Julie Delpy 's New Netflix/Canal Plus Series "On The Verge"
Actress, writer, director Julie Delpy has made a career creating films that are both brutally honest and poignantly hilarious. They can feel, disarming, personal, relatable, and get under your skin in the way that great art should.  In her latest venture, the 12-episode streaming series "On The Verge", Delpy takes on the complex, overlooked demographic of the middle-aged woman. No stones left unturned here: marriage, divorce, motherhood, friendship, career, passion, loss of passion - it's all tackled with authentic transparency and whip-smart humor. Today we chat about why it is so vital that these stories are represented on the small screen, her prolific creative process, her childhood in Paris, what's next for the "Before" trilogy, her passions outside of the business, and what's next on her plate.  If you haven't streamed "On The Verge", it's a must-see - there is nothing like it on TV. Audiences everywhere are crossing their fingers for Season 2 - so please rate, review and share!  *We recorded this episode while doing an IG live and fielding questions from listeners in real-time, which was pretty cool and I think we will do more like this.

Dr. Michael Goran, Ph.D., professor of pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and co-director of the USC Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute, is here to talk about his new book, SUGARPROOF: The Hidden Dangers of Sugar That Are Putting Your Child’s Health at Risk and What You Can Do (Avery/Penguin Random House). Sugarproof busts myths about the various types of sugars and sweeteners, helps families identify sneaky sources of sugar in their diets, and suggests realistic, family-based solutions to reduce sugar consumption and protect kids. “Sugarproof” isn’t about quitting sugar entirely, it’s about becoming a smart consumer, identifying and replacing hidden sugars while reducing reliance on sweet foods & drinks as daily staples by transitioning from processed foods (70% of which contain added sugars) to a more whole foods-based diet. 73 Year Old Vegan Queen Karyn Calabrese Spills Her Wellness
Karyn Calabrese declares “she is not special”. Yet it is undeniable, she has a special gift. She has learned to listen to the knowledge innate within herself and become a leading holistic healer and teacher. Many people look at Karyn at age 73 and assume she inherited a strong matriarchy. The facts are, however, that both her mother and grandmother died at ages younger than Karyn is now. With this seeming fate at hand, she sets out to prove her genetic heredity wrong. This is where her story begins. Alone with two children to raise, she bought her first wheatgrass juicer and opened a new life of growth and prosperity with her first business, growing and distributing wheatgrass. More importantly, this began her life-long exploration into the interconnectedness between food and body and the ultimate attainment of self-insurance and inner peace. She believes it is not enough to simply eat live foods but to cleanse the body of the strong, negative, anti-life foods still in the body. Today, Karyn teaches detoxification classes throughout the year to give these lessons to others. To facilitate this process of cleansing, she opened a holistic therapy center, Karyn’s Inner Beauty Center. This is where we find Karyn today. A 73-year-old woman, who lives the full, lively life she envisioned giving herself. For as Karyn herself questions at the end of every day: “If you don’t take care of this, the most magnificent machine you’ll ever be given, where are you going to live?” Find Karyn on her IG:  https://www.instagram.com/karyncalabrese/ Her site: https://www.shopkaryns.com/link-page This episode is sponsored by Harper Coats - the perfect winter puffer! The rich, expansive palate of nature, Taoism, and Traditional Chinese Medicine provide a path that engenders a true state of bodily autonomy, reacquainting us with the rhythms and cycles of our bodies and liberating us from a dependence on healthcare practices that undermine its intelligence and flow.  Botanarchy as a concept hearkens to the idea that medicine can be both a form of resistance and a reclamation of original, authentic nature. Botanarchy offers a vision of radical feminist healthcare that is built on humanism, integrity, and respect for the flow of the natural world. Botanarchists are committed to ending the corporate co-option of the body, supporting the democratization of medicine, and empowering others to think and feel for themselves. Every gender expression benefits from radical feminist health care. We are all suffering from being underserved in a for-profit, disease-driven model that has taken power and autonomy out of the hands of the people and put it into the hands of corporations and politicians. As shepherds of this radical feminist healthcare, we aim to rescue medicine from the patriarchy by means of the following core principles: *Radical feminist healthcare is rooted in natural models that do not suppress the true nature of the body, enhancing connection to both the microcosm of the body and the macrocosm of the earth. *Radical feminist healthcare is based on thousands of years of observing and revering nature, not heterosexual cis white male bodies. *Radical feminist healthcare is tethered to natural rhythms and embraces the cycles of change.  *Radical feminist healthcare honors both light and shadow, recognizing each phase of the creative cycle as medicine — birth, growth, harvest, death, and renewal.  *Radical feminist healthcare is not based on an unattainable goal of ‘healing’, valuing the full spectrum of human experience instead. *Radical feminist healthcare is age-positive, committed to providing compassionate healthcare for all stages of personhood, exulting the menstrual cycle and menopause equally as sacred passages.  *Radical feminist healthcare refuses to industrialize the rhythms and cycles of the body. *Radical feminist healthcare will never measure health by our ability to work harder, work longer, make more money, increase our sexual potency, feel better with less sleep, compete with each other, push beyond our means and capacity.  *Radical feminist healthcare is against positing ‘wellness’ as maximizing our output in a capitalist labor market by increasing motivation and productivity. *Radical feminist healthcare allows every body to define ‘wellness’ on their own terms. *Radical feminist healthcare supports people in finding their own Tao, recovering the self not corrupted by culture.  *Radical feminist healthcare individualizes treatment for every body as a unique emanation of the Tao, recognizing that our Tao can be thwarted by multiple forms of systemic discrimination that may block us from thriving in our personhood. *Radical feminist healthcare is pro-autonomy, helping us recover the capacity to taste and feel and sense for ourselves.  *Radical feminist healthcare is insistent on inner authority, and never shaming of choice. *Radical feminist healthcare recognizes a non-binary gender spectrum beyond male and female, and is focused on balancing the masculine + feminine polarity inside all of us regardless of biological sex or gender. *Radical feminist healthcare sees masculine + feminine as principles existing in a relationship, interdependent, working together, flowing back and forth into each other. *Radical feminist healthcare acknowledges the emotions as aspects of disease, and is non-shaming of emotional states. *Radical feminist healthcare is against the immediate medicating of emotions that don’t fit the dominant narratives of ‘health’ and ‘wellness’. *Radical feminist healthcare is not fear-based and disease-driven. *Radical feminist healthcare cultivates and value receptivity, gentleness, and subtlety.  *Radical feminist healthcare empowers mothers and working families with the tools to take care of ourselves and our communities where the system has failed to protect and sustain us. *Radical feminist healthcare is oriented towards freeing us from a reliance upon privatized healthcare and allopathic methods that often harm the body and undermine its innate, elegant intelligence. *Radical feminist healthcare transmutes the darkness and discomfort of our bodies and society en masse into something new, in the alchemy of turning lead into gold.   If this manifesta speaks to you, I urge you to share it freely and wantonly! Distribute it in your communities. Demand your doctors treat you in accordance with its precepts. Love your body through the medicine of its message! In health and solidarity,  Carolyn

