Chuck Todd to false equivalency Republican, Only one side that tried to overthrow the Capitol.
Chuck Todd did not allow Republican Congressman Tom Reed to get away with a false equivalence discussing the insurrection and more. Chuck Todd, no false equivalence on this one See full episodes here. Republicans have a serious problem on their hands. You see the party that likes to sell itself as the party of Law and Order, the party of Blue Lives Matter, and the patriotic party lost every single one of those monikers in with one seditious insurrection. They killed a cop, broke the law, and attempted to overthrow a Democratically elected government, and one of their proteges attempted to sell a stolen laptop to Russian spies. Congressman Tom Reed (R-NY) appeared with Chuck Todd and spoke about the country's polarization. Todd pointed out that his base makes it difficult to work with Democrats. He pushed back some making the case that his constituents give him some leeway because of who he is. They respect him, he claims. After back and forth for some time, Reed gave the impression that extremists are on both sides of the aisle. Chuck Todd surprisingly did not allow that false equivalence. “There was only one side that tried to overthrow the Capitol,” Chuck Todd said. “I think that is where people get very, ‘hey, let’s not share the blame immediately here. This got out of hand on the right.’” The congressman was forced to recoil. “You are absolutely correct on that,” Reed said. It is imperative that we not allow Republicans to draw false equivalencies between their seditious insurrection and anything done on the left. We must pin them continuously and correctly as unpatriotic undemocratic people who attempted to overthrow the U.S. government. This must be done through the election of 2022 and 2024. McConnell throws Trump, Ted Cruz, & Josh Hawley under the bus on the seditious insurrection.
Mitch McConnell did not hold back as he threw Donald Trump under the bus for the unpatriotic seditious insurrection on the Capitol of the United States. Mitch McConnell comes clean? See full episodes here. “The mob was fed lies,” McConnell said. “They were provoked by the President and other powerful people. And they tried to use fair and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the Federal Government, which they did not like. But we pressed on.  We stood together and said an angry mob would not get veto power over the rule of law in our nation. Not even for one night.” Who are those powerful people? Of course, it was Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley he was referring to in his speech.  But one should not give McConnell any kudos. He could have prevented the insurrection if he had come out very early and let Trump’s enablers and sycophants know that the election was one of the fairest elections in our history. But as corporations soured on the insurrection and started withholding dollars from the Republican Party, McConnell likely believed he had to act. Disney has had enough. So has Coca-Cola, Walmart, Hallmark, Amazon, Airbnb and Mastercard. After last week's violent riot on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, which left five people dead, dozens of the world's biggest corporations are pulling their political donations from America's Republicans. The companies — many consistent Republican donors in the past — are targeting the 147 Republicans who still challenged the results of America's presidential election after the Capitol building was stormed by Donald Trump's supporters on January 6.Some companies say those Republicans will receive no donations for the rest of their political lives."The insurrection at our nation's Capital was a direct assault on one of our country's most revered tenets: the peaceful transition of power," a Disney spokesman told Politico this week."In the immediate aftermath of that appalling siege, Members of Congress had an opportunity to unite — an opportunity that some sadly refused to embrace."In light of these events, we have decided we will not make political contributions in 2021 to lawmakers who voted to reject the certification of the Electoral College votes." Let’s be clear; Mitch McConnell is no less a fascist than Donald Trump. He knows how to put a facade over it. Katy Tur panel explains how the Republican Party became a cult.
Katy Tur, Steve Kornacki, and Norm Ornstein discussed how the Republican Party under Newt Gingrich transitioned into a cult. Is the Republican Party a cult? See full episodes here. The start of the transformation of the Republican Party into a cult began with Newt Gingrinch. "Newt very deliberately generated tribalism," Norman Ornstein said. "It was not just political polarization, different ideological viewpoints. It was trying to turn this into a situation where people could view Democrats as evil, trying to destroy their way of life. And really using a process where he would shatter all of the norms of behavior that we have seen around Congress to achieve that goal." Ornstein pointed out that, of course, Gingrich got help from Reagan's repeal of the Fairness Doctrine. He said Hastert subsequently accelerated the process of the transformation of the party. Mitch McConnell was the coup de grace with him defying all Senate norms. "The fear of being shunned or excommunicated," Ornstein said. "Would overwhelm your reluctance to violate more norms. And that working with Democrats was like sleeping with the enemy, with the evil apostate. And all of that has taken us to where we are today." Steve Kornacki would add that Gingrich taught his party that every opportunity must be used to push the Republican message. And he wanted the vocabulary to be always attacking. Karen Finney: “This is who we are.” But her message to both Democrats & the GOP was more profound.
