the science to hiring: attitude first, skill set second [podcast]
In this session of the Great Work Insights Podcast, Todd Nordstrom speaks with Stephen Moulton, author of “The CEO’s Advantage--7 Keys for Hiring Extraordinary Leaders” and the President and Chief Insight Officer of Action Insight. Specifically, Moulton helps Healthcare and other client managers hire for fit. You will learn: Facts about the hiring industry. His work experience in hiring candidates for corporate jobs. Are hiring managers doing their job well? Not exactly, because they don’t know the science to it. When you know the science behind hiring, you get significant results. The importance of both attitude and skill with an applicant. Hiring mistakes take place when managers hire just for skill and don’t worry about attitude. Technical skill should never be more than half of the hiring position...the other half needs to be the attitude. If you have to pick between the two, I would pick attitude. Managers need an effective system to be able to sort through and separate who's going to be effective, have the right attitude, alignment and aptitude to be successful in the organization--no matter the position. All of that requires a system. Don’t search applicants social media before the interview--eliminates any bias. Finding people is the first thing you do. With the right people, you can make them even better. Better outcomes when you’re developing and not fixing. Hiring process is going to change, resume is still vital, but make jobs and interviews more accessible on search engine websites. For job seekers: know yourself, know what motivates you and the kind of work you want to do and build your brand. Build your story so you’re attractive to the people that are attractive to you. tips to performing at your best in business everyday [podcast]
In this session of the Great Work Insights Podcast, Todd Nordstrom speaks with Roddy Chong, a violinist and speaker known for his “high-energy performances.” Chong has toured with Shania Twain and Celine Dion, at the same time, as well as Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Kevin Costner & Modern West. People all over want to live bigger and want to have more passion. No matter the situation, when you’re presenting to one person or 1,000 people, you are on stage. What makes a person cool: When a person makes you feel a little bit better than when you enter into the interaction with that person. If someone is checking in on you and taking care of you, that is a pretty cool person and probably someone you want to do business with. Kids are alive, and that’s what we [adults] want to be, too. As adults we can self nurture ourselves with discipline to be more alive and to do things differently. Be seen and be good. Push yourself to perform your best. Go through life alive, because it will impact the people you meet. Performance of a lifetime can happen everyday. Petty is also the co-author of the New York Times Best Seller, “Worth Every Penny” with Erin Verbeck. Previously, Petty worked at Coca-Cola Enterprises as a marketer. Boutique business model: can’t compete on price, but rather make a connection to the customers and tailor to their needs. How can this business model relate to all businesses. Your brand is how people feel about you. You are a personal brand...how do people at work feel about you? How do they treat you? steven gaffney and honesty in the workplace [podcast]
In this session of the Great Work Insights Podcast, Todd Nordstrom speaks with Steven Gaffney, president of Steven Gaffney Company, an organization that deals with management consulting. Gaffney is the author of five books, including “Just Be Honest” and “Guide to Increasing Communication Flow Up, Down, and Across Your Organization.” Gaffney’s clients included, but are not limited to: U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, Marriott, Citigroup and American Express. You will learn: There is a study done awhile back that said 91 percent of people lie regularly...Everybody is a liar. We’re all liars in the sense of “withholding information”. The big problem in the workplace is not what people say, but actually what they DON’T say to each other. It’s what they leave out, and the key is if you can get that unsaid thing said, organizations can be transformed. People can make “entirely different” decisions when information is being withheld. Honest communication plays a big role in company culture. How much fear do we instill in other people? Because that’s why people often times don’t tell us the truth. When people feel safe, they are more likely to tell the truth. We don’t think the truth is critical. You can’t fix a problem that nobody tells you about and you can’t use an idea that nobody shares. Four tips to promote honesty in the workplace and make people feel safe: 1. don’t let your silence do the talking; 2. correct company folklore; 3. ask for honest feedback and 4. reward honesty and hold people accountable for dishonesty. With lack of communication, people tend to worry more and harp on the negative. Live by the fundamental rule in life: treat others the way you want to be treated, and speak the truth. Just be honest. Lot of people can handle the tough [honest] stuff if we balance it with the good stuff. Get the unsaid said. tieman h. “skipper” dippel jr. on personal dignity [podcast]
In this session of Great Work Insights Podcast, Todd Nordstrom speaks with Tieman H. (Skipper) Dippel Jr, author of “The Language of Conscience Evolution” series, including the latest and sixth book, “The Wisdom of Generations: Using the Lessons of History to Create a Values-Based Future”. You will learn: Dignity: The bottom-up sense in how we interact with people, is commonly known as respect. I try to look at it with the perspective of the top-down and why it has power and how it is the ultimate influence in how we work together. It’s vital for company culture. What influences the world? Personal dignity (in strategic sense): How satisfied people are with their life and how much often times they can control their life determines that...Focusing on it is critically important. Three powers: economics, politics and culture all influence personal dignity the world we live in. Conscience vs. convenience is a better way of thinking about the “three big powers”. The way you think matters because it has a predetermination of how you look at life. Personal dignity: it is the thought process of how we perceive to look at life and how we perceive to look at our company, how we look at our society; it is where thought really begins. Company culture = How people interact with one another. Three types of cultures that are evolving: rule of law; culture of obligation and culture of compassion and character. All of these fit together. How people think about their role in [company] culture, is probably what ultimately makes the difference. “The story of the wolf” and how we should all focus on character and destiny. A top-down approach helps us reassess life. Culture and compliance work together, but culture is what gives a real strength to compliance because it is the peer pressure that gives the unity to the organization. Making people care about the importance of company culture. Unification of diversity is the key to successful company culture. Links and Resources Mentioned: Learn more and connect with Tieman H. dr. sebastian bailey and the mind [podcast]
