“If there's a high level of oxytocin, cortisol activity and that stress response tends to come down, and if there's a really high stress, or ongoing stress, repeated stress and there cortisol levels are coming up, oxytocin comes down." Jessalyn (she/her/they) is a certified SMC Full-Circle Doula, a CAPPA-Certified Childbirth Educator, and received a full scholarship to the University of Rochester, where she completed an Honors Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology. She is a lifelong advocate, activist and wordsmith, and recently moved to Central Oregon from Oakland, CA. ​She blends her private practice with programming support as an assistant at The Oakland Better Birth Foundation, a grassroots organization dedicated to addressing racial disparities in maternal, infant and family care and bringing awareness to reproductive justice realities. Today's episode is with Kimberly Seals Allers. She's an award-winning journalist turned speaker and advocate focused on advocating for equity in maternal and infant health. For the past seven years, she's have run on-the-ground community-partnered projects in Birmingham, AL, New Orleans, LA, Detroit and Philadelphia, to name a few, to better understand the lived experiences of birth and breastfeeding in low-income communities of color. She believes that everyone deserves an empowered birth experience where they are honored and respected for who they are, not treated differently, disrespectfully or inadequately because of who they are.   This was her mission with creating the concept of the Irth app to ensure that possibility for everyone.

In today's episode we talk with Michelle Smith. She's known for the soothing sound of her voice and calming presence, Michelle Smith, serves as an educator and advocate for families as they navigate our challenging medical system. Michelle is the founder of the Birth Ease Method, a birth hypnosis specialist, and a Calm Birth Instructor. She teaches parents how to connect with their inner wisdom, release their fears, and create a deep and profound relaxation habit. Vital skills that can serve families for the rest of their lives. With first-hand experience regarding the deep and far-reaching impacts of stress, birth trauma, and perinatal loss; Michelle has developed a specialization that includes perinatal health, stress reduction, grief and loss, trauma, and birth-related post-traumatic stress. Michelle possesses twenty years of experience as a clinical hypnotherapist, childbirth educator, birth and bereavement doula, and energy healing practitioner.  She is helping create transformation in the lives of families one birth at a time  

In today’s we discuss Ayurveda with Cristina Dos Santos. Cristina is a clinical ayurvedic specialist with over 2 years of experience. Ayurveda is the traditional Hindu system of medicine, which is based on the idea of balance in bodily systems and uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing. We talked about how ayurveda can be beneficial for your preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum.
