Two things happen: We allow other people to use their strengths to complete the project, the task, or the assignment that God has given so we can work together, and we also learn to rely on the Lord in our weaknesses, his strength is made known …“ –Connie Albers Connect with Connie and learn more about how there’s freedom in the pivot–changing direction to follow God’s plan … You can connect with Connie at conniealbers.com your one-stop-shop to check out her books, podcast, speaking info, resources, and social media links. Doris Swift: How to Walk in Your Calling While Your Heart is Still Mending
Have you felt it? That urge to plunge head-first into something bigger than yourself–to be used by God as a beacon of hope in the lives of others? But there’s that one thing –that hurt, pain, betrayal, loss, whatever-it-is that binds you up and holds you back. So how do we walk in our calling while our hearts are still mending? Your heart needs the Healer to mend the shattered shards as only He can. And even though you know that He can you wait because surely, a broken heart cannot be of service to anyone, right? The truth is… God’s Call on Your Life Happens in all Seasons Joseph Discovered How A Calling Happens in All Seasons–Even the Bad Ones Joseph understood this broken heart thing well. He was the most-loved favorite son–and his brothers knew it. A surefire recipe for a family feud. The brothers were further irked by Joseph’s crazy dreams of their sheaves of grain bowing to his, and his being center-stage in a celestial worship service of sorts. Actually irked isn’t the biblical word–hate is. And as we know, those dreams weren’t crazy at all–they were prophetic. Sometimes Our Journey Takes Unpleasant Turns Joseph’s dad sent him on a mission to check on his brothers and the flocks they were tending. But what happens next is often glossed over in light of the big picture outcome and a colorful coat. You may have first heard the story as a child in Sunday School. As an SS teacher, I’ve stood in front of countless adorable wiggling bodies and wandering eyeballs, trying to cram the story in between the I-miss-my-mom crocodile tears and, “When is it snack time, Mrs. Doris?” You may have taught this lesson to wiggly littles, too. Did your Road-Runner version sound like mine? “…then Joseph’s dad told him to look for his brothers and the flocks to see if they were all okay and Joseph went and when he was wondering the field looking for them a man asked him what he was looking for and Joseph said, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are…” And the man told him where the brothers went so Joseph continued looking for his brothers and the brothers saw him coming and plotted to kill him and then Reuben said let’s not kill him but just throw him into the cistern and when Joseph reached them they stripped him of his coat of many colors, another reminder to them that their dad loved him best (which will be our art project after the story), and they were so jealous, and they threw him into the cistern and then they sat down to eat and then they saw these Ishmaelites so then they sold Joseph into slavery and then…” Maybe it wasn’t quite that rambly, and I probably took a breath somewhere in there, but we tell Bible stories so matter-of-factly and in a rush sometimes, don’t we? And I can’t blame wiggly little people for my rush to the end. I think we all want to jump right to the good part–the part where Joseph’s brothers show up and find out Joseph’s calling by God is the reason they aren’t going to starve to death. The part when we see the goodness of the Lord, and how Joseph fulfilled his calling while his heart was still broken. The part when they finally get those crazy dreams. But today, that glossed-over part of the story made me cry. When Joseph didn’t find his brothers and the flocks where they were supposed to be, he still kept looking for them. Isn’t That So Like Our Jesus? Isn’t that so like our Jesus? Even when we aren’t where we are supposed to be and even when we probably don’t deserve to be found, he pursues us anyway. Even though some may reject Him, He still loves unconditionally. And we can’t point fingers and say we would never do that because truth is, we have. We have chosen other things over our first love. Probably not intentionally, but we most definitely have. But the Lord is gracious and patient, slow to anger and quick to love. Even when we break His heart. God Redeems Unpleasant Journeys for Good When his brothers stripped Joseph of his beloved coat of many colors, their envious fingerprints all over it, did it break Joseph’s heart? I’m sure it must have. And when he heard his brothers selling him off like used furniture, did it break Joseph’s heart? I’m sure it must have. What wondrous things God does through those who are willing. And He even uses those who hurt us in ways we cannot understand. “The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,  Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.” Genesis 39:2-4 Even after being accused by Potipher’s wife of things he did not do, and even after an innocent Joseph was thrown into prison–the Lord was still with him as He walked Joseph through his calling: ” Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.  