Our special guest will be 82 year old and 34 year FDNY veteran Rescue 5 Lt. Mike Barone returning for part 2. He was assigned to proby school in 1962 and was assigned to Engine 18. In 1967 he transferred to Squad 5 and then again to Ladder 18 in 1968 until 1981. He transferred to Ladder 85 in 1982 until moving over to Rescue 5 in 1984. In 1990 he was promoted to Lt. and assigned to Ladder 3. He moved back to Staten Island going to Ladder 80 in 1991. He made it back to Rescue 5 in 1994 and stayed there until his retirement in 1996. He was at the 23rd street fire in 1966, was at an actual scaling ladder rescue, worked the night of the Blackout in 1977 and has many more incredible stories. You don’t want to miss this one. Our special is Former SEAL Team Six Leader Robert J. O’Neill. He is one of the most highly decorated combat veterans of our time. He served at SEAL Team Two, SEAL Team Four, and eight years at the legendary SEAL Team Six. Having taken part in and led over 400 combat missions, Rob operated in Liberia, The Balkans, The Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean, Ukraine, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Having been decorated 53 times, his awards include two Silver Stars for gallantry in action against the enemy, four Bronze Stars with Valor to denote heroism against the enemy, a Joint Service Commendation Medal with Valor, a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Valor, three Presidential Unit Commendations and three Combat Action ribbons to name a few. Some of Rob’s qualifications include Military Free-Fall Jumpmaster, Tandem Tethered Bundle Master, Naval Special Warfare Scout / Sniper, Breacher, Master Naval Parachutist, Master Training Specialist, Diving Supervisor, Range Officer in Charge for Small Arms, Close Quarters Battle, Breaching, Laser System Safety Officer among many others. Rob took part in the rescue for Operation Red Wings, which extracted the Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell, he was the lead jumper for the rescue operation that saved Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates and he was a Team Leader for Operation Neptune’s Spear, the mission to kill Osama bin Laden. Rob is co-founder of Special Operators Transition Foundation, specializing in assisting Special Operations Forces veterans with the successful transition from the service into their next great career in corporate America. He was appointed on September 2, 1978 and was assigned to Engine 222 (Triple Deuce) in Oct. 1978. In 1980 he transferred to Ladder 175. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1986 and assigned to Engine 1 and then transferred to Ladder 24 in 1990. Promoted to Captain in 1992 and was assigned to Engine 214 in 1993-99. He was Promoted to Battalion Chief in 1999 and covered in Division 11 until getting the spot in the 46 Battalion in 2000. He went to the First Line Supervisors Training Program from 2010 to 2014 and became the First Deputy Fire Commissioner from 2014 to 2017 becoming one of the highest ranking African-Americans to ever serve the department. Chief Turner has responded to some of the city’s worst disasters, including the Sept. 11 attacks and the Fathers Day fire in Astoria. He Retired on November 17, 2017. You don’t want to miss this one. Long before the horrific Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911 or the World Trade Center attack of September 11, 2001 there was this tragedy that challenged New York City. On the night of December 5, 1876 as a play found itself in intermission just prior to its final act, smoke & flames would erupt within the Brooklyn Theatre. Despite the best efforts of stagehands and staff alike, chaos and panic would soon spread with the same ferocity as the flames. When all was said & done, more than 250 people were dead. Our special guest will be retired FDNY Lt. Paul Rogers who served with the City of New York for 32 years. Currently, he is one the principals of ESRG ( Energy Response Safety Group), which is a company that does first responder training, hazard assessment, commissioning, decommissioning and SME emergency response for Energy Storage Systems and other energy sources (PHEW.. sounds pretty important :)). As an FDNY officer, He was Fire Prevention Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the FDNY Special Operations Command (SOC) Hazardous Materials Division. Paul continues to serve on the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force (USAR-1) as a Hazardous Materials Manager, and had previously deployed to Haiti following the devastating earthquake. He also served as an FDNY liaison to the U.S. Marine Corps Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF) and has participated in numerous projects for the National Grid, Consolidated Edison, AT&T and Kinder Morgan within the renewable energy sector.
