Can value investing be sustainable?
Value investing is an investment philosophy whereby the investor buys assets that they believe to be undervalued by the market and thus have the potential to generate returns. Over the last 12 months there has been a shift from growth to value: Surging inflation and commodity prices have been hugely beneficial for legacy companies in the oil and gas, and mining sectors as they have been able to take advantage of the global energy crisis and the switching on of demand post-Covid. An environment of rising interest rates is also helping value stocks to appear more valuable, as growth companies tend to have longer-term cash flow horizons; hence their valuations are affected more by rising rates. So, with the increasing focus on sustainability can one be sustainable and a value investor at the same time? Joining Ima Jackson-Obot, deputy features editor at FTAdviser, to discuss the topic are Roberta Barr, head of value team ESG - fund manager at Schroders, and Stuart Clark, WealthSelect portfolio manager at Quilter Investors. How to learn from Amazon's model
But what happens when the kingpin of big data and clever, tailored marketing to each of its consumers decides to take on financial services? The potential for Amazon to become a shop front for life insurance brokers or wealth managers has become clear in recent years. But while the regulatory niceties will need to be worked out, what do we make of the model that Amazon can offer in becoming a one-stop shop for clients? And what do we make of large entities in regulated financial services attempting to counter this potential threat by becoming all things to all people? Talking to FTAdviser editor Simoney Kyriakou on this podcast is Ian McKenna, founder of fintech consultancy F&TRC, and Hugo Bedford, chief executive of JM Finn. Hosted on Acast. Are annuities making a comeback?
In 2022 annuity rates have climbed by 40-50 per cent - which is a 14-year high- with these rates boosted by soaring long-term gilt yields.