So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.” Genesis 39:20-23 What Unconditional Love Looks Like “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Genesis 50:20-21 NASB God gave Joseph power and favor after a rough road of betrayal and false accusations. Even while Joseph was serving in high places, I imagine his heart still hurt from betrayal and the loss of his own family. Even when Joseph was walking around with a broken heart, he was walking with God in his calling. God was raising this man Joseph up and He was mending Joseph’s heart. And God restores Joseph’s family–he gets them back. But not everybody’s story ends this way, at least not their earthly stories. Though not every earthly story ends as we would choose, it really isn’t the end, is it? What we may see as an ending is really a new beginning.CLICK TO TWEET We can be used by God even when we walk through loss, pain, illness–a broken heart. God is mending us as we walk in faith and seek His face. God is binding our wounds with heavenly threads of hope, grace, peace, and mercy. And heavenly places are not affected by earthly destruction. A blessed assurance that our real home is safe and sound and untouched by human pain. Hardship does not need to hinder relationship, discipleship, or stewardship. Our spiritual gifts and God-given talents are never devalued by life’s circumstances or any less effective when a broken heart is mending. So how do we walk in our calling while our hearts are still mending? We guard our relationship with Jesus We surround ourselves with godly friends We live a life of integrity even if it means taking a harder road We trust God with our whole hearts–even when they’re broken We walk by faith and not by sight We wait patiently for God’s instruction with every step we take We believe God’s inspired Word is true–and true for us personally We remember to give ourselves grace and allow the Spirit to lead us in what we say, what we do, and where we go Our Lord who intricately embroidered our very being can delicately restore that which is broken; He is the God of restoration and nothing is too hard for Him. We can show unconditional love to others because He first loved us. Tell others about how to walk in your calling while your heart is still mending and … Memorize this verse and share it with someone this week: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 May your light shine brightly as you share the love of Christ with those He places on your path this week. When our paths intersect, healing begins. Love & Peace to you in Jesus! Coming up on Fierce Calling … My guests and I talk about anxiety, parenting, identity, overall health, relationships, and more. Doris Swift: What is The Difference Between Peace and Complacency?
Have you ever thought about it? What is the difference between peace and complacency? What about comfort vs. comfortable? We all want peace, don’t we? But it got me thinking about how easily complacency can disguise itself as peace. There’s something I used to pray about continually. Something important. I don’t worry about it and I feel at peace about it, but then it struck me. Although I’ve surrendered it to God, I’ve also stopped praying about it. Perhaps rather than having true peace, I’ve become complacent. Maybe I’ve become satisfied with things as they are and not as they could be. How many times have we heard someone say, “I’m good.” And how many times have we said it, too? And we’ve all heard the phrase, “It’s all good.” So is it? Or have we excepted things as they are, and that’s it? Good is good. God is good. I’m not dissing good. As long as it doesn’t mean we’re settling. That we’ve quit doing what we’ve been called to do. As long as hat we’ve quit praying for that thing, or that person, or that people. That we’ve just plain given it up. Retired from the vibrant life we’ve been created for to settle for just existing. So What is the Difference Between Peace and Complacency? Here’s the definition of complacency straight from Merriam-Webster: Complacency – a feeling of being satisfied with how things are and not wanting to try to make them better : a complacent feeling or condition Now here’s the definition of peace also from Merriam-Webster: Peace – freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions: harmony in personal relations Side by side, which would you choose? Check this out: You women who are so complacent, rise up and listen to me;you daughters who feel secure, hear what I have to say!In little more than a year