PIRATE DAY STRIKES HARDLY QUALIFIED!
67 minutes | Sep 12, 2013
This week on Hardly Qualified, we find ourselves at a bit of a loss because our scheduled guests were unable to appear, and we found ourselves scrambling to make shit up. So, we talk about movies and Halloween in the snow and potato chips. We talk about the cola wars, and how it effects nude photography. Then Bill Cosby joins us to talk about how we need to get rid of everyone. And then, we talk about the most important thing: Syria.

033: Human Pest Control
Today we talk about the end of civilization… mostly. We start off innocently enough, with the world view of cats, but devolve into the rise and fall of nation states, how slavery is an unsustainable form of labour, and how failure breeds strength and success breeds weakness. Keeping in line with the Fall of Civilization theme we talk Miley Cyrus, twerking, and Batfleck. Then on to talk about mankind’s territorial nature from things as big as neighbouring states to as small as ants. With an interruption from Dawkins and The Hitch, and a song by the MarlBros, this week’s episode is reasonably coherent, and we hope it’s interesting and fun.

032: WHATEVER! w/ Maia & The Working Man
Cover Art - Man with NO TRESPASSING sign for ep. #032 We get together with Maia Jern and The Working Man and talked about - whatever. Ducky is moving and he stresses about packing, unpacking, and going through all the things one collects over the years while deciding which to keep and what to toss, leading us into a discussion about the nostalgia of old technology. We talk about identity theft, the security of information, how social media is filtering our awareness and manufacturing world-views. We talk about privilege, and autism, and the tyranny of pet cats.We don’t have a plan, but we hope that doesn’t matter.

Here it is. You asked for it. More feminism. This time, Karen (you’ll remember her from the Zombie episode) joins us , and Maia returns to discuss this issue.

030: On Death
Suicide. Will’s cousin commited suicide this week, and in this special, emergency episode of Hardly Qualified, we discuss the nature of suicide, how it impacts the people around us, and why we feel the way we feel about it.We as a society tend to think of suicide as a selfish or cowardly act, but is it? Does the act of suicide require that one be insane, or suffering from the effects of a mental illness, or at least, a temporary state of obliviousness to reality, or can a person be rational in his/her choice to end his/her life? What about counselling someone who’s contemplating suicide? Can we? Should we? What goals do the counsellors have when dealing with someone who is suicidal, and what goals does the suicidal person have? Are they the same? Should they be?We have many thoughts about this topic, and in this episode, we talk about them. Partially as catharsis, but also because they need to be talked about, because in the end, death affects us all, and we shouldn’t be frightened to discuss it.

