notched up Golds, Double Golds (I had no idea Double Golds existed until now), 3* star Taste Awards and stocked in near to 40 countries (UK stores include: Fortnum & Mason, Waitrose, Majestic and a host of fab independents). His distillery and visitor centre, opened by Prue Leith, have received the ‘Hidden Gem’ award from Visit England, and hold the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence. We talk about how and why Dan made the shift from running a hedge fund to risking it all and going into whisky including his 'barley epiphany' and why buying a barrel of Bruichladdich whisky on a holiday visit helped cement his new chapter. You will discover how Dan and his team balance the concept of laying down stock (whisky takes 3 years before it can be called whisky which means a massive investment in stock), how gin became their 'love child' which was immediately picked up by Fortnum & Mason, Majestic and Harvey Nicols, the life their stills Lorelei & Dolly, the influence of his parents - his dad who survived life in a concentration camp -, the difference of working in the financial industry to running his own business, how they have survived the pandemic to date, how they support sustainability and climate change, what he does to keep fit and loads more. My recommendation:  My Octopus Teacher ~ Netflix Dan's book recommendation: Notes from a Small Island ~ Bill Bryson Dan's book about his journey: Spirit Guide - In search of an authentic life (Available on their website and amazon). It's a brilliant read - trust me. S3 E9 Farah Naz, Founder & CEO EX1 Cosmetics
'We curated a range of golden yellow pigments as opposed to the traditional pigments that all brands are using, actually. We disrupted at the pigment level and we got pickup from celebrities, I think, because they could see that the offering was just distinctive, that when they'd put it on, it didn't look like anything else they'd used before.' Farah Naz is a trained makeup artist, a biochemist, and founder and CEO of the multi-award-winning makeup brand, which was the first to develop a foundation for olive skin tones. Named on NBC's today's show as one of the top five most disruptive beauty brands in the world, her fans include Adele, Michelle Obama, Margot Robbie, Rami Malek, and Holly Willoughby, the host of ITV's This Morning show says, 'Celebrities can't live without it.' Swept up by the world's largest beauty and health retailer AS Watson, they're now rolling out to 250 locations in the UK, as well as launching in Dubai. In this episode Farah and I chat about her decision to park her business to have children despite a phenomenal pick up when it launched, whether it's luck or hard work which has helped her business grow, how her training as a biochemist has helped her have an edge on her competitors, the effects of the pandemic, stress and how she handles it, her way to keep fit, what she perceives to be her higher purpose and loads more. S3 E8 Lizzie Deshayes, Co-Founder Fromental
'I think failure is more interesting than success, because going back to the grit, failure does make you reflect on what you've done well or haven't achieved well and how to do it better. S3 E7 Alistair Gosling, Founder & CEO Extreme International
'I have a tough time listening. I have to experience and then learn from experience. Yes, I can read it in a book, but I just have to experience it.... I'm a true believer in this mix of intellect and intuition. Here, in the West, we very much believe in intellect is what you're taught at school is led by intellect. If you go to India, it's the other way round. Intuition is as important, if not at many times, it's more important than intellect.' Alistair Gosling has been in the world of adventure and extreme sport for over 25 years. Setting up the first Extreme Sports TV Channel which partnered with the giants UPC and Liberty Media in the 1990 Al went on to acquire the Extreme Brand and sell the 50% stake in the Extreme Sports Channel to Liberty Media.   He has gone on to build up his brand Extreme to now include a marketing and media agency, destinations, events, gaming, a mobile network, clothing (the most recent with Clarkes shoes) and consumer electronics. Partnerships include governments, tourist boards, councils, NatWest, Warner Bros and Black and Decker to name but a few. He’s on the advisory board of Quiddiya, the 334k square km sports, entertainment and cultural project in Saudi Arabia and he has become a recent signatory to the United Nations Sports for Climate Action Framework. And all this started out in a corner of his parents’ garage when he was in his 20’s. S2 E2 David Kirby, Co-Founder & CEO, Avida Global