you who feel secure will tremble;the grape harvest will fail, and the harvest of fruit will not come. Isaiah 32:9-10 (NIV) Now this: And the work of righteousness will be peace,And the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. Isaiah 32:17 (NASB) When we become complacent, we’re probably good when things are good. But what happens when the trials come? If we stray from our firm foundation, we’ll crumble like a cookie. Here are a few dangers of complacency: It stunts our spiritual growth. It blurs the lines between comfortable and comfort. It causes us to settle for less than God’s best. It keeps us stuck when we need to move forward. It makes us lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. It tempts us to withdraw-to become isolated. It will distance us from God. Are we experiencing the comfort of true peace or settling for the comfortable of complacency? Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.   John 14:27 NASB I didn’t see the words PEACE or FREEDOM in the definition of complacency, did you? Of course, Jesus’ peace is supernatural. You won’t find that definition in Merriam-Webster. That’s why God says it’s a peace that surpasses all understanding. We can have it even when it doesn’t make sense. Stay in prayer. Without ceasing. Which means don’t give up. Stay close to the sisterhood-Isolation is a dangerous place. Don’t go there. Stay alert because the enemy loves when we’re distracted. The world needs to know that true peace is found in Jesus. Is there something you’ve been praying about for a very long time? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you ever become complacent? Blessings,

Michelle Mercer: A Powerful & Personal Encounter with Jesus–The Ultimate Love Story
If you’ve ever asked questions like, does God really see me? Would Jesus leave the 99 to go after the 1 if that 1 was me? This episode answers those questions in a tangible way. The biblical answers to those questions are yes and yes–but what does it look like in real life? Born and raised Mormon, my friend, Michelle Mercer, had never experienced anything beyond religion. She shares a powerful & personal encounter with Jesus–the ultimate love story. Jesus undeniably pursued her when He wasn’t even on her radar. Michelle and her husband, Michael, were successful by the world’s standards. They earned top positions and seemingly had it all. But their marriage was struggling, and something important was missing from their lives, or should I say someone. They didn’t know Jesus and really didn’t care to–yet family members never gave up on them, and neither did Jesus. When I heard Michelle’s story in its entirety, I knew I needed to share it on Fierce Calling, and Michelle wholeheartedly agreed to allow me to. I will have her on again in the future to talk about the many missions and ministries she’s been a part of. We’ll talk about life as an RN, extensive missions in other countries, and Days for Girls–a ministry providing menstrual supplies to girls locally and around the world. But today, we hear Michelle’s powerful story of love, redemption, and transformation. Today we hear about how she met Jesus in a personal and powerful way. This format sounds like a TED talk, professional, concise, and humorous–but it’s a God talk, and no TED talk compares to that. I know what Michelle shares will encourage, inspire, and bring you fresh hope. So listen to this powerful testimony from Michelle Mercer. Scripture Verses Mentioned in A Personal & Powerful Encounter with Jesus–The Ultimate Love Story “Then you will desecrate your idols overlaid with silver and your images covered with gold; you will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and say to them, ‘Away with you!'” Isaiah 30:22 (NIV) “ For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:10 (NIV) Michelle Mercer Michelle Mercer is a retired Registered Nurse, wife, and is active in missions. She and her husband, Michael, have served in numerous missional efforts, including a child sponsorship program in Honduras. Michelle and her team of women provide Days for Girls kits containing menstrual supplies and education to young girls and women who lack basic provisions for their monthly periods. The Days for Girls outreach has included Lebanon, Sudan, and Honduras, as well as local agencies and organizations.  After spending the majority of her career in Healthcare leadership, God gifted Michelle with many skills and opportunities, but it wasn’t until she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior that He completely transformed her and changed her life forever.  Love Fierce Calling? To the Girl with Passion, Compassion, & Conviction–It’s Go Time
