Light of the Vedas: Bhakti Yoga
The essence of Bhagavad Gita is Bhakti Yoga. Bhakti refers to devotion to the Supreme Lord. Krishna declares Himself the Supreme Lord and Absolute Truth throughout the Bhagavad Gita advising the yogi to meditate upon Himself with love. The text culminates in the instruction to surrender to Krishna in full devotion making him the object of all meditation and worship. This is an esoteric secret requiring the personal qualification of devotion, austerity and non-enviousness. One must hear Bhagavad Gita from a proper source to enter into this great mystery.

Light of the Vedas: Jnana Yoga
Krishna discusses Jnana Yoga. Jnana Yoga is practiced by someone advanced enough in the path of Karma Yoga to take Sanyassa or to renounce the performance of prescribed duties in the world. They then devote themselves to the study of scripture as the primary means of distinguishing truth from illusion, intent on attaining Brahman or spiritual perfection. Krishna analyzes matter and spirit in great detail, including how to distinguish the three modes of material nature, the divine and demonic natures, the nature of the soul, the nature of God, and the nature of the world and how the laws of the world work as well as how all of these factors interact.

Light of the Vedas: Karma Yoga
Krishna discusses karma yoga, which is the performance of ones duties as prescribed in the Vedas, but in a detached state of consciousness. This consciousness arises from transcendental knowledge. Transcendental knowledge comes to one through an authorized spiritual teacher and originates with Krishna. If one grasps after the fruits of their work, identifying as matter rather than spirit, one is subjected to samsara, or bondage to the cycle of rebirth under the law of karma. Transcendental knowledge frees on of sin and liberates one from samsara.

Before entering into the higher subject matter of the Bhagavat Purana, one should study the Bhagavad Gita, or Song of God. Part of the Mahabharata, this literature of 700 verses is a spiritual discussion between Krishna and Arjuna in the midst of two armies about to fight. It is a road map of  the various systems of Yoga, explaining the different conceptions of the Absolute Truth, culminating in loving surrender to God. It begins with the lamentations expressed by Arjuna in the face of the performance of his duties as a warrior.

Sukadeva Goswami arrives in the assembly of sages to instruct Maharaja Pariksit and prepare him for death. Suta Goswami is in attendance and memorizes the spiritual discussion he witnesses. He later conveys this discussion to the sages of Naimasaranya who are performing a 1000 year sacrifice. These sages ask questions for the benefit of mankind in the age of Kali. The structure of the Bhagavat Purana is also discussed.

From his birth Maharaja Pariksit was of saintly character, having been personally protected by Vishnu in the womb, immediately following the end of the battle of Kurukshetra, the central theme of the Mahabharat. During his reign he kept the influence of the materialistic age of Kali at bay. Once on a hunting expedition, overcome by fatigue and thirst, he offended a great sage absorbed in meditation. Being cursed by the sages son to die in seven days, Maharaja Pariksit assumed the determination to fast while absorbed in spiritual consciousness.

The Egyptian priest Abammon discusses the appearance of supernatural beings which are deceptive and mislead one, posing as someone they are not. This is due to not performing the magical ritual properly. If done properly a genuine god will appear and they are unmistakably real. The god illuminates ones intuition deep within ones soul and so there is an immediate recognition of the gods true position.

Through self realization, they can reattain to their true spiritual nature and become greater than supernatural beings. In bondage, the human transmigrates through various forms, attached to them and identifying with them.
