The podcast ecosphere has evolved dramatically over the past five years. Podcasting has moved out of its geeky ghetto into the cultural mainstream. In our season finale Martin and Lance are joined by Fiona Sturges of the FT, ‘Professor iPod’ Michael Bull, and FYEO producer Ella Gray Thomas to explore what the future holds for the medium. Editing
Today’s most celebrated podcast makers are highly creative editors and sound designers who communicate in bold ways. And the ease of podcast replaying, re-listening and back-scanning on the part of listeners has enabled much more subtle production techniques than in the past. In this episode we listen to some benchmark examples of podcast editing, Lance talks about sound on Blood Culture, and we hear from Brendan Baker, Ellen Horne, Ann Heppermann, and Jad Abumrad.   Written & presented by Martin Spinelli & Lance Dann Produced by Jack F Jewers & Ella Gray Thomas Sound by Andrew Duff Executive produced by Martin Spinelli   Interview contributors: Ellen Horne, Brendan Baker, Ann Heppermann, Jad Abumrad and Miranda Sawyer. Drama
Despite what some podcasters might say, audio drama is not a ‘new form’. It has a long history that can’t be swept aside. But how does the drama we listen to through podcasts do things differently? In this episode we’ll attempt to define ‘podcast drama’ as a new genre and explore what the future holds for it.  We also hear thoughts from The Truth’s Jonathan Mitchell and We’re Alive’s KC Wayland.   Written & presented by Lance Dann & Martin Spinelli Produced by Ella Gray Thomas & Jack F Jewers Sound by Andrew Duff Executive produced by Martin Spinelli   Interview contributors: KC Wayland and Jonathan Mitchell  Clips featured: We’re Alive (‘Chapter 1: It Begins’), Blood Culture (‘Episode 1 Part 1’)   For Your Ears Only was produced with the support of Arts Council England, Bloomsbury Academic, the University of Sussex, Brighton University, and the British Academy.   Website: www.earsonlypodcast.com Twitter: @earsonlypodcast Instagram: @earsonlypodcast

Authenticity
Perhaps the most significant distinctive characteristic of many of our most successful podcasts is their “authentic” feel and sound.  Typically, podcasts are “independent,” produced without the initial support of institutions with their producers following their passions rather than trying to make money. Ironically, this is perhaps the surest route in podcasting to financial independence.  In this episode we explore authenticity within the “freemium economy” of most of the podcasting world, with contributions from Richard Herring, Scroobius Pip and the team from My Dad Wrote A Porno. Written & presented by Lance Dann & Martin Spinelli Produced by Jack F Jewers & Ella Gray Thomas Sound by Andrew Duff Executive produced by Martin Spinelli   Interview contributors: Richard Herring, Scroobius Pip, Jad Abumrad, Helen Zaltzman, Alice Levine, Jamie Morton, James Cooper. Clips featured: Me1 vs Me2 Snooker with Richard Herring (‘Frame 77’), Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast (‘RHLSTP 117 – Armando Iannucci’), Radiolab (‘From Tree to Shining Tree’), Adam Buxton (‘Leesa Mattress 1’)   For Your Ears Only was produced with the support of Arts Council England, Bloomsbury Academic, the University of Sussex, Brighton University, and the British Academy.   Website: www.earsonlypodcast.com Twitter: @earsonlypodcast Instagram: @earsonlypodcast

Audience
Today’s podcasters have transformed the passivity of listening into the engagement of fandom. With live events, social media chatter, T-shirt sales, and fan art, there is now an active exchange of ideas between audio producers and audiences. In this episode we look into how audiences engage with podcasts differently and hear thoughts from KC Wayland, Helen Zaltzman, Joseph Fink, and Jeffrey Cranor. Written & presented by Lance Dann & Martin Spinelli Produced by Ella Gray Thomas & Jack F Jewers Sound by Andrew Duff Voice acting by Rachael Sparkes & Eoin McKenna Executive produced by Martin Spinelli   Interview contributors: Alan Hall, Jad Abumrad, KC Wayland, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, and Helen Zaltzman. Narrative
Our cultural obsession with well-crafted audio stories has been steadily increasing since the birth of podcasting. Will we ever lose the thrill of a good narrative or tire of familiar formulas?  Most of today’s best podcasters don’t think so. In this episode we’ll unpick arcs, reflect on moments of reflection and hear ideas on ‘story’ from Ann Heppermann, Ellen Horne and Jad Abumrad.   Written & presented by Martin Spinelli & Lance Dann Produced by Ella Gray Thomas & Jack F Jewers Sound by Andrew Duff Additional music by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under creative commons.