Do you feel a call on your heart in this new year? To the girl with passion, compassion, & conviction–it’s go time. It’s time to walk in the fierce calling God sets before you. I’d love to have coffee with Martha & Mary. Besides hearing about their fascinating conversations with Jesus, there’s something I’d like to ask them … Concerned for their brother’s life, Martha & Mary sent word to Jesus, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” because surely Jesus would come and Lazarus would be healed. Surely. But things don’t always happen as we believe they should–and God’s love is magnified in more extraordinary ways than we can fathom. Jesus purposefully delays His arrival–because sometimes what doesn’t make sense in temporal ways makes sense in eternal ways. When Jesus finally makes His way to the outskirts of Bethany, Martha hears He is near. She slips out of her home, where many had gathered to comfort the sisters, and went out to meet Him. Martha says, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:21). How often do we tell the Lord what He already knows? But we should tell Him because although He knows our hearts, He wants to hear our hurts straight from our own lips. That Whole “Martha/Mary” Thing … It’s interesting to me that Martha was the one who left her guests to meet Jesus. We’ve met Martha & Mary before–in Luke 10. We learned Martha busied herself with hospitality while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. This time, it was Martha who drew near. In the Luke 10 account and in Martha’s defense, she was fulfilling the cultural expectations of Jewish customs. It was expected that women should tend to domestic responsibilities. Mary ignores this custom by sitting at Jesus’ feet, and Jesus throws out customs and expectations to teach us that sitting at His feet is better than meal prep–or anything else. Of course, I’d probably dash to the kitchen to prepare lasagne if He showed up at my house, and hospitality is a beautiful thing, but it’s just not the best thing. Spending time with Jesus is. Why bake bread when you have the Bread of Life sitting in your living room? Back to the Story–Jesus Calls for Mary Perhaps Mary was too bereaved to leave the house. Perhaps Mary was too hurt that Jesus did not arrive sooner. We don’t know her thoughts, but we do know one of the sisters had to stay behind. In Jewish custom, the bereaved were to stay at home for a week after a loved one’s passing. When Jesus calls for Mary, Martha journeys home to bring her sister back to Jesus. That warms my heart like melted chocolate on a S‘mores because Jesus calls for us too–by name. We are called to lay down what is customary to dwell in the midst of our Savior. The Exact Same Words Mary hurries to meet Jesus at that same spot and says the exact same words Martha said: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” The sisters knew… They knew Jesus could have healed Lazarus. It was no coincidence Martha and Mary said the exact same thing to Jesus and perhaps had the exact same thought… Jesus, you’re too late. Where were you? But Jesus is never too late. He calls for the stone to be taken away and then calls Lazarus forth–and out walks a guy who’s been dead in a tomb for four days. Martha & Mary may have known Jesus raised others from the dead, and Jesus had already said to Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life…,” but it’s not revealed whether the sisters had hoped for such an event. Except maybe for that one thing Martha said to Jesus during their conversation before Mary joined them … “But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” Then Jesus said to her …  Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” John 11:22-27 That might have revealed a hint of hope, but still, four days dead in a tomb is a long time. What would I ask Mary & Martha? I’d ask them this: “What was it like when Jesus requested the stone be taken away from that tomb? When did it sink in that Jesus wasn’t too late? That a miracle was about to take place? How often do we trust our feelings over truth? How often do we believe the lie that waiting in the quiet means God is unaware of our circumstances? One day we have this lush, flourishing faith–and the next our fears shear blooming faith back down to a seedling. Flesh is so annoying. But we need not fear because God exceeds the expectations of our mustard seed faith every time. In this passage, Jesus wept. He was deeply moved by their grief. He knew the outcome, but still, He wept. His compassions never fail and in the midst of our mess is His loving restoration.Jesus meets us in our need and loves us from mess to restoration.CLICK TO TWEET What if We Believed in Fierce Possibilities? It’s never going to happen, it’s too hard, it’s impossible … What if we saw beyond the impossible and what if we allowed what moves us to move us? I want to be that girl who walks in her calling with passion and conviction. I want to live out a fierce calling designed by an awesome God. Who’s with me? Photo by Brooke Cagle on Unsplash What is a fierce calling? It’s living out our