Jon Glassberg – Ep. 13
Jon Glassberg – Ep. 13 Jon Glassberg initially started climbing on the weekends as a kid near his hometown of Charlottesville, VA. After quickly developing a passion for the sport, Jon could be found at the crag almost every weekend. With his growing skill, he made his way into competition climbing where he began to make a name for himself. Stong performances in competition and ticking off difficult outdoor routes soon caught the attention of people and brands in the climbing industry. Before long Jon became a professional climber with sponsorships from top brands. For many years this climbing was his life. He was living the life that many climbers dream of, getting paid and sponsored to travel around the world knocking of climbs and boulders that ranged all the way up to V14 and 5.14. This all shifted when Jon decided to change his focus from climbing to film. Instead of being the one in the spotlight, Jon wanted to use his unique perspective and abilities to document the climbing world with his camera. Thus Louder Than 11 was born. Since it’s founding Jon has captured hundreds of hours of footage and thousands of photos documenting some of the greatest climbers of our time including Emily Harrington, Ethan Pringle, Brooke Raboutou, Kyra Condie, and so many more. What is truly great about Jon’s work though is not necessarily who he is working with, but how he builds a visual story. His films aren’t just hard climbs and huge whips, they are about overcoming insane odds and people pushing to the brink. The Links Find Your OM Instagram – @findyourom.officialWebsite – www.findyourom.net Jon’s Links Jon Glassberg – @jonglassbergLouder Than 11 – @louderthan11 | https://lt11.com/ The Mentions Mountain Hardwear – @mountainhardwear | mountainhardwear.comEmily Harrington – @emilyaharrington | Emily Harrington sends Golden GateAlex Puccio – @alex_puccio89Brooke Raboutou – @brookeclimbs | L’ascensionUSA Climbing – @usaclimbing | usaclimbing.orgTim Emmet – @timemmettKyra Condie – @kyra_condie Click here to listen to our previous interview with Julian Carr! Julian Carr – Ep. 12
Julian Carr – Ep. 12 Julian Carr didn’t try skiing until he was in the 8th grade, but by the end of his second day he was hooked. From that point on, Julian kept skiing for fun all the way through to college where he began to seriously consider making a career out of his passion. It didn’t take long from that moment that Julian was making a name for himself in the realm of professional skiing. Before long Julian’s name and photo could be found in many of the top ski magazines and films. This fame only grew as Julian became widely known for his willingness to huck cliffs. Most notably his world record front flip off a 210 foot cliff while skiing in Switzerland.  Julian has never been just a skier though, along with his passion for shredding down a mountain, he is also quite the businessman. During college, as he worked on his ski career, he also started his first company, Discrete Clothing. This venture has not only been a successful business for 10+ years, but helped prepare Julian to found his second venture, The Cirque Series. The series, which has quickly become the premier mountain running series in the USA, takes place at 6 world-famous ski-resorts around the US. For each race, participants push themselves up and down the mountain as quickly as they in the spirit of sport and so they can party with everyone at the finish line. But, unlike his races which have a clear end, there doesn’t seem to be an end to what Julian Carr can do when he puts his mind to it. So make sure to keep an eye out for his next big idea! Rafael Pease – Ep. 11
Rafael Pease – Ep. 11 Rafael Pease was born in Paris, France, but has lived most of his life traveling around the world. After becoming burnt out on the competitive nature of team sports as a kid, Rafael found his true passion at the age of 17… snowboarding. Since that moment, Rafael has not taken his foot off the gas. He has spent years chasing snow back and forth between the US and Chile, along with a few trips to other parts of the globe including Japan and Kyrgyzstan. During this period, Rafael also worked to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science from the University of Colorado Boulder. Through this program, combined with the time he spent adventuring in the mountains, Rafael decided that he wanted to make an impact on the world through environmental activism. While there are many ways to go about this, Rafael decided to create the Connections Movement, a production collective exploring the connection we as humans hold with the environment through various distinct lifestyles, cultures, and geographical locations.  His first big film was called Yugen, a 3-year borderless mountain-based documentary film that explores the connection we as mountaineers and environmentalists share with the natural world. Today Rafael is working on putting out his next set of films, most notably, Tupungato, a Land Rights film that will showcase the creation of a national park through his perspective as a snowboard mountaineer and environmental activist. With a long future ahead of him, there is no doubt that Rafael will continue to make an impact on the world for many years to come. Len Necefer – Ep. 10
