I joined former mayors Joe Paolino Jr. and Angel Taveras to provide a series of education recommendations designed to help Mayor-elect Brett Smiley most effectively transform education in Providence public schools.  For decades, our kids and families have been yearning for high-quality public schools and it is our hope that throughout Mayor-elect Smiley’s tenure, our schools will make a dramatic leap towards that goal. We know that our kids can succeed because we have examples throughout the country, and right here in Providence, of how to address our challenges, how to support our students, and how to raise their performance. High-achieving charter schools have shown that all of our kids can excel when they are supported properly. Every student deserves that kind of environment and it is important that our schools have the ability to do what has been proven to work: namely, a longer school day, longer school year, effective teachers and principal autonomy to pick and manage their staff. We each served as Mayor at different times and under different circumstances. However, Mayor Joe Paolino Jr., Angel Taveras and I, have reached the same conclusion and we speak with one voice on this issue. As such, we felt it was urgent to share our thoughts with Mayor-elect Smiley and with the families and students of Providence. Below are our recommendations: Work with PTU to fix the unworkable management structure or push for an “all public charter” system.Invest in 21st century school buildings. Work with key stakeholders and amplify their voices. Work with key stakeholders and amplify their voices. We all wish Mayor-elect Smiley the best as he prepares to lead our city forward and I know he will do everything in his authority as the next Mayor to provide high-quality education opportunities for every child in every neighborhood. Sincerely,Jorge O. ElorzaBe sure to read our full letter to Mayor-elect Smiley.https://www.providenceri.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Education-Recommendations-Letter.pdf

He is running for Congress to fight for the middle class and those working hard to join it.  Seth will work to help Rhode Islanders keep up with the cost of living by protecting Social Security and Medicare, lowering the price of prescription drugs, and returning big oil company profits back to consumers.  Seth will stand up for a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions and pass common-sense gun safety legislation. Seth has served as Rhode Island’s General Treasurer since 2015 where he has delivered results for the second congressional district by investing in education, job creation, and clean energy infrastructure. As Chair of the state’s school building task force, Seth led a statewide school construction initiative that created over 28,000 jobs and repaired or replaced over 200 schools like Garden City Elementary School in Cranston and the soon-to-be-completed combined elementary school in Johnston.  Seth also launched innovative clean energy financing programs that have helped cities and towns build out solar, wind and climate resiliency projects, saving taxpayers money and reducing fossil fuel emissions.  With help from the programs Seth created, the town of West Warwick hasn’t paid an electricity bill on any municipal building in five years.  Over the last eight years, Seth has used his office to fight for things that matter to Rhode Islanders.  He helped pass the Reproductive Privacy Act in 2019 that codified the protections of Roe v. Wade into state law, as well as common-sense gun measures like banning guns on school grounds and a red flag law to take guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.  As a new parent, Seth will fight to build a country where everyone has a chance to achieve the American Dream like his family did. Seth’s grandfathers were both sons of immigrants who grew up poor. Despite not having much, when they returned from  World War II they were able to find good, middle-class jobs – Grandpa Bob as a steelworker in Worcester and his Grandpa Louis as a bookkeeper at a fruit canning company in New York. With those jobs, they bought homes, started families, and put their kids through college. Their kids, Seth’s parents, both graduated from college and started a business together in Rhode Island, where Seth was raised and has served for the past eight years as General Treasurer. This was the American Dream that was so common a generation ago – the promise that with hard work and perseverance, each generation can leave a better life for their kids than they had for themselves. That American Dream of economic mobility has broken down for many families and was never afforded to others. Seth believes we can only restore the American Dream if we send representatives to Washington who will fight for working people and stand up to the extreme elements in Washington that put their own ambition ahead of doing what is right. Seth has spent his career fighting for working Rhode Islanders, and is ready to bring that fight to Washington.

Like most Rhode Islanders, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I came from humble beginnings. My mother showed my sister and me what a strong, independent woman could accomplish when she found herself single and divorced by the time I was five. Undeterred by her circumstances, she started and built a successful business, achieving the American Dream and providing a better life for her children. Growing up, she instilled in me the importance of hard work and fighting for what you believe in — values I cherish to this day. I was blessed to meet my husband, Jeff, here in Rhode Island, and we were engaged in Providence in 2008. Jeff, the son of a Holocaust survivor, trained at Brown University in surgery and started his practice at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. His focus was treating and operating on children with complex craniofacial anomalies and cleft lips and palates. Seeing first-hand the challenges these kids face, as well as the expenses incurred by their families, our non-profit foundation, Komedyplast, was started in Rhode Island in 2004. Komedyplast provides free surgery for children with craniofacial anomalies throughout Peru. While we had originally hoped to start our family in Providence, student loans, the financial crisis, and high taxes forced us to look for opportunities elsewhere. Over the last 14 years, we created a health care business, had three beautiful boys, and returned to Rhode Island to raise our family. Together, Jeff and I have worked hard, adapted to the challenges before us, and never gave up. While it wasn’t always easy, I learned some very important life lessons along the way. Many nights I would stay awake worrying about making payroll so my employees could pay their mortgages, rent, utilities, food, and healthcare. It is a heavy burden to bear, but my passion for solving problems, helping people, and my gratitude to my employees drove me to be able to provide for my team and build my business. I believe this experience of starting from nothing, building that business, and helping others achieve their own success makes me a different kind of leader — a leader that will bring these skills with me to the state capitol as we fight to better the lives of Rhode Islanders. Like most working folks in the Ocean State, I understand the value of a dollar and appreciate a hard-day’s work. I started working at a pizza shop when I was only 15. I have been a hostess, a waitress, a barista, and worked retail — working two jobs and still struggling to make it financially — an experience far too many Rhode Islanders still face today. As we take this journey, I will never forget my roots. And as a former Golden Gloves boxer, I am a fighter, and I will be the people of Rhode Island’s champion. My life has been dedicated to education and community service, and I will bring that same passion to Rhode Island. I will fight to ensure that parents can send their children to the best schools possible, I will fight to keep more money in Rhode Islander’s pockets by lowering their tax burden, I will fight for pro-job policies to spur economic growth, and most importantly, I will fight for the people of this great state. I look forward to the opportunity to hear your voices and your views throughout this campaign because, together, we will make Rhode Island the best possible place to live, work, and raise a family.