Her closing statement could be taken figuratively and literally. Karen Finney had the most important message to Democrats & GOP today. Karen Finney nails it See full episodes here. I was really disappointed with the overall coverage of the Sunday morning shows today. Recently, Anand Giridharadas appeared on the Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell and provided some context to the challenging times Americans are going through. He gave Americans hope that we were going through pains to create a country that really represented the world. I was hoping that we would have more of that on the Sunday News shows. It was not to be. Then near the end of "This Week," Karen Finney did it. Karen first expressed faith in the work Democrats have started doing. She then castigated Republicans for trying to sweep the unpatriotic treasonous insurrection under the rug. But then she made an important statement Democrats better heed as we are the worst promoters of the Democratic, the Progressive message. "It's incumbent on Democrats to also as we now know in this modern media environment," Finney said. "To do a better job of communicating who we are, what we stand for, and what we're fighting for in terms of the things that are in the package that Biden has put forward. Anybody who is opposing that, again, a majority of Americans voted for Joe Biden. These are all the ideas that he campaigned on. So if you're opposing that, you're opposing the moving forward of this country." Finney made sure to correct the record on the Georgia win. In an effort that seemed to deny all the hard work by Stacey Abrams and grassroots organization, the notion is that the wins can be attributed to Trump's bad acts. The reality was the hard grassroots work that brought the win. After trying to join the conversation while others abused their time, Karen took the last minute and ensured she was not interrupted and had the most prescient message. "I will go back to my core message here, which is," Karen Finney said. "There cannot be unity in this country without accountability, and that is part of how we move forward. That is part of how Chuck Schumer is going to have to lead the Senate in terms of holding people accountable if they don't vote to support these policies. "The larger test of this moment in history is not just about convicting Donald Trump. It is about accountability and understanding the divisions in this country and figuring out how we unify and heal and move forward, and acknowledging that these divisions have been exploited by Trump. But they exist. This is who we are. It's not who we have to be." It could not have been said any better. Insurrection on Capitol: Funeral for White Supremacy. These people are the barnacles on the future.
In strikingly optimistic prose, Anand Giridharadas gets the insurrection on the Capitol correct. It is the funeral for white supremacy. Funeral for white supremacy See full episodes here. Lawrence O'Donnell examined an article that Anand Giridharadas wrote in "The.Ink," his newsletter, titled "We are falling on our face because we are jumping high." Giridharadas wrote the following prescient phrases. It’s scary out there right now. It’s going to be scary for some time to come. What has been unleashed, what has been revealed, is ugly. It is what makes democracies die. In the despair, it is easy to lose perspective. I certainly do all the time. But from time to time, I step back and try to remember where we are as a country on the arc of things. And I see then that this is both a very dark time and, potentially, a very bright time. It's important to hold these truths together. When I look down at the ground of the present right now, I feel depressed. If I lift my head to the horizon, I see a different picture. This is not the chaos of the beginning of something. This is the chaos of the end of something. …Because the 40 years of this plutocratic takeover — of the ideology that said if you're torn between doing what's good for money and what's good for people, always do what’s good for money; these stories about lazy workers and welfare queens; and any number of other fraudulent tales that were meant to justify life in the Hamptons — if I allow myself to feel this way on a good day, it all actually feels like it's burning down. And on matters of race and identity, likewise, the Trump era doesn't have the crackle of a launch. It has been a mourning. A mourning for white power. A mourning for a time when simply to be white and show up was enough. A mourning for an era in which simply to be a man, and not necessarily an especially capable one, could get you ahead of other people. A mourning for a time when you could be the default idea of an American and not have to share your toys.We must understand that what we've been living through is backlash. Backlash. It's not the engine of history. It is the revolt against the engine of history. Then we might remember — just to pat ourselves on the back for a second — that what we are actually endeavoring to do right now is to become a kind of society that has seldom, if ever, existed in history. Which is become a majority-minority, democratic superpower. Anand Giridharadas puts more succinctly as he spoke to Lawrence O'Donnell. "It's very easy to lose sight of that fundamental through-line and that fundamental narrative in American life," said Anand Giridharadas. "Given what has happened. Last week was insurrection-week. This week was impeachment week. Next week's inauguration week. We never got infrastructure week. And it's dark. It's very, very dark. But I think if you look at so much of this darkness, it is not the darkness of the beginning of something. This is not a launch party that you're seeing on the other side of the screen. This is a funeral for something. It is a funeral for white supremacy. It is a funeral for a kind of outdated outmoded male power. It is a mourning for a time in which certain Americans could feel and claim to be the default of an American and not have to share." Giridharadas then made the following prescient statement. "So I have been trying as a practice because I'm as despairing as everybody else right now to remember that what we are witnessing in so many of these dark days is backlash," Anand said. "It's not the engine of history. It's a backlash against the engine of history. These people that you're seeing are not the future. They are the barnacles on the future." It could not be said any better. Rep. Clyburn calls them out as a hate group and reveals an American unfortunate truth.
