Ep 168: Marcus Markou, the UK's true Indie Filmmaker
Marcus Markou – Writer/ Director/ Producer Marcus is an independent filmmaker, who successfully self-distributed his debut feature film, Papadopoulos and Sons (starring Stephen Dillane), which he wrote and directed, in 2013, by staging his own cinema release – achieving the second highest screen average of any movie in its opening weekend (only beaten by Oblivion with Tom Cruise) with a P&A budget of just £40k. He used social media and guerrilla tactics such as cold calling every Greek Orthodox priest to announce the movie’s release in the Sunday service before the opening weekend. The movie went on to be bought by Netflix, ARTE, the BBC and many worldwide territories. He has written two plays: Age-Sex-Location (Riverside Studios, 2004) and Ordinary Dreams (2009) and his short films Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times (2017) and Office Song (2019) have notched up over 100 festival screenings between them and over 20 award wins. In 2014 he was nominated by the London Critics Circle Awards for Breakthrough British Filmmaker. His latest feature film, The Wife and Her Househusband, is due for theatrical release in March 2023. Ep 166: Guerilla Filmmaker Jaron Lockridge
In 2001 at age 15 , Jaron Lockridge became interested in film while attending a high school drama class in his hometown of Bolivar, Tennessee. After performing in the school's Christmas play that winter, Jaron decided to write his first stageplay which is still currently being performed at his high school by theater students. In 2009, Jaron wrote, filmed and directed his first short film titled "Hard Man County" which was approximately 40 minutes long. The cast consisted of friends with no experience and was filmed using a Canon GL-1 he purchased from a pawn shop. Jaron had to place his dreams of pursuing film temporarily on hold due to personal issues, but his obsession with movies continued. In 2015, Jaron began production on a feature "Betray" and quickly casted the film with local talent. With a mere $1000 budget, Jaron rented camera equipment, bought props and rented a location to get his plan in motion. With only a 4 day window, Betray was completed and Jaron saw his dream of filmmaking move forward. Since creating his film production company, Misguided Perceptions Media Group in 2016, over 8 feature films, numerous short films and a two multi episode streaming series have been produced. A self proclaimed "Guerilla Filmmaker", Jaron considers making quality films with minimal resources his specialty. Ep 155: "Aunt Vivian" from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" - Daphne Maxwell Reid
Everyone remembers Daphne Maxwell Reid as an iconic TV mom of the 1990s, from her three seasons as Aunt Vivian on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air." And Daphne couldn't be more excited when the cast of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" reunited 30 years later for an unscripted reunion special that aired on HBO Max last November. These days Reid is a Renaissance woman, respected artist and designer, and education activist. Working from her home in Virginia, and still happily married to pioneering television actor/producer/writer/director Tim Reid ("WKRP in Cincinnati," "Frank's Place," "Sister, Sister"), Daphne Maxwell Reid is living proof that a passion for creativity and a dedication to hard work can ensure a lifetime's worth of success. Breaking new barriers is nothing new to Reid, who decades ago became the first African-American homecoming queen at Northwestern University and shortly thereafter one of the first African-American women to appear on the cover of Glamour magazine. But many fans of her modeling and acting career probably don't know that Reid is a lifelong shutterbug, a hobby passed down by her father that has now become a focal point of her career. With five books and 5 annual calendars already published, Reid specializes in fine art photography that features doors and doorways from around the world, including Cuba, Venice, France, China, Germany, and Belgium. Now she's added to her publishing resume with her first cookbook, "Grace + Soul & Motherwit," which offers her favorite recipes spiced with personal memories and reflections from her life and travels. Reid has also been a seamstress for much of her life, creating many of her own outfits and costumes as a young actress and model, and has now developed those skills into an exclusive, custom clothing line called Daphne Style, making Chinese silk brocade jackets that are wearable works of art. She also keeps busy as a spokesperson for Virginia State University, a historically black college/university (HBCU), doing outreach, public relations, and speaking engagements that allow her to preach the importance of education and career prep for students of color. A thoughtful, inspiring, and fascinating professional with over five decades of experience, Daphne Maxwell Reid continues to demonstrate that mastering a new skill is always possible for an artist with a generous spirit and self-determination. In her own words "Hi! I'm Suzanne. I'm an actress and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. Or maybe in the NBC TV show Blindspot, or the films Ricki and the Flash (dir. by Jonathan Demme), and Obvious Child (dir. by Gillian Robespierre). Recently, I starred in the hit web series, I AM YOU, which has nearly a million views and was produced by Rizzle Studios. I was honored with a best actress award for my work on the show by The International Academy of Web Television. A Kentucky native, I received my BA in Theatre from Davidson College in North Carolina. I've spent time studying abroad with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the British American Drama Academy in London. Ep 153: A 'Karen' flees the city after going viral for a racist incident! Who's Afraid?
Who's Afraid follows this phenomenon to a cathartic yet heart-pumping conclusion as it answers the question: what would happen if someone had to face a life-or-death situation as a result of jeopardizing someone else's life out of sheer racism? Our main character, Whitney King, commits such an act of racism then flees the city to forget and reset. Unfortunately for her, she runs from one problem and into another: a charming group of locals who require human flesh for their holiday feast. As a justice narrative, and given how difficult it remains for marginalized storytellers to make their visions a reality, Who's Afraid represented an opportunity for co-producer/star Siobhan Lee and me to bet on ourselves. Refusing to live haunted by 'what if's and 'if only's, we used our day-job savings to take the bold step of financing the production phase of the film. Ep 150: Before Sunrise with Kim Krizan
An American writer and actress best known for originating the story and characters in the "Before Sunrise" trilogy with her writing on Before Sunrise 1995 and Before Sunset 2004 for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a Writers Guild Award. The trilogy is based on characters she created with Richard Linklater. Before Sunrise is a 1995 romantic drama film directed by Richard Linklater and co-written by Linklater and Kim Krizan. The first installment in the Before trilogy, it follows Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) as they meet on a Eurail train and disembark in Vienna to spend the night together. Inspired by personal experiences, Linklater collaborated with Krizan, who previously appeared in his films Slacker (1991) and Dazed and Confused (1993), to develop the screenplay. Casting was extensive; it took nine months for Hawke and Delpy to be cast, with the pair also contributing uncredited rewrites. Principal photography took place entirely in Vienna. Their contrasting ideas and perspectives on life and love are detailed, with Jesse, a romantic disguised as a cynic, and Céline seemingly a romantic. Before Sunrise also explores time and self-discovery. Before Sunrise premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 1995, and was theatrically released eight days later. Krizan currently resides in Los Angeles, where she writes and teaches writing courses, most notably at UCLA. In the fall of 2021, she launched a video based writing class on Patreon After Procter moved to Los Angeles, her father provided the funds for acting school for two years. Before even graduating, she had already landed a number of small roles in films such as Cameron Crowe's sports romantic comedy-drama Jerry Maguire (1996) and co-starred with David Schwimmer and Chris Cooper in the TV movie Breast Men (1997). In 1996, Procter guest-starred in the ABC superhero drama Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, where she played Lana Lang. She briefly appeared in the TV movie The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! (1997) as Mavis. She also appeared in the drama Body Shots (1999) as Whitney Bryant. In 1995, Procter appeared in the NBC sitcom Friends in the second episode of the second season titled "The One with the Breast Milk", where she played Annabel, a brief love interest of Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc). From 2000 to 2002 and again in 2006, Procter had a recurring role in the NBC political drama The West Wing where she played Associate White House Counsel Ainsley Hayes.
