Masters Recap and 'Paterno' Review
Golf is and will always be among the most popular sports in the world with many major tournaments held annually, but none compare to The Masters. The 2018 Masters Tournament was particularly exciting as evidenced by the 18% jump over last year’s ratings - the main reason for that is due to the return of Tiger Woods. He may not have won, but the fact that someone who was considered to have “fallen from grace” last year returned to the sport at all is worth celebrating. In this episode, Lindsay and Whitney share their takeaways from this year’s Masters Tournament. Not only did they react to the wins and losses, but they also provide their opinions regarding some of the more obvious social issues being displayed on live TV. They also discuss HBO’s “Paterno” movie and provide commentary on how the film portrayed the scandal as well as why more people should’ve been held accountable.   “I've always been intrigued by the mystique of the Masters." – Lindsay Grinstead   Highlights of Today’s Episode: The observable social inequalities during the Masters Tournament. What separates the Masters from other tournaments? Their comments on Tiger Woods' performance. Their reaction to the whole “No Phones Allowed” rule. Is the sporting world full of hypocrites? What they liked about this year's Masters. The story of the movie “Paterno” and why it was so moving. Cinderella's, Champions, ESPN Lists & More!
How’s your bracket so far? Well, the girls’ brackets are a certified mess after what happened over the weekend. It’s crazy to think that on the one hand, it’s exciting to see underdogs like Loyola rising against top caliber teams, and on the other your supposed “final four” team has been more or less disappointing this season. We don’t know who will get to the finals, but we are sure of one thing: This pod’s hosts aren’t bracket experts. In this episode, Lindsay and Whitney discuss the current state of their brackets and the remaining horses they have in this race. All the Glory of March Madness & a Little Tiger!
Upset after upset after upset. That’s how the first week of March Madness was so far, with everyone’s brackets bleeding red with all the red marks. Even the girls’ brackets weren’t safe from the onslaught of upsets. But, upsets are nothing to be upset about! What’s great about upsets is how it really brings back the unpredictability of sports, and it shows even the most reliable sports data is prone to error. The same unpredictability reminds us why we love sports! In this episode, the girls discuss the incredible first week of March Madness. They go over some of their picks and how their favorites fared, they analyze some of the reasons why the upsets happened, and reflect on how college sports can sometimes be more exciting compared to pros. They also describe some of the funniest tweets from athletes as well as their fans.   “Watching the best in the world do what they're best at is really exciting." – Whitney Melancon   Highlights of Today’s Episode: What happened to Whitney's bracket? March Madness!!!
We all love predicting how a sports season will go, but no other month makes it more fun than March Madness. We’re talking about making brackets and all the analytics and science involved. It’s a deep rabbit hole if you really get into it, but it’s also fun as you get to know a thing or two about how sports analysts do their job and it will make you realize they’re not just making things up. In this episode, the girls go over team predictions, free agencies, contract extensions, and their own brackets. They share their thoughts on the NCAA being investigated, how much the NCAA earns on games alone, and what to look forward to this season.   “All the science in the world can't predict a team just not having a rhythm one night and just being off." – Whitney Melancon   Highlights of Today’s Episode: Whitney's complete bracket How the investigation affected NCAA fans. The amount of money the games earned and will earn this season. Tips for building your bracket. Their favorite teams and where they think they'll finish. Olympics Glory!!
We are back, and we’re really into the Winter Olympics this year. It may be cold in Pyeongchang, but the hype is pretty hot! From the funny frozen faces of the ice skating competition to the high-risk nature of bobsledding, this year’s Winter Olympics surpassed our expectations. It’s just amazing what athletes can do in the snow, especially when you know how difficult it is to master a sport on dry land. In this episode, we discuss a lot about the happenings in this year’s Winter Olympics, from the amazing stunts and athletes all the way to the drama and stories both on the venue and on social media. Sports isn’t all fun and games after all, so why should the Olympics be any different? We also spend time sharing our views on gender and racial diversity in sports as well as discuss the issue with NBA superstar LeBron James and a Fox News anchor over a Trump comment.   “To see what the athletes can do out there on the snow is just mind boggling to me." – Lindsay Grindstead   Highlights of Today’s Episode: What makes the Winter Olympics special compared to the Summer Olympics. Super Bowl Winners, Losers and JT!
