How are your state universities structured? Iowa is in a Regent system (but 3 different independent universities) GVSU is totally independent, but funded by the state of MI UALR is being tasked with crossover login at all of their state schools All schools are moving to a single ERP and LMS. Dave is speaking at a conference and they provided some questions. What are your top 3 favorite HIGHER ED websites? Cornell University Indiana Nebraska Michigan Stanford UT Austin Talking about university logos. Athletic mark vs. the academic mark. Loki the dog

HEH 41: The Search Search
The HEH dudes talk about what they got for the holidays, any new conference attendances and then dig in on a new site search tool for GVSU, who needs to move away from the Google Appliance. Google Home tricks and games Akinator What did we get for Christmas? Dan got a Nest Thermostat and a Chromecast Daniel got socks and Wine and Beer Scott got Bluetooth earbuds Ken got an Amazon Fire Stick (doesn’t offer anything more than his current Apple TV) Conferences this year? Scott is doing a leadership workshop on campus (7 months) so no off campus conference this year Daniel wants a developer conference for teams working together. Dave is going to SXSWEdu Another good one is Digital Summit (in various cities) Ken is looking at ELUNA (library specific conference) Dan is not sure yet but looking for a good developer conference (liked Smashing Conference a couple years ago) Google Custom search updates for GVSU Apache Solr Elastic Search Others: https://www.funnelback.com/product/search https://swiftype.com/ https://cse.google.com/cse/ https://lucidworks.com/products/fusion-server/ https://www.elastic.co/ Conveo LucidWorks Searchblox Search Technologies Mind Breeze Cludo (edited) Bing Custom Search Amazon Cloud Search Scott is glowing.

HEH 40: If you sell alcohol… please sponsor us!
Dan got a new phone (cheap!), Dave got rid of Facebook, Daniel updated WordPress, Scott likes Reply All Podcast, Ken is scared of browser fingerprinting… and MORE! Dave deleted his FB account. There’s a place where FB shows you what it knows about you. Your Information > Your Categories Daniel just barely missed out on ordering his iPhone X Dan bought a $100 (Moto E4) Android device and scratched the phone and wasn’t sure if he should buy a new phone or a new screen for $50. (he drank too much cider) UALR updated WordPress a few months ago and started to evaluate plugins and scripts. A file permissions script didn’t finish and left them in an incorrect state. In that state, WP could not see the plugins folder and deactivated themselves. Many parts of the site went down. GVSU pushed an update that broke the headers on the CMS. GVSU accidentally put some policies on a prod server vs. dev and it was all OK. UALR has change meetings and change boards to monitor large system/enterprise changes. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITIL) Reply All podcast talks about how FB connects the dots of soooo many points of data. People think that FB is listening to you but it’s more their use of data. HEH 10: Controlled Release
We talk about languages, which are the most popular, and which ones we like the best (and why). Iowa launches a new admissions website. How we use content types, and ways we could use them better. Why does Dan love (hate?) Cold Fusion? Why not just PHP? http://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/ (CF is not in the top 50) If we had to rewrite tomorrow, we’d go with something common since it’s easier to find developers – probably PHP. Scott launched a new admissions site admissions.uiowa.edu Generally positive response Just a design refresh (same structure, same links) We launched alongside alongside a transition to a centralized cloud hosting for Drupal (Acquia) on our campus which has had it’s own issues. That allowed admisisons to share the site with staff and partners early and get input for a week prior to launch. Content types and how we use them and tools used in our CMS UALR uses WordPress and has only 2 content types (posts/pages). Iowa Admissions has a lot of content types in Drupal (which is built around custom content types) Grand Valley only has pages as a content type in their custom CMS with a few extra modules for dates features etc. What do you do with pages that haven’t been visited in a year or two years? GVSU will approach high traffic pages, but not removed unused content. UI Library has an “out to pasture” are but keeps everything because they are a… library (servers: dim, dark, deep) Internet Archive is a good place for keeping that older content GVSU is rolling out a new version of their CMS and along with that providing an opportunity to sunset older pages. Daniel almost got shot! (might have been a door slam) Possible new content types for UALR that bubble to the top for similar pages. Policies Areas of study Staff/Faculty Bios What’s better, write your own CMS or use enterprise or off the shelf? You’re going to have growing pains and add customizations no matter what. Some off the shelf systems have communities Build your own allows you total freedom to do what you need Urban Dictionary Word of the Day: ybd, your baby daddy

HEH 2: Is your site accessible?
This episode takes a deep dive into accessibility and how we try to keep our sites accessible. Accessibility WCAG 2.0 AA is the rule for all our schools SiteImprove (GVSU, UALR) Compliance Sherif (Iowa) We need a tool that checks on the fly for content editors – or an API into existing checkers. Training should be provided to content editors with a mention of accessibility. How do you re-priorities the resources for training? Recent lawsuits make it hard to react. Captioning Video – it’s easy for short videos and really tough (expensive) to do longer lectures etc. Youtube captioning tool SubtitleEdit
