And the Award Goes to…New Orleans Chef Sue Zemanick!
There is no denying that New Orleans food is some of the best in the world, and part of that reason is that we have world-class chefs here that not only honor and continue culinary traditions, but also bring gourmet innovation onto the scene. On this episode of GoNOLA Radio, our hosts Lorin Gaudin and George Ingmire get to know a New Orleans culinary leader. Chef Sue Zemanick, who is executive chef of the beloved local restaurants Gautreau’s and Ivy, just won the James Beard Award for Best Chef South, adding to her list of prestigious accolades. On this episode, she shares with us her experience at the awards – nerves, speeches and all. Chef Zemanick also talks with us about the explosion in the food scene here in recent years. New Orleans has had a surge in dining options and culinary talent, and not only has she had her finger on the pulse of the climate of cuisine in the city, she has played a significant part in setting the bar for local flavor extremely high. From Gautreau’s classic New Orleans cuisine and fine-dining atmosphere to Ivy’s young, hip lounge feel with great cocktails and small plates, Chef Zemanick has had a chance to explore more than just one side of her culinary passion. Zemanick also lets us in on the food that she loves to eat when she’s not working, including the cuisine that inspires and excites her. New Orleans Songs and Stories with Andrew Duhon
New Orleans singer/songwriter Andrew Duhon has done a good bit of international travel, from the UK to Spain to Sri Lanka and from the Gulf Coast to West Coast in the United States. He travels in part to stay “as uncomfortable as possible,” channeling that unrest in his songwriting, but always returns back to New Orleans, where he continues to “fall in love with a different part of it” each time. Andrew’s songwriting, travels, love for New Orleans and more is discussed in this episode of GoNOLA Radio with our hosts Lorin Gaudin and George Ingmire. The New Orleans artist’s last album “The Moorings” is Grammy nominated and includes bluesy, heartfelt songs that can be heard along with others at his local shows on Frenchmen Street at Three Muses and d.b.a. as well as New Orleans festivals like French Quarter Fest and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The latter he plays on Friday, May 2 at 12:20 p.m. on the Fais Do Do stage. Also in this episode, hear what Andrew and our hosts love about Jazz Fest, including their top fest food favorites. New Orleans City Park: Tranquility in the Heart of an Urban Landscape
New Orleans is a uniquely vibrant urban city, but located smack dab in the middle is a vast green oasis filled with a wealth of treasures. New Orleans City Park is one of the biggest, oldest, and most beautiful urban parks in the country and it offers so much for locals and visitors alike to see, do, and experience throughout the year. On this episode of GoNOLA Radio, our hosts Mikko, Lorin Gaudin, and George Ingmire sit down and talk with Chief Development Officer and Director of Public Affairs of City Park, John Hopper, and he gives us the highlights of this peaceful - yet active - New Orleans park. With the weather being just perfect this time of year, more people than ever take advantage of the many ways to enjoy the outdoors throughout the park. From miles of walking, jogging, and biking paths around the lake (and bike rentals!), to tennis courts, horse-riding, an 18-hole golf course, and pedal-boating, there are plenty of things to do in City Park. For family fun, you can enjoy the brand new mini-golf course, City Putt, as well as Storyland, a theme park filled with huge storybook sculptures, and Carousel Gardens, an amusement park featuring an antique carousel. The New Orleans Museum of Modern Art is also on the grounds, along with the beautiful Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Further enjoy nature in the 60-acre Couturie Forest, a 60-acre forest of native trees, scenic waterways, and local wildlife (a great spot for bird watching, as well). Recently opened Morning Call is a great addition to the park, offering delicious coffee and beignets, as well as fare like jambalaya and gumbo 24 hours a day. Besides big events like Voodoo Fest held on City Park's festival grounds, you can also catch music almost all year long at the Thursdays at Twilight garden concert series. Coming up this holiday season is the always-anticipated Celebration in the Oaks, running the day after Thanksgiving through January 4. Locals and visitors have been enjoying this festival of oak trees twinkling with lights for generations, and the usual delights like the Cajun Night Before Christmas display, the Who Dat tree, the train, and Mr. Bingle will all be there, as well as some new surprises. The park is packed with activities, events, and opportunities, and it’s only getting better; plans for a splash park are in the works to help folks cool off in the warmer summer months, and more additions and improvements are on the way.