The Super Bowl is over, and the Philadelphia Eagles won over the New England Patriots despite having the odds stacked against them. The crowd favorite was always the team with the dynasty, but the Eagles made sure they put a stop to it. The game itself had so many offensive plays, with both teams trying to outscore the other, but the lack of defense from the Patriots caused their downfall. Despite our comments on the Super Bowl having a weak momentum this year, we are happy to say it ended in a spectacular fashion; a perfect way to end a great season. In this episode, we discuss some of the highlights during the Super Bowl. We put the spotlight on what made the Patriots lose, the crazy and dangerous fan celebrations in Philly, the controversial plays and substitutions, and why the Patriots losing was a good thing for the next football season. We also share our thoughts on the performances, commercials, and the entirety of the Super Bowl this year.   “The last thing you want in a Super Bowl is for one team to run away with it." – Lindsay Grinstead   Highlights of Today’s Episode: Our takeaways on the Eagles beating the Patriots. What the Patriots did wrong. Why Bill Belichick benching their starting quarterback was an odd move. Why everyone assumed the Patriots can still come back from behind. Nick Foles and Drew Brees comparison. The crazy Eagles fans celebrations. The super bowl performances and commercials. Our thoughts on other teams and players this season. Tom Brady’s ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan cheering for the Eagles   Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  Doug Pederson, Philadelphia Head Coach for his impressive play calling and gutsiness. We're Back for 2018 & the NFL Playoffs!
GOS -We're Back for 2018 & the NFL Playoffs! The girls are back for another year of sports, and what better way to start their first episode for 2018 than reacting to the crazy college football finals? It’s definitely the kind of game we’ve all been looking forward to, and while they did predict this victory early in the season, that’s not to take away from Georgia fans. The championship hype was all over that stadium, and Georgia fought and emerged as one of the best this season, but they just couldn’t finish. Saban and Alabama are just too good at this point. More than the college football finals, the girls also discuss the mind-blowing Saints-Vikings game that literally erupted into chaos when time ran out, why rookie Juju Schuster is our official celebration rookie of the year, and why Tom Brady is still fantastic despite being underpaid. They also explain why the 2017 rookie class might be the best the NFL has ever seen.   “Time in Atlanta has started to move at a glacial pace." – Whitney Melancon   Highlights of Today’s Episode: Why Atlanta's been on a rough patch since 2017. What stood out during the college Bowl games. Their thoughts on John Gruden being back with the Raiders. Their reaction to the Saints-Vikings game. Why just having a great quarterback in the NFL doesn't guarantee a championship. Universities where their football rookies are making an impact. The teams they would like to see in the Superbowl.   Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  The three heavily criticized Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks who rose above the criticism and played their heart out. This week’s LVP award goes to –  The Saints-Vikings end game was chaotic and put a lot of betting money on the line.   Whitney MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  The Jacksonville Jaguars for making it to the AFC championship despite being the most forgettable team in the league. This week’s LVP award goes to – Will Wade threw a temper tantrum that would embarrass Cam Newton during the LSU-Alabama basketball game.   Love the show? Playoffs are Set & Jimbo Madness!