In this session of Great Work Insights Podcast, Todd Nordstrom speaks with Dr. Sebastian Bailey of Mind Gym Inc, who “transforms business performance by changing the way people think, feel and behave." Bailey has a PhD in Psychology and Education and co-founded Mind Gym in 2001 with Octavius Black. In addition, Bailey has written three books, including “Mind Gym: Wake Your Mind Up.” You will learn: The difference between the mind and the brain: studying the brain explains how we behave; the mind enables consciences, perception, emotions, judgment, relationships and so on. When we’re talking about the brain, we’re talking about neurons. When we’re talking about the mind, we’re talking about how we interact with the world more broadly. Why do we need to exercise the mind? How can we help people make better choices? People are different and have different experiences. Novices only have one or two approaches, experts have much bigger set of options. Mind Gym helps people becomes experts in decision making and thinking on thinking. To help people use their minds more effectively so that they get more out of life and give more to others. Everyone puts off something that they need to do or deal with. jenn lim and finding happiness in the workplace [podcast]
In this session of the Great Work Insights Podcast, Todd Nordstrom speaks with Jenn Lim, CEO, co-founder and Chief Happiness Officer of Delivering Happiness. The organization aims to help companies find science-based happiness within their business culture. Before Delivering Happiness, Lim was a consultant at Zappos, writing the Zappos Culture Book. In addition, Lim participates in TED talks and speaks at conferences around the world, talking about implementing happiness in company culture. You will learn: How the idea and creation of the Delivering Happiness organization came to be. We like to suck the fluffiness out of happiness, because we are able to measure it through scientific research. Happier employees = Happier customers = Successful business (sustainable and profitable)--which in the end creates meaning to our lives. First step for managers, ask yourself: Do you even believe in this concept? Know that it’s not easy to incorporate happiness, it takes years of effort--have to stay committed to the idea. Managers: Boil it down to the basics, be transparent about it, this is what we believe in, this is what we are going to do and we all want you employees to be happy first. Levers of happiness (for employees): giving more sense of control, giving them a sense of progress and giving a sense of connectedness. At the end of the day, if we can apply these concepts of science and how it affects happiness and having that aligned higher purpose, that is basically the stepping stones of seeing business results. Be happy, but we’re not saying “be Zappos”--Zappos has a unique company culture that might not fit into other business industries. How her message has changed organizations and people for the better. tim sanders and the evolving recruitment process [podcast]
In this session of the Great Work Insights Podcast, Todd Nordstrom speaks with Tim Sanders, a strategic consultant to brands, associations and government agencies. Previously, Sanders was the CEO of tech startup Net Minds and Chief Solutions Officer at Yahoo and also serving as its leadership coach. In addition, Sanders has authored three books, including: “Love Is The Killer App: How to Win Business & Influence Friends”, “The Likeability Factor” and “Today We Are Rich: Harnessing the Power of Total Confidence”. You will learn: The resume system is broken--people are using it as a first basis instead of a well developed interview. Hire for fit, not resume fitness. New app (Good.Co) that can see if applicants are a good fit for the company culture based on a personality quiz. Companies need a resume, not the other way around. Understanding the new working generation (millennials). Companies need to be much better about making it easy for Gen Y to understand the ‘why’ for joining the company. Corporations can accomplish this by creating videos and corporate resumes of why they want millennial applicants to join their organization. Corporations need to get over their enterprise ego. Change is driven by money. Doing the right thing is always a good trigger for action, doing the ‘rich’ thing is a great trigger for action. You have to do both. 25-200 rule: anything companies do to decrease customers time to decide by 25% increases sales by 200%. Job seekers: look for a friendly referral--find the right work system that makes you happy We’re all micro publishers of our little publishing networks, so it’s never been easier to ask for referrals. Previously, Willis was one of the founding partners of Prosper Publishing Holdings, which grew as the largest one-on-one business coaching company in the world. In addition, Willis coauthored “The One Minute Entrepreneur” with Ken Blanchard, which became a #1 New York Times bestselling book. Work and life are not separate--thanks to digital technology, we now can bring work home with us. We are never fully removed from our work. Harmony is the idea of having a multidimensional perspective of your life. Consider how we measure our happiness in life, are we given guidelines on how to be happy and successful in life? mark sanborn and developing leadership [podcast]
In this session of the Great Work Insights Podcast, Todd Nordstrom speaks with Mark Sanborn, CSP, CPAE, President of the National Speakers Association, member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, author of eight books, and president of Sanborn & Associates Inc. Throughout his career, Sanborn clients have included Costco, FedEx, Cisco, KPMG and ESPN. You will learn: His journey to becoming a leadership expert started with a failed speaking contest when he was 10. We’ve got a choice [when we fail], we can say it doesn’t really matter...or when it’s appropriate and it’s important to us, it really does matter. The ability to communicate well is important concerning leadership; to have the substance and the style, the expertise and the eloquence. Deep down inside, leadership is about getting in touch with what is important to you, what interests you, and what really matters. Leaders have two qualities: they know what matters. they can make it matter to others. Leaders are both born and made--it also correlates to the skills developed. Leadership is power with people, not power over people. No one can prevent you from being exceptional--consider the mail carrier who goes above and beyond his duties. How to do our jobs differently, taking into account the people we serve and our duties. Lead individuals, not a mass of people and believe in the people you lead.