Rep. Jim Clyburn says what many rarely accept. America has a domestic terrorism problem mostly perpetrated by virulent white supremacist groups. Clyburn hits the nail on the head. See full episodes here. Clyburn said that there are likely insurrectionist supervisors that probably should not bee in the Congress. He specifically called out a couple people associated with QAnon. He said that it is a hate group. "I think that we have some sympathizers in the Congress that probably ought not be there," Clyburn said. "There are two people [who] just got elected who identify with this QAnon group. Now we know that's a hate group and if they are there to represent their interests then we need to be concerned about them. And I think that the law enforcement people need to pay close attention to them." Clyburn then tells an unfortunate truth. "We have got to get serious about the fact that we in this country have a problem with domestic terrorism, domestic terrorism," Clyburn said. "We have never made that admission. It is time for us to come down off our high horse and admit that there is domestic terrorism in this country. And there's a way to get to the bottom of it. And they know, I know it. I've been a part of it at the state level and a lot of them are much smarter than I am. They can get to the bottom of this at the national level." Rep. Jim Clyburn admonished Republicans. Tell the truth about the election. Stop hurting the country.
Rep. Jim Clyburn admonished Republicans as he demanded that they tell the truth of the election to stop those who would hurt the country. Clyburn hits the nail on the head. See full episodes here. Clyburn told it like it is. "Why would you have to pay people, to tell the truth?" Clyburn asked. "I don't understand that. My Republican colleagues have a responsibility to this country's stability, to tell the truth. Stop lying about this election. They know full well this election was not stolen. They know full well this was one of their own, was in charge and he had said it was the most secure election in the history of the country. And I feel that having been subjected to bad elections in the past, this was not one of them. And so I think that they are incumbent, from their duties, from the offices they hold, to use their soapbox to tell people the truth and stop this lying. I don't know what the benefit is." He would then called them out in no uncertain terms. This is Martin Luther King Jr.'s weekend birthday," Clyburn continued. "This is the weekend that we celebrate his birthday. And Martin Luther King Jr. told us in his letter from the Birmingham City Jail that he was coming to the conclusion that the people of ill will in our society make a much better use of time than the people of goodwill and it's time for the people of goodwill to stop being complicit. Stop being silent. Silence gives consent. When you be silent about stuff like this you are consenting. And King concluded his thought in that letter saying that we are going to be made to repent. And not just for the vitriolic words and deeds of bad people but for the appalling silence of good people. I plead to the good people in the Republican Party to the good people in this country, break your silence don't let this country come apart based upon a lie." Why Jan 6th attempted coup on the US should give legs to #DefundThePolice
Postulate this: Who in their right mind funds their demise? Much was made of the #DefundThePolice moniker. For many of us, in the aggregate, police do not represent the body of comfort that it does for many in the "majority" community. Should this revive #DefundThePolice? See full episodes here. It was not enough for many to see black and brown (POC) bodies shot, maimed, and mostly disrespected. After all, isn't their violence in those communities anyway? They must have done something deserving of their deaths and disrespect. Right? It should be noted that Appalachia shares similar socioeconomic issues/violence issues that often go unreported or placed into the criminal justice system. Some observed the unpatriotic seditious insurrection of the US Capitol by the righteous #BlueLivesMatter crowd (as long as it is POC the Blues are maiming) with incredulity, and surprise. It was a picture rarely seen on national TV. Others were not surprised at the insurrection but hoped it represented every I-told-you-so moment. In that one event, the America many prefer not to see was evident. Those who deny that racism was a tool in the movement heard and saw the epithets as well as a first run of the Confederate flag in the US Capitol, the people’s house. They saw that the purported care for law and order was devoid of value. They saw that police reserved their savagery for POC as they treated violent attackers with decency. Segue: Here is a fact. The Republican Party and Conservatives represent the minority in this country. Even with a maxed out Republican performance they were short of the majority by millions of Americans. Yet, their minority, because of the undemocratic nature of our Constitution allowed the GOP to rule whether they had the presidency or not. I will repeat ad-nauseam; that California, which has 67 times more people than Wyoming, get just two senators, is an aberration that must not continue to stand. The Right-Wing panic now is that with complete Democratic control of all of government, if they show some spine, they can really get their policies implemented by getting rid of the filibuster and other undemocratic modals. A coup was the last hope if one believes Democrats will use their control of the government as effectively as Mitch McConnell and his party did. Re-Segue: A large number of cops from around the country were a part of the insurrection, an overtly violent, racist, anti-Semitic event. Am I supposed to feel safe in the presence of police where that was just a visible representation of what too many of us see when no one is watching? Hell no! #DefundTheDamnPolice. Keep a minimalist force to handle violent crimes. Invest in community centers and people to uplift communities. Policing communities without investing in the communities make them cages. Invest in mental health professionals, therapists, and those who deescalate. Learn from other societies that have gotten it right. Suffice it to say I hope the coup attempt becomes a learning and humbling experience for the country. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Stephanie Ruhle: Her story just made me think about privilege. Sad reality/truth.