029: A Prison Named Freedom
This week’s giggle-fest takes a sharp turn once we start exploring the consequences of firearms in our society. From the Sammy Yatim shooting in Toronto and the George Zimmerman/Treyvon Martin affair, to Distributed Defence’s liberation of firearm acquisition via 3D Printing technology, the topic gets hotter than the barrels of a Gatling Gun. Law and Order is the theme of this show, featuring the role of the police in society, the out-sourcing of autonomy and personal responsibility to the government, and whether or not that surrender allows us to live a more free life, or a more oppressed one. Ducky and William tackle the margins of Libertarianism while Willeh tries to keep the peace as a war of words breaks out and the schedule goes to pot. It’s okay though, in the end, fuzzy feelings prevail and our reluctant heroes still have hearts for each other. Strap yourself down a little bit tighter into your gilded cage, there’s some thought provoking stuff in here. Let’s get started. 028: Addicted to Happiness
Are you happy? You should be, or you’re a sick, sick person. Feels that way sometimes, doesn’t it? We explore our cultural obsession with happiness, and reintroduce the concept of contentment and being okay. We talk about The Secret with Celine, the four domains of truth, and try to figure out where this obsession came from, at chipmunk speed! With an endorsement from George Hrab of the Geologic Podcast, it doesn’t get better than that eh? Grab a drink, enjoy, share, blah blah, you depress me. Thanks for listening. 027: The Kid Cult
Cover Art: Bubble Wrapped Good Luck Bear What’s it with parents these days? A kid can’t go 10 feet without being attached to a tether, being catalogued and evaluated. Our society has gone overboard; when we were kids we were told to go outside and not come back until ‘dark’, now parents won’t let their kids make choices and accept any consequences, and it’s ruining us all. Hey, we know parenting is hard, at least, we think we do, none of us are ACTUALLY parents, but we get it, it’s not easy. It also doesn’t serve society to treat children as “precious little snowflakes” while encouraging helicopter parenting. There’s must be a balance, children are resilient, and we need to stop with the fetishism because it’s not only harming them, it’s harming everyone else, like the guy banned from Lego-land because he was “only” an adult. It’s time for the bubble wrap to come off and this cult to die. China stands as a warning, and it’s not a pretty one. 025: Random Acts of "ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?"
Cover Photo: Burmese Cat “Jackson” Pet Peeves are expressions of self righteous indignation, if you ask me. But you didn’t, so Will asked Ducky and “The Working Man” what they thought about pet peeves, and what some of them were. What are some of your pet peeves, what really grates you for no good reason? We want to know. We hear from Penn Gillette about how to detect bullshit. Then we explore superstitions: what are some, where do they come from, and why do people hold them? What superstitions do you hold, do you know where they came from, and are they practical? BTW, black cats are brown, it’s a fact, look it up. We hook you up from the basement of The Lusso Hotel in Spokane, Washington as Tommy and Will Skype in during their vacation. Yes they love us that much (the basement had the most stable WIFI, and the employee bathrooms.) When all is said and done, show host Maia Jern takes us out with her new track, Lemonade - it’s apropos. So like us, rate us, and share us, like a huge plate of nachos. Tell us what you think of the show in the new Soundcloud app on the website; comment in real time and spread the love, in the eye. OMG ZOMBIES! No… wait. OMG UNDEAD! Er… no, OMG ARCHETYPAL STAND-INS! Zombies, everyone’s obsessed with them, except Will, who doesn’t get them, at all. So he asked his former English Professor what the deal was, turns out, she’s conducted research on zombie culture, and a show is born. Karen, Celine, and Tom (all new guest hosts) join to educate Will and what the big deal is, and as usual, there’s little agreement. 023: Public Displays of Discomfort
Ever sat in a bus only to watch the couple next to you do something disgusting - like holding hands? What about making out, or going the whole way? We have ideas on the limits around public displays of affection, and “The Working Man” has only one response to what we think: “NO.” Tommy joins us again with new guest host Roh as we talk about public displays of things that make us go eeeewww. From anti-abortion ads featuring aborted fetuses, to making out in pubic, we examine the limits of expression and even argue why hate speech, yes, hate speech, should be tolerated. Let’s sit and chat about what makes us uncomfortable. We’re bound to make you squirm one way or the other. 022: Spying on Potheads and Prostitutes
Your government likes to peek. It’s true, it does. Whether you’re Canadian, American, British, Australian, or what ever people from New Zealand are called (apparently they’re fruits), you’re being spied upon. Our collective governments have admitted (forcibly) to sifting through our phone calls, emails, Skype calls, web searches and Facebook posts looking for suspicious activity so they can dig more into our lives and find out if we’re mean, ill-intentioned or just misunderstood. We’re not ill-intentioned, we’re pro-pot. Well, we’re pro put-anything-you-want-into-your-body-you’re-an-adult-afterall, and if that includes weed, go for it. We argue for the legalization and decriminalization of Marijuana and prostitutes. We’re not pro-prostitute per se, but the Supreme Court of Canada is evaluating the issue and well, if you want to put it in your body and you have the capacity to consent, it’s your business, isn’t it? Oh yeah, new guest host Nick joins us, and there’s a jaunty tune about being British. Hip! Hip! 021: Ducky's Nuclear Reaction
We’re 21, and have no intention of slowing down. The vast majority of podcasts started never make it to 10 episodes; 90% of those don’t make it to 20. We beat the odds. Thanks for your support! This week we look at climate change and break the issue down into five questions: Are we experiencing global climate change? Is humanity contributing to climate change? Is humanity solely responsible for climate change? If yes to the above, what can we do about it? Will it matter if we try anything or not? Shiv joins us for his second episode on HQ and we talk about the theories and consequences of anthropomorphic climate change (human caused), conventional (coal) vs renewable power generation (solar, wind, wave) and the big bad dirty word: Nuclear. Yep, we talk about LiFTRs (Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors), energy consumption, heat islands, etc, and not surprisingly some of us are skeptics. 020: Don't Frak with My Facebook!
They Fraked with my Facebook and yours too. In response to a Twitter campaign under the tag #FBRape, Facebook is taking the position of banning Controversial, Hateful & Harmful speech. Sounds good in practice until you look at why, and we do. Daria returns to offer her opinion while we explain where this action came from, what the demands were and why Facebook reacted the way it did. The topic is controversial and in violation of Facebook’s new community standards. Too bad. Life isn’t black and white and we’re calling them on it. Honestly, do we really want Facebook editing our opinions? 019: Think Before You Link
This week we talk about Rob Ford, Autism, and how people are so eager to accept instruction and indoctrination without questioning. The Voice-Over-Boy joins us again (wheeee) and we try some new formatting. So give us a listen and some feedback. 018: Change Your Gendertude
There’s a lot to be said for Gender. It defines us, but how much, and what is it anyway? For those of born as a single sex/gender, it can be confusing to know where does the confusion come from, and how to deal with it. It’s a complicated issue, full of grey areas and misconceptions. Join us as Maxine returns this week to talk to us about her experiences transition from male to female as we ask questions, lots of them. Share with a frenemy, and let’s have the talk, about sex, gender, and changing one’s body instead of one’s mind. 017: Femi-Nazi Furries and Gender Suicide
Willie escapes from his cage (again) and joins us as we talk about hormones, clothes, furies and suicide. No, it’s not a nostalgia show about our teens, it’s the usual romp through the weeks headlines and events. Okay, there is some nostalgia, not that Willeh would know what we’re talking about; he wasn’t even born then. So buckle up or slam one down (not at the same time) and join us as we share our Care Bears, honor a fallen friend and try to figure out if pink really is a girls colour; and where the line is around chemically retarding puberty, cause that’s… new. Commander Chris Hadfield of the ISS records the first music video in space and we have it (well, the audio). It’s a Space Oddity for sure. You know the drill, share with a friend, share with an enemy, but share, far and wide. Where else can you hear talk about gender and listen to ambient sounds from around the house? That’s right! Here, so inflict it on those you encounter, not for our benefit but your of course!
