The Homeopathic Uses of Titanium – Info You Need to Know.
Materia Medica Tips – 16 (Podcast also available) As homeopaths, whenever we think of remedies of metal origin, we consider something which is very deep and long acting. This fact is in accordance to the simile principle because the metals are basically present deep inside in our tissues. But why to categorize them according to the length of action. The answer is simple yet tricky. Most of the metal remedies comes into full term use when we are struck with a case. While our prescription is able to relieve the symptoms but not able to act for longer term and give a deep impression. Here comes the role of remedies of metal origin, but the thumb rule remains the same – symptom similarity, strong intuition or robust past experience. Today’s quick tip is related to one such metallic origin remedy – TITANIUM METALLICUM. Titanium is extensively used in surgeries (first introduced in the 1950s) and dentistry. It has gained this place due to its biocompatibility and resistance to corrosion from human body cellular and extra cellular environment. It is able to make a protective oxide film in the presence of oxygen. Therefore, it has varied used as prosthetic, internal fixation, inner body devices, and instrumentation etc. It is quoted that, “There is no known biological role for titanium. There is a detectable amount of titanium in the human body and it has been estimated that we take in about 0.8 mg/day, but most passes through us without being adsorbed. It is not a poison metal and the human body can tolerate titanium in large dose (Source). Here comes the beauty of homeopathy. Once considered to be the safest and most inert substances when subjected to potentization appears to have inherent properties of affecting the human body and when used therapeutically, have the power to bring a restoration to health. The Boericke’s materia medica starts its description as “Is found in the bones and muscles. Has been used in lupus and tuberculosis processes externally, also in skin disease, nasal catarrh, etc.” Now we can very well relate the location affinity of this metal. Since it is present is bones and skin within physiological levels, its triturated and ultrahigh diluted forms are able to affect the skin and muscles. Further, some important clinical symptoms and conditions are mentioned as, Vision: Imperfect vision, the peculiarity being that half an object only could be seen at once. Vertigo: Giddiness with vertical hemiopia. Sexual: Sexual weakness, with too early ejaculation of semen in coitus (compares with Selenium). Kidneys: Bright’s disease. Skin: Eczema, lupus, Respiratory: Rhinitis. Usually metallic origin remedies are only used in rhinitis like cases when every else has failed. But it is also a challenge of us to prescribe such remedies when we don’t have characteristics and defined modalities. But nonetheless, this remedy (and similar remedies) do play important role when we are presented with partial symptoms. Therefore, for readers ease the following scenarios must be taken into consideration: One sided diseases. Partial symptoms. When patient is consulted remotely. Lack of time to take the case BUT diagnosis and CLINICAL condition is confirmed. When patient is not cooperative. When well selected remedies fail to bring the desired outcomes. Coleus Aromaticus Homeopathy Uses
Materia Medica Tips – 38 (To listen the tip as Podcast scroll at the end) Coleus aromaticus Today’s Materia Medica tip is for a remedy known as coleus aromaticus benth (botanical name). It is also known as Pashanbhedi, Coleus amboinicus Lour, Coleus crasifolious Benth, Coleus sunanda Blance, Patharchur, and Indian borage commonly. This remedy belongs to the family of labiatae and leaves are used to prepare its mother tincture. For its preparation according to Pharmacopoeia (HPI) the mother tincture has a drug strength of 1\10 and is prepared in strong alcohol. The chemical composition consists of Sodium, Alkaloid, Essential oil containing carvacrol present in the herb in small quantities. History and authority: Ghose; Drugs of Hindoosthan, VIII ed. The clinical usage of this remedy is primarily for urinary complaints. We must be able to differentiate (and use this remedy as an adjuvant) with other important broad acting remedies such as Cantharis, Sarsaparilla, Tribulus, Apis etc. The differentiation is easy when there are plenty of comparable symptoms. In cases where there is a picture of one sided disease, few individualized symptoms, presence of specific disease symptoms probability of using this remedy is more. This remedy can be used for alleviating symptoms and giving quick, transient relief for the following complaints: Urinary complaints: Strangury or painful micturition, frequent tendency to urination with strain at stool – this symptom is more intense when there is presence of the straining stools. Sometimes concentrated, viscous urinal discharge with blood (Blumia Odo): Hot and trickling urinal discharge. Uremia of choleric patient. Gonorrhoea – One of the specific remedy for gonorrhoeal infections when there is no other alternative or when the broad acting remedies seems to fail to act. At this point in time considering Coleus arotmaticus as a palliative medicine is a good choice. This drug may be administered in the treatment of strangury and burning sensation of the urethra or ureter due to uric calculus in urine. Now at this point it must be compared with important remedies like Berberis vulgaris, Hydrangea etc. If the intensity of strangury is out of proportion coleus is the preferred choice over other remedies. This is also useful in excessive discharge of urine in diabetes and strangury of women who have just delivered baby. Colic pain with urinary complaints is a common symptoms and may be considered if there is no other symptom. Few materia medica suggest its usage in respiratory troubles such as Asthma, chronic catarrh and in Epilepsy, but the exact symptomatology of such conditions are yet to be studied in detail. In homeopathy this remedy is used in low potencies such as mother tincture, 2x and above. References: Banerjea S. The Eye Symptoms of Physostigma and Ruta
Materia Medica Tip – 36 Today’s materia medica tip revolves around the eye symptoms of two important remedies, namely, Physostigma and Ruta. Whereas many of us use Physostigma and Ruta for various eye complaints (including some non-verifed claims of refractory errors corrections), we might not be exploring the in-depth use of these remedies. The classical symptoms of Physostima are described in its use in Night-blindness. Now the concept says that night blindness is due to Vitamin A deficiency. Is Physostigma going to cure Vitamin A deficiency? No. But it is surely going to alleviate the symptoms of night blindness and help recover from this condition along with necessary vitamin correction. There is photophobia, contraction of pupils (compare Belladonna); twitching of ocular muscles which at time is the main symptom for the use of Physostigma. Both Physostigma and Ruta are used for poor accommodation symptom of the eye. The Physostigma has paresis of accommodation with astigmatism especially after post diptheria whereas Ruta has disturbances of accommodation especially after overuse of eye muscles (too much reading, sewing, screen usage etc). In Physostigma, there is a spasm of the ciliary muscles, with irritability after using eyes which is comparable to Ruta. Ruta too has pain and heaviness in eyes after prolonged use of muscles. The differntiating point can be the intensity. Ruta has intense symptoms such as strain followed by headache, red eyes; from sewing or reading fine print (Nat mur; Arg nit), weary pain while reading, pressure deep in orbits, tarsal cartilage feels bruised (Asthenopia), etc. Physostigma and Ruta both are used in clinical practice for Increasing myopia, but I have never seen any patient being cured of “Myopia” or “Hypermetropia”. Certainly, these remedies are used but only to control the increasing refractory error. This usually happens when there is associated with ciliary muscle weakness. If the symptom is appended with a headache the preferred remedy is Ruta, otherwise, it may be Physostigma. If there is a pressure of over eyebrows (compare Gelsemium) it points towards Ruta whereas if there is an inability to fully close the eyelids (Lagopthalmus) it points towards Physostigma. Physostigma is also a very applicable remedy for floaters (Muscæ volitantes) which are usually associated with flashes of light, and astigmatism. In many cases, the floater issue can be tackled very easily by using this remedy in moderate doses. Both remedies are of plant origin, therefore, majority of the time they are prescribed in repeated doses, but one must be aware regarding non-juidicial use of these.