MSNBC hosts Stephanie Ruhle and Chris Jansing show an understanding of their privilege that clearly makes them more credible journalists. They acknowledge their privilege. Refreshing. See full episodes here. Chris Jansing gave a touching story about her family members who got COVID-19. Ultimately all worked out fine. Jansing was able to secure help and professional advice to ensure a more positive outcome. Stephanie Ruhle interjected with a message that too often is ignored. "I do want to ask you though watching this and hearing her story just made me think about privilege," Stephanie Ruhle said. "You got to call Vin Gupta. I got to call Vin Gupta. We're super lucky women with great jobs with access to health experts. What must this be like for people who don't have families of privilege or access to anything? What is it like for the millions of Americans out there who are just suffering in silence?" Jansing responded properly. "I thought about that every day," Jansing said. "First of all, again, I have a large family. So I wasn't working on this alone. I have other brothers and sisters who have been taking this on every single day. I have the privilege of working for a company that when I said my sister is critically ill, they said go do what you need to do. There was never any question about that, and I still had a paycheck coming in. And yes, when I was making phone calls, and I made a lot of phone calls to help my sister." Jansing pointed out that she knew the questions to ask as a journalist. She acknowledges that most Americans have neither the support from their companies or a social safety net to fall back on at all. "Few other families in this country have the ability to do that," Jansing lamented. "And we're 10 months in, and we're talking about the same problems we talked about these disparities Stephanie at the start." Some companies have funded sedition. So explains CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin on donation stoppage.
CNBC Host Andrew Ross Sorkin did not fall for corporations' newfound disdain for Trump & GOP after his insurrection plot on the Capitol. Sorkin tells the truth about corporations & sedition See full episodes here. Stephanie Ruhl reported that many companies stopped their political donations to the Republicans who participated in the seditious insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. She said some companies are suspending all contributions to all political parties, Democrats and Republicans alike. Andrew Ross Sorkin had an important response. "It's a historic moment," Sorkin said. "But at the same time, it's a defensive moment. I don't think we should give these companies any more credit than suggesting that they are recognizing what has happened here. Some of them have funded sedition. That's what's happened. they've funded sedition and the good news, if there is good news, is that they are acknowledging it and they are putting some of these funding efforts on pause. Sorkin then castigated companies that stopped contributions to both parties. It is unfair because it penalizes those who did nothing wrong. "I think there's a big distinction between those who are singling out the leaders that supported this effort and sedition and those that didn't, said Sorkin. "The idea of pausing across the board to some degree is a cop-out because it effectively is injuring those that might be on the right side of things." We should note that corporations have been complicit in supporting sedition before. The consternation had been growing in the months between Franklin D. Roosevelt’s election and his inauguration, but his elimination of the gold standard in April 1933 infuriated some of the country’s wealthiest men.Titans of banking and business worried that if U.S. currency wasn’t backed by gold, inflation could skyrocket and make their millions worthless. Why they could end up as poor as most everyone else was during the Great Depression. So, according to the sworn congressional testimony of a retired general, they decided to overthrow the government and install a dictator who was more business-friendly. After all, they reasoned, that had been working well in Italy. How close this fascist cabal got, and who exactly was in on it, are still subjects of historical debate. But as the dust settles after the pro-Trump attack on the U.S. Capitol, and as it becomes clearer how close lawmakers came to catastrophe, the similarities to the Business Plot are hard to ignore.“The nation has never been at a potential brink as it was then up until, I think, now,” said Sally Denton, author of the book “The Plots Against the President: FDR, A Nation in Crisis, and the Rise of the American Right.” Please listen to the entire video clip.