Len Necefer – Episode 10 Len Necefer grew up seeing first hand many of the struggles that indigenous people face each day in our current world, from poor working conditions to homes without running water, to a lack of opportunities in Native communities. These experiences placed Len on a path to help improve everyday life for indigenous people. At first, Len worked toward this goal through his work at the Department of Energy’s Office of Indian Energy Policy supporting tribes realize their energy futures through research and grant-making, but switched his path when the protection of  Bear’s Ears National Monument was threatened.  After hearing the news about Bear’s Ears, Len quit his job and started Natives Outdoors as a social media project aimed at highlighting the stories and photos of Native people in outdoor recreation. Since its founding, Natives Outdoors has expanded from a social media project to a company that provides advisory and consulting services to the outdoor industry on topics within the intersection of tribes, public lands, and outdoor recreation. Through Natives Outdoors and his ongoing advocacy for Native communities, Len has and continues to make meaningful impacts to the world! Lael Wilcox – Ep. 9
Lael Wilcox – Episode 9 Lael Wilcox has never owned a car but instead has chosen to ride bikes as her preferred mode of transportation. This decision has taken her around the world and led her to become one of the most well-known bikepackers and endurance cyclists today. She got her start in biking when she began to commute to work by bike. Not long after starting this habit she tried her first long-distance ride, which then led to another, and another, and another, and so on, until she began riding more miles per year than most Americans drive. Needless to say, Lael had found her passion.  Since discovering her love for biking Lael has raced in events like the Silk Road Mountain Race, established the Baja Divide Bikepacking Route, created a program called Anchorage Grit that helps empower young girls through biking, and has inspired many people around the world to hop on their bikes and explore the world!  The Links Find Your OM Instagram – @findyourom.official Facebook – @findyourom.official Website – www.findyourom.net Lael’s Links Lael’s Instagram – @laelwilcox Lael’s Website – laelwilcox.com The Mentions I Just Want to Ride – Film Screenings Rugile “Rue” Kaladyte – @rugilekaladyte | rugilekaladyte.com Anchorage GRIT – anchoragegrit.wordpress.com Silk Road Mountain Race – silkroadmountainrace.cc Revelate Designs – @revelatedesigns | revelatedesigns.com Pearl Izumi – @pearlizumiofficial | pearlizumi.com Specialized – @iamspecialized | specialized.com The Bicycle Shop Anchorage – bikeshopak.com Click here to listen to our previous interview with adventure photographer Jim Harris! Jim Harris – Ep. 8
Jim Harris – Episode 8 Each year college graduates are faced with the same question, “Where do I go from here?” Often times their degree pushes them to look for a job in their field of study, or they could decide to further their education in grad school. For Jim Harris, he decided to go with option number three and take the year off to live the ski bum lifestyle. One thing led to another until soon enough, Jim was working as an outdoor educator, teaching mountaineering courses with Outward Bound and Alaska Mountain Guides. This was Jim’s life until he posted some photos online from a month long trip he went on in Wrangle St. Elias Park in Alaska. The photos went viral and , launched him into a career as an adventure photographer. With continual success, his trips got more exotic and his client list grew to include National Geographic, Camp 4 Collective, and dozens of magazines and outdoor brands. Life was pretty sweet for Jim, until he found himself laying in a hospital bed in Punta Arenas Chile. In the fall of 2014, Harris traveled to Chile for an expedition he and frequent travel partner Forrest McCarthy had dreamed up. The idea was to ski and packraft 350 miles down the length of the Patagonian Ice Cap. Practicing with a snow kite just before their departure, Harris fractured 9 vertebra and was paralyzed from sternum down. It was an abrupt end not just to his photo and video livelihood, but to his mobility in the mountains too. Since his accident, Jim has made a miraculous recovery and now has gained the ability to walk, ski, and bike once again. Listen in to my discussion with Jim to find out more about his journey so far! Owen Braley – Ep. 6
