The first generation American, first generation college graduate, first generation corporate professional and now one of the first African American to publish a book on management consulting, Christie Lindor spent the first five years of her consulting career as an outsider struggling and shocked to find herself in such a competitive environment with very few women in a leadership consulting roles and even fewer people of colour. During a pitch event, she was in a room with a number of CEOs and a gentleman turned to her chief technology officer and said: “are you going to let the black girl pitch?”. Anita felt angry, frozen but she was able to turn it around and deliver a great pitch that got praises from other VCs. Anita says: ” we know that there are people out there who will try to step on your dreams, but you need to let go of those hurdles and keep focused on your ideas and be heard”. “Are you going to let the black girl pitch?” Anita is constantly leveraging her corporate skills in her entrepreneurial world. ” I am the queen of free”. Networking and collaboration are key to succeed. Finding someone to mentor you and make sure the relationship is authentic and genuine. Choose your mentors /mentee very carefully. As the youngest of 8 children, Anita “I am the Queen of Free.” -Anita Gardyne over 15 years in the corporate world has been a tremendous asset to transition to an entrepreneurial world. A decision had to be made regarding raising the children and waiting for her time to step up and do what she always knew she could – become a successful entrepreneur. The more you understand what marketing is, the better off you’re going to be.” -Jaime Jay The Start of an Entrepreneurial Journey Jaime’s entrepreneurial started at the very young age of 12 years old. Their family lived near a golf course in Colorado that time. He and his brother saw the opportunity, and sold lemonades just across the golf course. They knew they’ll earn money if they charge it a little bit. Eventually, they decided to start another business endeavor. So, they collected golf balls and sold them. Experience in the Corporate World Jaime loved the idea of working and earning since that childhood experience. As their family passed by some huge corporate buildings one night, he had the inspiration to venture into the corporate world. “One day, that’s going to be me. I’m going to be on top of the building.” -Jaime Jay He pursued it years later, and spent some time in the technology sector and the radio sector. But, it turned out to be very restrictive. Serving Clients Better Jaime left the corporate world and started his own business, a real estate ad agency in California. But by 2008, he lost all of his clients. He needed to start over. “In order for me to move at the pace that I wanted to move at, I really have to have the ability to make a decision on the fly so that I can serve my clients better.” -Jaime Jay That’s when he took his knowledge and expertise in websites and marketing, and founded Slapshot Studio.
