A Conversation with Gabriela Nelson – Travelling to Zanzibar
Gabriela Nelson is currently pursuing a Masters in City Planning at the University of Pennsylvania and also works at the university as a Building Bridges to Wealth Recruitment Specialist and a Resource Coordinator in their Study Aboard Office. From Philadelphia to NYC to Costa Rica and Cuba, she has researched and studied numerous accounts of urban revitalization and emerging city centres. She is a great example of a young black woman doing her thing!
She was able to travel to Zanzibar and during this conversation, we discuss a range of topics including:
Preconceived notions when travelling to a new country
Being African-American and travelling to Africa
Ties between Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania
Top 3 Quotes:
Zanzibar is a place of mixed culture, I stepped off the plane and almost didn't know where I was, I didn't feel like I was in Africa, I didn't feel like I was anywhere.
No matter what the families I spoke to visibly looked like, they all claimed Arab descent.
Studying abroad is a great way to way to meet new people and learn about different cultures and ways of living.