The New Cannabis Flora + Bast Founder Derek Chase
If you're curious about all things launching a cannabis beauty line and how it works its way into skincare, beauty and better sleep, then this is the podcast for you. I sat down with Derek Chase, founder of FLORA + BAST, Full Spectrum Skincare, was founded on the belief that "skincare and beauty is a lifestyle decision, and that natural products designed, preserved and delivered properly outperform any synthetic product.  Rather than design products the conventional way (water-based products that oxidize active ingredients, toxic preservative systems, surfactants that reduce efficacy), FLORA + BAST is changing the way healthy skin is achieved, delivering medical-grade results through simple and bioactive formulas."   This is a true insider peek into how the good old cannabis plant can be sourced and re-invented into so many exciting new healing applications.  You can find Flora + Bast at Sephora, Barney's or online at their shop.   And lucky listeners! Use the code GROOMEDLA to receive an AGE ADAPTING CBD SYSTEM (that's both products!!) for the price of one! I don't know what to say other than YASSSSS!! Only the Flora + Bast website!!

Out of Ojai and Into Africa: Designing dreams with J Brand Co-Founder Susie Crippen
Susie Crippen and I met acting in a short film around 25 years ago. It felt like a blip before she had left acting for fashion entrepreneurism. In 2005, she co-created J Brand jeans, yes, the OG ‘skinny jean’. And after that, Crippen, a stunning collection of classic pieces that look and feel like you’ve had them forever. Susie’s approach to creating successful companies, a stunning home in Ojai, a soon to be new life in Africa, 4; a new line of dresses, 4 being the women’s collective in Uganda that is sewing them - Ride 4 A Woman...all seem to be guided by a single thing - deep intuition, energetic alignment and a profound trust in both.   This is our entry point to todays chat .My big take-away….while we may not always have the things we think we need to start a successful biz, we all have the one thing that may actually be most necessary when launching - our ability to tune inward and listen.    I was poking around the interwebs about stuff for my little blurb here and I found this in the LA Times and just love it. It says everything about Susie and her commitment to growth, expansion, listening in and following that voice within that truly knows all:      LA Times: If you love it so much here, why are you moving to Africa?   Susie: I’m leaving for the exact same reason I came here. I went to a place I had never been before, and I was moved so deeply by it that I have to go back. The ultimate expression of wabi-sabi is to live a life true to you. As beautiful and wonderful as Ojai is, continually exploring who I am in this world is an intricate part of my experience. And that’s why I’m moving to Africa — because I’m not finished, and I never will be.     https://www.instagram.com/susiecrippen/ https://www.instagram.com/thisis4official/