Weekends in college football just continue to exceed our expectations this year, and we think it’s about to get even more fun with the playoffs looming. Speaking of playoffs, we finally have our college football playoff teams, and we believe the selection is just right. There were teams that statistically had a better year that weren’t included, though. Makes you wonder how the committee decides these things. Coaching rotations are still ongoing, and we seriously can’t believe the deal Jimbo Fisher had with Texas A&M. We think it’s more egregious than what Roger Goodell has, and that’s saying something! And for the first time since the restrictions were removed, we actually think the celebrations are about to peak, what with all the crazy stuff they’ve been doing on the field.   “The committee really values wins and losses. Wins and losses matter." – Lindsay Grinstead   Highlights of Today’s Episode: Why the committee got the college playoff team selection right. Why people are better than computers when it comes to playoffs team selection. Should USC be more upset than Ohio State for not being included in the bracket? Jimbo Fisher’s ridiculous 10-year contract with Texas A&M and more coaching rotations. Why the recruiting in Texas is so good. Are players actually celebrating too much?   Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  The NFL for their My Cause, My Cleats program. This week’s LVP award goes to –  New York Giants organization for being a huge mess this season and the unceremonious benching of Eli Manning.   Whitney MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  Joe Flacco for mocking Jameis Winston; Jimmy Sexton, for having negotiated more than 700 million dollars in contracts for NFL players and coaches in 2015 which is probably over 800 million dollars today. This week’s LVP award goes to – Scott Frost going to Nebraska. This news broke during the UCF-Memphis game which could've waited until UCF savored their victory first; Rob Gronkowski took a cheap shot against Tre'davious White.     Love the show? Coaching Carousel and Touchdown Celebrations!
And just like that, the regular season for college football is over. So many fun matchups and much more drama both in and out of the game. The time for playoffs is almost at hand, and we’re excited to see who comes out on top this season. Before we get to that, the girls are here to go over the crazy things that happened over the past week. The coaching carousel, Michael Crabtree and Aqib Talib brawling during game, upsets, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s updated bust, last week was definitely one of the most exciting weeks in sports. In this episode, we discuss the coaches who got hired, fired, and those who deserved it. Seriously, the stuff that’s happening off the field is so much more dramatic. We place our bets on which team makes the playoffs this year and the matchups we want to see. We also dive in on this week’s best NFL Celebrations which we think get better every week.   “There is still so much up in the air with who is going to make the playoffs." – Lindsay Grinstead   Highlights of Today’s Episode: Why Rivalry Weekend kicked off last Friday. Why Auburn winning over Alabama matters when it comes to the playoffs. Would the Committee take a two-loss SEC team? Our guess on the four teams that make the playoffs. The infamous coaching carousel and why it’s still not over. Bad coaching prospects for good teams. NFL Celebrations we loved over the weekend.   Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  This year’s college football season was so good. This week’s LVP award goes to –  The Michael Crabtree-Aqib Talib brawl during the Raiders-Broncos game.   Whitney MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  Odell Beckham Jr. for trying to ask the LSU band to play the “Neck” song. This week’s LVP award goes to – Too many sideline fights during games.  Love the show? Join our fans on the net and leave us your honest feedback! Rivalry Week is Here!
Nothing makes any sport better than having rivalries. Federer and Nadal, Pacquiao and Marquez, Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, rivalries make games more exciting and could be enough to fill an otherwise empty stadium. In the world of college football, they take rivalries to the next level with some teams being rivals for more than a hundred years! Not only that, but these teams also play for cool and sometimes really, really weird items. You wouldn’t believe the bizarre history behind these trinkets and tokens. Other than rivalries, we discuss the issue with Chip Kelly and the Gators, the ubiquitous Jon Gruden to Tennessee rumor, and our pod-favorite Serena Williams. We also celebrate the new touchdown celebrations we’ve seen, and boy are they getting wilder!   “A rivalry is a rivalry and wild things happen at rivalry games." – Whitney Melancon   Highlights of Today’s Episode: Weird and cool items teams are fighting for this week and the stories behind them. Really, really OLD rivalries in College Football. Why playing for Paul Bunyan’s axe was one of the craziest traditions. Chip Kelly Watch is in full effect for Gator Nation. Why Lane Kiffin could be behind some of the fake news in college football. Fun touchdown celebrations this week.   Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  Serena Williams had a great week and was featured in a tearjerker commercial. This week’s LVP award goes to –  Baker Mayfield for being douchey, especially to fans despite having Heisman potential; Jameis Winston for being accused of groping an Uber driver.   Whitney MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  New Orleans Saints for becoming the best team in the NSC South despite a 0-2 start. This week’s LVP award goes to – Baker Mayfield; The song used during the Patriots-Oakland game in Mexico City was La Bamba which was insulting.       Love the show? Gators Fire Coach & Big Ten Stinks It Up!