'I suppose I learned a lot from him. Just taking those analogies of running a really good business. This business is just like an orchestra everybody plays their part everybody is brilliant on their instrument in their own rights. You've got to get it singing as one voice and playing together as a team.' Wise words don't you think? David Kirby is the co-founder and CEO of the medicinal cannabis company, Avida Global. Avida Global is the first British producer of cannabis oil and isolates whose dedicated growing facility is in the North East of Colombia, near the Venezuelan border.  Having raised in excess of £6m over the last couple of years, and with an impressive board of Directors including Lord Mancroft, Former Chairman of the Drug & Alcohol Foundation, Nick Davis, Founder of Memery Crystal, and Dr Inbar Maymon-Pomeranchick, one of the leading experts on medicinal cannabis, their company is on a mission to bring top quality CBD oil to businesses worldwide. Join David and I where we chat about his early days as a classical pianist, his business journey up to founding Avida Global with Carl, the challenges they have faced, the regulations involved, what security they require (trust me it's quite a major part of their business) how they address climate change and the support Colombia offers them. David shares an insight into his mindset, what he does to switch off, his favourite author, music, takes on success and failure and much more. Oh and why two choices for the 'chocolate break' - he wouldn't opt for just one! S2 E13 Anna Mason, Founder, Anna Mason London
Anna Mason's distinct, feminine designs (to quote The Times) ‘slyly modest, slyly sexy’ are known to attract the ‘where did you get that from‘ question. Yes seriously. Her talent was spotted by Karl Lagerfeld when she was at the RCA and suffice to say she ended up working for him in Paris and with her style influenced one of his collections. She went on to work for Max Mara, Valentino in Italy before returning back to London and working for Amanda Wakeley. Anna Mason London's ready-to-wear collections can be found at Net-A-Porter and Moda Operandi. With rave reviews from the fashion press, she has been hailed as ‘the best kept secret in London’ by The Vendeur and ‘the quietly chic fashion label made for life’ by The Telegraph.  Join Anna and I chatting about her ambition to be a fashion designer, how it nearly didn't happen, what makes her tick, how they are adapting to make sure they address sustainability, her thoughts on success and failure and so much more. Anna is candid. She shares valuable insights. My website recommendation: The How To Academy Chocolate: Ritter Sport Marzipan Quote: 'Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. 'It's really interesting when you learn the fundamentals of something at such a young age and with such a desire for discovery and understanding that you have when you're an adolescent, it gives you a great insight. He is the multi-award winning English winemaker considered by wine experts to be the most exciting talent in the English winemaking scene. His awards include UK Boutique Producer 2020, UK Winery of the Year 2018 & 2020, International Wine Challenge Silver and Gold as well as awards from Decanter and a rating of 96. S2 E11 Stine Dulong, Founder, Skandihus
'I think very importantly when you're shedding skin, it hurts. It really, really hurts and it's uncomfortable. I think that one of the main things that I am learning, let's say is that to be okay with this uncomfortableness, because I'm learning that that is actually where real change comes from and that without going through these processes of the in-between uncomfortable places, you actually will never grow or move to the next stage properly because you will always be stuck in that old way of thinking or feeling and doing things.' I discovered the lovely Stine Dulong, Founder of Skandihus, from an article in The Times. Her story resonated with me and we then got chatting via instagram and here she is as our guest! If you are feeling locked into a career, or at a crossroads then this episode is a must-too listen. Stine went from a criminal lawyer to ceramicist and founder of the highly acclaimed Skandihus. Her ceramics have attracted the likes of Nigella Lawson, Ottolenghi, Nobu, the Connaught hotel, Michelin starred chefs. The impressive list just goes on. Her classes have been called 'the best pottery classes in London and beyond' by Conde Nast Traveller and her students call them a 'clay sanctuary'. With two studios in East London, she's assisted by her team of up to 20 along with her loyal canine companion, Mr. Alfie Perkins. Join our chat to hear her journey, her amazing insights into life and what she has learned and so much more in this episode. S2 E10 Tim Mead, Chairman & Founder's Son, Yeo Valley Organic
'I was 25 when my father, unfortunately, died in an accident on the farm. That basically puts a massive, great rocket up you on the basis that the responsibility of the custodianship of handing it on to another generation, or to looking after the generation that was there, like my sisters and my mother. Suddenly that responsibility suddenly became 100% truly mine.' Tim Mead's family are true pioneers in the organic farming world starting back in the 1960's with only one Somerset farm and making yoghurt with left over milk from the clotted cream which they sold locally. Today Yeo Valley is one of the UK's top 100 brands and still remains a privately owned company. Tim and his team have grown his father's legacy into a company which has moved with the times yet remained so solid and true to its roots.