Owen Braley – Episode 6 For episode 6 of Find Your OM, I sit down with… myself! With 5 episodes already done, this seemed like the perfect time to take a step back and properly introduce myself and tell you why I started Find Your OM. While I would love to say that I am some extraordinary adventurer or expert interviewer, I’m just not those things. Yes, I love to get outside and experience the outdoors in many different ways, and yes, I have a great time interviewing incredible individuals about how they have found their OM; however, I am no pro. I am just a guy who has realized some of his passions and has started the journey to pursue them. I trip over words when I speak, I am not the best at planning ahead, I send emails with spelling errors, and don’t know everything about the outdoor industry, but I want to show people that you don’t have to be perfect to pursue your passions. The biggest key to the pursuit of your passions, no matter what they may be is taking action. Every action you take, even if they may seem incredibly small in the scope of things, all take you slightly closer to you reaching your goal or living your passion. There is a Japanese haiku that has helped me in my pursuit of my passions that roughly translates to’ “If all you do is think, the sun will set.” Since reading this haiku, I have had quite the shift in perspective. I have always been a dreamer, and continue to constantly come up with wild ideas, but for a large part of my life they were just that, ideas. I never acted on those ideas. That is until I read this haiku and realized that if you don’t act on things, life will pass you by. Now, whenever I have a big idea or get overwhelmed by all I have to learn or do in order to turn my passions/goals into reality, I take comfort in knowing that the only way I am going to get there is through action, big or small. Rob Lea – Ep. 5
Rob Lea – Episode 5 In 2012 Rob Lea was the Men’s 30-34 Age Group World Champion in the Half-Ironman triathlon. With this win, Rob began to seriously contemplate pursuing a professional career in triathlon’s. That is, until his he had some bad luck with an ankle injury that limited his ability to run. This was big moment for Rob as it was the moment he decided to not wallow in the face of injury, but instead see it as an opportunity. That opportunity came in the form of a new goal. This goal initially was to swim the English Channel, but while doing his research on what they call “the Everest of swimming,” he was inspired to also try and climb Mount Everest in the same year. If successful, Rob would be the first person to do both incredible feats within a single year. Even though this would be an amazing task to do both, Rob couldn’t forget his background in triathlon’s and thus a bike ride across the US was tacked on to this already hefty goal. Also he cut the timing down to six months to accomplish all three adventures, because why not? Kicking off his Ultimate World Triathlon in April of this year, he has now successfully climbed Everest and swam across the English channel. Leaving only his ride across America left. Oh and did I mention he somehow also found time to marry his now wife Caroline Gleich in that time? Yeah… I don’t know how he does it. Luckily I was able to catch Rob right before he kicked off the final leg of his Ultimate World Triathlon to discuss just what it is like to conquer the world’s biggest challenges! Andrew Fraser – Ep. 4
Andrew Fraser – Episode 4 An hour talking with Andrew Fraser just isn’t enough time to dive into all the incredible things he has experienced in his life. From being a camp counselor in Europe, to climbing the Matterhorn, to walking a puma through the jungles of South America, to learning to fly a wingsuit, it seems he has done it all. But in more recent years Andrew has traded in his life traveling the world for one rooted in his home state. Andrew now works as the Managing Director at Movement Climbing + Fitness in Denver, CO, where he teaches yoga and climbs often. When he isn’t working, Andrew is most likely scratching his adventure itch by either flying over various part of the Front Range in his wingsuit or in the mountains bagging yet another peak. I am very happy to have had the chance to sit down with Andrew and hope you find inspiration through listening to our conversation!