We had another week of exciting football both on and off the field, especially the latter. Things are getting hot and messy with the Gators not only getting gutted by Georgia, but also by firing their head coach. We think McElwain’s issue needs to have a second look, but we’ll get to that later. Moving forward, we can’t believe Alabama isn’t the number one team, and the torch was handed to Georgia. We all know Alabama is still the team to beat. Rather, Nick Saban is still the coach to beat. We think the Big Ten needs a “Bad Day” montage and we suggest a few coaches who need to get their act together if they don’t want to end up being another McElwain. We also highlight funny NFL celebrations and praise athletes outside of football.     "Everyone is trying to compete with Nick Saban." – Lindsay Grinstead     Highlights of Today’s Episode: Why the season is just so bizarre so far and why our predictions were totally off. The Big Ten sucked so bad last Saturday. Why offensive battles are better than defensive battles in football. Who we think wins this weekend. Issues for the Florida Gators issues. The reason behind McElwain getting fired needs to be looked into. How do you beat Nick Saban? Funny NFL Celebrations involving Travis Kelce and a pretend potato sack race.   This Week’s Coach on the Hot Seat Award: Ben McAdoo of the New York Giants. One of the most uninspiring coach we’ve ever seen. Dirk Koetter of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For just being bad at his job. Kevin Sumlin of Texas A&M. November has always been Sumlin’s worst month.   Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  Shalane Flanagan for being the first American woman to win the New York Marathon since 1977. This week’s LVP award goes to –  Jameis Winston for doing a really disgusting pre-game speech.   Whitney MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  The Houston Astros for winning their first World Series championship in franchise history. This week’s LVP award goes to – The crazy fights over the weekend, mainly the one involving the Jaguars and the Bengals. Love the show? Join our fans on the net and leave us your honest feedback! The Gators, Top 25 Losses and Football Craziness in the NFL
Welcome to Girls on the Sideline, where we talk about the hottest in sports! The wonderful thing about football this year is anyone can beat anyone. That was proven last week when unranked teams beat contenders and reputable teams didn’t make the coveted top 25 for the first time in so many years! Some say it’s crazy; we think it’s exciting!  More than just football, we also discuss the really disappointing loss of the US Soccer team to Trinidad & Tobago, which we have to say is so embarrassing. We didn’t make the Olympics last time, and now we couldn’t even make the World Cup. It’s really sad seeing the hype was real and fan turnout was so much better this year than any year we remembered.    "We live in a world where UCF and USF are ranked teams, and Florida and Florida State are not." – Lindsay Grinstead   Highlights of Today’s Episode: Kevin Sumlin finally showed us he’s a capable coach. Tributes to Tom Petty will always be a great thing. Why Gators fans were so awesome despite losing to Texas A&M. Why we think Florida is not utilizing their players’ full potential. The coach we think could be the next Tom Herman. The PAC-12 didn’t fare well this weekend. Why we shouldn’t leave rankings to fan votes. Aaron Rodgers and his bad injury. The country’s biggest sports embarrassment.   Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to – Chief of Police who invited JT Brown and his teammates of the Tampa Bay Lightning to see what a typical police officer’s day’s like instead of condemning them for protesting. This week’s LVP award goes to – The play-by-play commentator for Rams-Jaguars game who was obviously reading the teleprompter.   Whitney MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to – Adrian Peterson who had an unbelievably explosive night, telling fans he’s not done yet. This week’s LVP award goes to – Crummy touchdown callback during the Jet-Patriots game.   Love the show? Join our fans on the net and leave us your honest feedback! Women Can Like Football!!
