On Racial Injustice, Police Reform, Vision for the Future with Artist Joia B
Main Points: Joia walks us through her journey in being an artist and how art has always been at the core of who she is. “I wanted to make my mark in the world in a way that lasts forever so even when I am gone and no longer this vessel, I can still have a piece of me here to tell people who I was and who I am.” We get into the style of art she creates and the inspiration behind her work. Joia speaks to how white individuals can be allies for the black community. She talks about how important empathy is and taking the time to learn. “You become a part of the problem if you turn a blind eye to it.” She encourages us to really understand why we are supporting certain things and letting it come from a real place & to be aware of only doing things for attention / recognition. We touch upon how everyone’s way of showing up during these times is going to look a little different. Joia shares some of her own personal experiences + encounters she has had being black. “They love the culture, but they don’t love the people behind it.” She shares her thoughts on defunding the police, reformation, and having higher standards + qualifications in the police force. The importance of there being a connection to the police and the communities in which they are working. We discuss our vision for the future. Joia speaks to the importance of accountability in achieving a world full of peace, love, and harmony. She encourages us to remember this time as a deep lesson of respect for one another; that when we look back in time, we will always remember that we went through this together and we looked out for one another. She says to keep creating, learning, and having conversations even when this time is over.
