Ep 102 Kennedy Watkins - Let's Code Together Girl Scout Gold Award Project
Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Kennedy took a Girl Scout Troop experience and created a STEM program, with a special focus on minorities in STEM. More from Kennedy: Hello, my name is Kennedy Watkins. I am the founder of Gilded Teas, an organic loose-leaf tea company. My company's mission is to encourage minorities to join the STEM and agriculture fields. During high school, I was a part of One Laptop Per Child my sophomore year and along with other girls, created lesson plans to teach elementary students how to code in Barbados as my May program. I wanted to continue to introduce more people to the STEM field. In my Junior year, I began working on my Gold Award, the highest award recognized by a Girl Scout. The project was influenced by my time in Barbados. I created my own lesson plans and I'm sharing them with teachers. Currently, I am a Computer Science major, and this past year I didn't see many females of color in my classes. I wanted to grow an audience for my message so that I could reach more people and grow more awareness. I want to use my company's platform to teach a new audience about this. Gilded Teas targets health-conscious tea drinkers who before learning of my company were unaware of the stem field from a minority perspective. https://gildedteas.com/ https://www.instagram.com/gildedteasllc/ Share this show with your friends on Twitter. Ep 101 Giovanna Quevedo - A Kid’s Guide to Radiation Therapy Girl Scout Gold Award Project
Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Giovanna wrote a bilingual book for children experiencing radiation treatment explaining what the process is like. More about Giovanna : Giovanna Quevedo was inspired to write, “A Kid’s Guide to Radiation Therapy,” after her mother was diagnosed with cancer and prescribed radiation therapy as treatment. Her mother’s experience made her wonder how pediatric patients cope with their cancer treatment. While researching educational materials about cancer, she failed to find age-appropriate resources for pediatric radiation patients and she wanted to change that. Over the course of two years, Giovanna researched, wrote, self-published, and donated her book. Today, her bilingual children’s book is available through partnerships with twelve leading hospitals and cancer organizations across the globe which reach an estimated 45,000 people annually. Giovanna is a University Honors student and President’s Scholar studying Nutritional Science and Chemistry with the goal of working in healthcare. After earning her Gold Award, she represented Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles as their inaugural Gold Award Scholarship recipient and in the 2022 Tournament of Roses Troop. She loves Girl Scout camp and works as a lifeguard and boating instructor for a camp in her council. Giovanna hopes her project will continue to reach children and families in need as they embark on their journey to healing. https://akidsguide.wixsite.com/radiation Share this show with your friends on Twitter. Ep 93 Shannon Layng - A Century of Trees Girl Scout Gold Award Project
Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Shannon planted 100 trees in her community to replace those lost to Emerald Ash Bore and Dutch Elm disease. The 100 was significant as she did it the year Girl Scouts celebrated 100 years. Shannon talks about her project, how Girl Scouts continues to impact her a decade later, and using her Girl Scout experiences and Gold Award project in applying to colleges, with a specific example for her medical school application. She shares her adventure volunteering at Pax in London with WAGGGS. More from Shannon: I am 27 years old, born and raised in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, and am a first year medical student at the University of Illinois College of Medicine- Rockford. I am a lifelong girl scout, having started in Daisies through to completing my gold award during junior year of high school. I am hugely inspired by my mother, Karen Layng, who was my troop leader and is currently on the GS USA council. She encouraged me to volunteer internationally for WAGGS during my pre-medical gap year and more recently to join the GS of Chicago and Northwest Indiana Council’s Associate Board in 2021. The values instilled in me by girl scouting are values I hold dear today and are at the core of why I want to be a doctor. I hope to continue emulating them as an adult through my practice and am excited to be starting medical school this summer. My medical specialty interested are reconstructive surgery and oncology. In my spare time I enjoy baking, yoga, and musical theatre. Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Savannah collected books and made a reading nook for AVDA domestic abuse victims center. The children are able to curl up in a bean bag with a book and a blanket while their parent does paperwork. More from Savannah: My name is Savannah Garrett, and I was a Girl Scout from the time I was 5 until I graduated high school at 18. I am currently 19 and a Sophomore at the University of Central Florida studying Political Science and National Intelligence and Security. I am so thankful for growing up as a Girl Scout because of the amazing friends and memories that I was able to make during my childhood. I am especially thankful for my Troop Leader Kristina Phelps for pushing me to get my Gold Award, even amid my senior year, applying to colleges, and dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. If it were not for her dedication to Troop 20962, I would not be here today. After college, I plan on moving to Washington D.C. to continue working for or alongside the government in some capacity. I am taking the Girl Scout Law with me to make the world a better place and to serve my country. https://openyourheartopen.wixsite.com/abook https://www.avdaonline.org/ Share this show with your friends on Twitter.
