He remains involved with the program as its head coach emeritus.Marv also had a long, successful coaching tenure with the U.S. National Team. The American squad maintained a No. 1 world ranking during his time as coach in the 1980s and the team won every major international tournament: the 1985 World Cup, the 1986 World Championships, the 1987 Pan American Games and, most importantly, the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.Since then, he has been an assistant coach for the men’s team at the 2000 Olympics and a consultant coach at the 1996, 2004 and 2008 Olympics. In 2012, Marv served as a consultant coach in London for the silver-medal winning women’s squad and most recently, in 2016, he was a scouting coach for the women’s team, helping the team to a bronze-medal finish. We had the pleasure of rooming together during those 2016 Olympic games in Rio and I’m hoping this conversation gives you the opportunity to get to know Marv the way I got to know him then.In this conversation, we discuss what great leadership looks like and what separates the outliers from the rest of the pack. -----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. Dr. Ethan Kross on How to Harness the Voice in Your Head
This week’s conversation is with Dr. Ethan Kross, one of the world’s leading experts on controlling the conscious mind. After graduating magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, Ethan earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from Columbia University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in social-affective neuroscience to learn about the neural systems that support self-control. He moved to the University of Michigan in 2008, where he founded the Emotion & Self Control Laboratory. As an award-winning professor in the University of Michigan’s top-ranked Psychology Department and its Ross School of Business, Ethan studies how the conversations people have with themselves impact their health, performance, decisions, and relationships. And Ethan just published his first book, Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It.I’d be surprised if anyone listening hasn’t experienced what Ethan describes as “Chatter.”That process where you have a thought such as, “Why did I screw up this shot or presentation at work?” But rather than just identify how to fix it and move on, you keep getting stuck. Our ability to reflect on what we’re doing, learn from our experiences and optimize how we navigate the world is an incredibly powerful tool, but that introspective capacity can also steer us off course.Ruminating and getting stuck in this cycle of negative thinking can make life miserable, so in this conversation, we discuss what to do when you find yourself stuck in that cycle.-----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. Max Lugavere on Brain Health and Longevity
This week’s conversation is with Max Lugavere, a filmmaker, health and science journalist and author of the The Genius Life and the New York Times best-seller Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life.Max appears regularly on the Dr. Oz Show, the Rachael Ray Show, and The Doctors. After his mother was diagnosed with a mysterious form of dementia, Max put his successful media career on hold to learn everything he could about brain health and performance. For the better half of a decade, he consumed the most up-to-date scientific research, talked to dozens of leading scientists and clinicians around the world, and visited the country’s best neurology departments—all in the hopes of understanding his mother’s condition. Sometimes with the non-traditional route of education, I have my doubts, as there's something to be said about formal training. But Max’s purpose is clear – he knows what he’s talking about and offers some very practical strategies that you can begin implementing today. We discuss how critical diet is for both brain health and longevity – Max shares his nutritional recommendations and some tips for preparing healthy meals regularly. -----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. Morgan Housel on The Psychology of Money
This week’s conversation is with Morgan Housel, a partner at The Collaborative Fund and a former columnist at The Motley Fool and The Wall Street Journal. He is a two-time winner of the Best in Business Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, winner of the New York Times Sidney Award, and a two-time finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.Morgan recently published a book titled, The Psychology of Money, and it’s the impetus for why I wanted to talk to him.If you’ve listened to this podcast for a while, you know I live by this stance: having a philosophy for your life is imperative...What I hope you take from this conversation is that the same can be said for how you think about money. There isn’t simply one "right" way to manage your money, but it should align with the greater values you live by.At one point in our conversation, Morgan shares that he doesn’t have a mortgage on his house, that he owns it outright.I was a bit stumped at first because it would appear, especially in our current climate with how low interest rates are, that this is foolish.Isn’t there a huge opportunity cost to that? But Morgan is clear on his principles, what makes him feel secure, and what’s “enough” for him... not having to think about a mortgage is something that’s important to him.So this conversation isn’t focused so much on what to do with your money, but the importance of having clarity on the reasons why you choose to do, what you do, with it. -----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. Henry Fraser on Acceptance, Resiliency, and Gratitude
This week’s conversation is with Henry Fraser, a talented artist, who paints stunning landscapes, animals, portraits, and more. There’s one caveat -- he draws using his mouth, as an accident years ago left him paralysed from the neck down.So that would beg the question, how did he learn to paint? He began by using a stylus on his iPad, which he held using his mouth to draw.He then taught himself to use a pencil, and then paint, by fixing the utensils required a stick attached to his mouth.Henry is also an author – he wrote The Little Big Things, which won Non Fiction Book Of The Year by WHSmith.Losing your ability to move from the shoulders down at age 17 – that’s up there with the most difficult circumstances I can imagine someone having to deal with.So with that context, I think you can get an idea of why I wanted to speak with Henry. This conversation is about acceptance, resiliency, and gratitude. It’s about making the best of a situation, no matter how bad things seem on the surface.-----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support.
