BONUS: Patch of Heaven: On the Trail of the First Chocolate Grown in the Continental U.S.
In this special Stitcher Premium bonus episode, we travel to a patch of tropical forest just south of Miami that is home to the first commercial cacao grove in the mainland United States. Cacao only grows in a very narrow, hot, sunny band of the world, from about 20 degrees north to 20 degrees south of the Equator. Miami is at 27 degrees north. But, given Florida’s changing climate, the chocolate-loving horticulturalists at the Patch of Heaven sanctuary decided to give this new crop a try. So … would their experiment work? And, if so, what would the resulting chocolate taste like? Tune in this episode for this special bean-to-bar story—and to find out how you can get a taste of this unique chocolate.