Eriq La Salle
Eriq La Salle is a dear friend from back in the ER days when he played Dr. Peter Benton (and earned him three NAACP Image Awards and nominations for a Golden Globe Award and three Primetime Emmy Awards). What excited me about hosting him on the podcast was exploring the ways artists must proactively co-create their career longevity.    To sustain a career that spans an entire adulthood requires deeply honed skills and next-level talent, not to mention a good amount of right time-right place luck. So much of winning in the arts is totally out of our control. However, what is in our control is the mental tenacity necessary to withstand challenging times which every artist will inevitably face. It’s exactly this angle I wanted to explore with Eriq because he is an MVP of his own, very successful, career destiny. He has not missed a beat in creating a deeply rewarding expansive creative career. While he was winning as an actor, he was already creating his path as a writer and while he was pumping out novels, he was masterminding a deeply rich new chapter as a director and producer. This fascinated me because so many artists, especially actors, can be myopic about their gifts. As artists, we need to cultivate an expansive vision about our talents and see one road as an opening for several potential paths. We get into what a flexible, non-fixed mindset is as an artist and how to navigate your B and C plans while slaying your A plan. If you are in the arts, or a self-made creator of any kind, I think you’ll find this exciting and informative. Also, if you’re an actor, Eriq gives some not-to-be-missed insider tips about the long game.    Eriq is currently the executive producer (and sometimes director) of NBC’s Chicago PD.     More about Eriq:    is an American actor, director, writer and producer known for his performances in the films Coming to America (1988) and especially as He attended the Juilliard School's Drama Division for two years as a member of Group 13 (1980–84),[2] then attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Graduate Acting Program[3   In 1988, La Salle starred alongside Eddie Murphy in the movie Coming to America as Darryl Jenks. In 1994 the medical drama ER premiered on NBC with La Salle starring as Dr. Peter Benton. He held the role until leaving during the eighth season. He returned to ER for three episodes during its 15th and final season, including his uncredited appearance as himself in the opening of "Heal Thyself" to tell the audience of the death of the show's creator Michael Crichton. Also during season 15, he returned to direct an episode.[6]

Kate Northrup Wants Us To Do Less
Ever since stumbling upon Kate Northrup’s 10 day Money Love Challenge years ago - that created a massive $$$ shift for me, I have been a total Kate fan girl. Imagine my DELIGHT (!!!) when we podcasted - I mean WHOA! Some peeps go go-go over entertainment celebs - me? A bad-ass female entrepreneurs who focuses on helping women understand everything there is to know about money - from the spiritual, emotional to the cold hard material facts about how to DEAL WITH IT. Truly incredible work and what a revelation to get into how cleaning up the mess around finances (what I call Financial Feng Shui!) is an act of self-love. Yes, self-love. Add financial health to the list of manicures, hot yoga, and getting your roots done. It’s a true act of self-care to know, with unequivocal awareness, the state of our financial health. I had totally buried so much of this into the recesses of my mind - but over the past few years have awakened to the power of how important it is to be brutally honest with our financials.  Of course Kate’s book Money, A Love Story - is a tome to this that every woman MUST READ! And now she has a new book!  Do Less: A Revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management for Busy Moms Do I need to say more? Kate has a revolutionary approach to time management that every mom needs to read (ok, dads too not to mention NON PARENTS!) I can’t wait for you to listen. And for those of you who wonder about this stuff - yes, she is even yummier, more delightful, authentic, warm, lovely and BFF vibes IN REAL LIFE! More about Kate!  Northrup is a fierce advocate for revolutionizing the way we work, seeing and that women and working mothers are often under immense pressure to “just get it all done” at the end of the day without complaint.   Northrup’s book is a practical guide for mothers and working women to learn how to do less, but to still remain productive, ambitious and overall, to not feel guilty about taking a moment to reprioritize and get focused. Northrup experienced a burn-out herself during her pregnancy, when she experienced extreme fatigue and wasn’t able to maintain longer working hours. Fearful that making this shift would affect her business, Northrup was shocked when her company earned just as much as when she was overworking herself to the point of exhaustion.    In this interview we discuss:   • What is the do less method, and how to step away from the concept that doing more is the only way to be productive and successful. • How to practice body first, business second and why taking care of your body first (rest, water, a snack) will increase your productivity. • The best way to streamline your to-do-list in order to do less and still reach peak efficiency • The importance of tracking your menstrual cycle in relation to your work, which will give you a better idea of what you should be prioritizing each week. For example, during your menstrual cycle is the best time for rest and reflection. While your physical energy might not be at it’s highest, your brain is most wired for connectivity and brainstorming. • Managing your energy and your emotions at the office. • Empowering yourself to be in a position to ask for help (Hint: it’s easier than it looks!)   To hope on the fasting mimicking diet train with me - Our next PROLON group fast starts May 13th. Click here for my link where you can get 10% off (that’s $25 a box plus free shipping) - use GROOMEDLA or GROOMEDLASUB (for a subscription).