purpose with purpose. It’s impacting one life at a time while walking the path set before us. It’s discovering what God prepared in advance for us to do. And doing it. It’s time to believe that dreams can happen when we’re wide awake, and our calling can be a fierce reality. We’re probably already walking in it if we’d only open our eyes to God’s possibilities. Call to Action Pray for God to open your eyes to His fierce possibilities in your life. What’s your calling, friend? You need not fear because you never walk in your calling alone. Joshua 1:9 tells us to be strong and courageous because the Lord God is with us wherever we go. That’s everywhere. List the gifts and talents God has given you, and discover new ways and places to use them. If you’ve never completed a spiritual gifts assessment, you might try taking one. But no matter the outcome of the assessment, God might call you to accomplish things outside your gifting for His purposes. And He will equip you for the journey. May I Pray for You? Father in Heaven, I pray for my friend reading this prayer. I pray her eyes would be open to Your fierce possibilities in her life–and that she would draw strength and courage from You alone. I pray Your breath would breathe life into any lifeless circumstances in her life right now and that You would fill her with joy in Your presence. And I pray she would walk in her Fierce Calling by the power of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ Name. Amen (for full prayer listen to the episode) Reach out to me on my contact page and check out my free resources on the home page at dorisswift.com! Blessings! Doris

Are You Ready for Christmas? A Special Christmas Episode with a Christmas Poem & Prayer
How often have you heard the question, “Are you ready for Christmas?” How do you respond? Do you base your readiness on whether your Christmas shopping is done? Cookies made? I must admit, in past years, I tended to gauge my readiness for Christmas on my shopping list–but not this year. This year feels a little different. Our entire home flooded in September, and we’re still not back in it. I usually have a tree dressed to the nines by now and lighted garland adorning the entryways. Gifts wrapped, bagged, and tagged and cookies baking in the oven (well, the Pillsbury Dough Boy ones, and you can read about that here in my post, Confessions of a Faker Baker). This year? Not so much. At first, I feared the dreaded FOMO (fear of missing out) when I’d see all the beautiful Christmas tree photos plastered all over social media. Not being judgy, I usually plaster mine there too. But I realized what I feared most were my feelings. How would I feel about not putting up a real tree and not having a living room ready to put it up in? How would I feel about not decking the halls with boughs of holly? Then it hit me. I don’t need a tree or boughs of holly–I have Jesus, and He is all I need. We hear the phrase “the reason for the season,” and Jesus truly is our everything. God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, and He makes it clear in 2 Timothy 1:7: “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” Self-control–hmmm … That’s a fruit of the Spirit, and we’ve already received it when we are in Christ. So we can focus on what is really important this Christmas–the birth of our Savior, and because of His birth–we can accept Him and become children of God. We can celebrate because not only did Jesus put on flesh to dwell among us–He’s coming back to get us. We’ll be back in our home soon enough, and all will be good again. But even so, God is still good and hope is still ours because we have Jesus. Speaking of hope, I hope you enjoy this special episode where I read a Christmas poem and offer a Christmas prayer. If this season is a hard one–know that Jesus placed His joy in you that your joy may be complete. Deb DeArmond: Overcoming Doubts About Walking in Our Callings
You are gifted with creativity and equipped to walk in your calling. Do you believe this about yourself? This week I welcome back Deb DeArmond to the show. We’re talking about overcoming doubts about walking in our callings and Deb’s new book The Write Calling: Encouragement for the Writer’s Heart. Plus, this episode is not just for writers! Every woman of God has a Fierce Calling and every woman has experienced doubt at one time or another, amen? As Deb shares in the show, God equips us in what he calls us to do, and while we may not doubt our calling, we often doubt our own abilities to walk in that calling. Listen in to find out how we can overcome doubt! It was such a pleasure having Deb back on the show. She’s witty and wise, and you’ll glean from her experiences. I know what she shares will encourage, inspire, and challenge you, so listen in while I have a chat with Deb DeArmond. Fierce Calling is on the Spark Network, which can be found on the Edifi App!