Welcome to Girls on the Sideline, where we take on the hot issues in sports and everything else related to it. We had a lot of bad things happen last week. To start things off, we address the issue with Cam Newton and his sexist “joke” to a female reporter. It’s 2017, women are allowed to like and actually know their way around sports! It’s not even the remark itself, but the way he said it that makes our blood boil. Speaking of things that make the blood boil, our girl Jemele Hill got suspended recently for her controversial tweets. All we can say is we’re more than happy to have her as a third host if she wants! Moving away from the “bad stuff,” we put the spotlight on college football due to HUGE upsets and some SCC teams not making the top 25 cut for the first time in years. Despite the bad news, this year’s football season is turning out to be more fun than we expected!   "I need a separation of state and sport." – Whitney Melancon   Highlights of Today’s Episode: Cam Newton’s sexist remark to a female reporter regarding routes, his excuse, and why it made things worse. The Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse issue and John Moffat’s infuriating Pro Cam comment. Jemele Hill’s two-week suspension over her “boycott” tweet. Is ESPN overcompensating with Jemele’s suspension? Jimmy Jones’ threat to “kneelers” SCC Top 25 polls shaking up, huge upsets. Why Georgia is still the only team who can beat Atlanta. The Mark Rick we saw last week isn’t the UGA one. Three college football contenders fall out of the Top 25. Why the NFL right now feels like every team has a chance.   This Week’s Kevin Sumlin Coach on the Hot Seat Award: Not a coach on the hot seat, but a hot seat take: The Texas A&M for hosting a game without running water in their stadium.   Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  David Letterman, for his hysterical speech during the unveiling of Peyton Manning's statue. This week’s LVP award goes to –  Miami Dolphins Offensive Line Coach, Chris Foerster for recording a video while snorting some “white powder”   Whitney MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  Florida's old school song and their tribute to Tom Petty. This week’s LVP award goes to – NFL injuries, there were so many injuries; big time season-changing injuries.   Love the show? Join our fans on the net and leave us your honest feedback! SEC Coaches & Paying College Players
Welcome to Girls on the Sideline! This week, the girls focus on college football, scandals, weird coaches, and dominant teams. They discuss the shocking loss of LSU to Troy University that happened over the weekend and spark the question: Did this loss prove Ed Oregon is struggling as head coach? They also discuss Alabama’s dominance and how they think there is an abundance of head coaching changes in the SEC because of their dominance as well as how that 41-0 loss by Tennessee to Georgia was bad, but what made it worse was coach Butch Jones’ press conference.     Highlights of Today’s Episode: Florida and LSU right now are pretty bad. Georgia Tech might be the only team who can beat Alabama. Why Charlie Strong is killing it in USF. The controversy involving the NCAA, Adidas, University of Louisville, players, and the FBI. Do scandals affect how fans feel about collegiate sports? How big a business is college sports? How many hours per week does a typical division 1 college player devote to their sport? Why Rick Pitino's trending on twitter.     This Week’s Kevin Sumlin Coach on the Hot Seat Award: Butch Jones for having an emotional outburst during the press conference after the game.     Lindsay’s MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  Unfortunately, the recent issues didn’t let Lindsay have an MVP this week. This week’s LVP award goes to –  Baltimore fans booing prayer for kindness, unity, and equality. Also, for Lindsay being bad at “Guess the Line”     Whitney MVP & LVP of the Week: This week’s MVP award goes to –  The NFL feels fun again. This week’s LVP award goes to – Why are we still talking about players kneeling? There are so many issues more important out there.   Love the show?
