Educators have many roles and responsibilities beyond instructing or training a group of people. Oftentimes, educators find themselves as a caregiver for a family member or friend. In this conversation, Elizabeth Miller provides practical strategies and tools that family caregivers can do to integrate self-care into their lives, so they avoid caregiver burnout.Elizabeth Miller is a wife, mother, full-time employee, family caregiver, author and Certified Caregiving Consultant. She obtained a B.A. in Journalism from Penn State University and currently leads the program management office for a fortune 1000 company. She had the pleasure of being a substitute teacher for 4 years at an elementary school. Elizabeth’s personal experiences caring for aging parents with chronic and terminal illnesses as well as caring for a sibling with developmental disabilities inspired her to create Happy Healthy Caregiver in 2015. Through her speaking, consulting, writing and online community, Elizabeth helps family caregivers integrate caregiving and self-care into their daily lives. Self-care with Chrisdya HoustonIn this conversation, Chrisdya Houston provides some practical tips about planning self-care. She shares the importance of rational thinking and emotional intelligence in relation to self-care.A native of Dallas, Texas, Chrisdya Houston successfully completed her compulsory education at Skyline Career Development Center and was accepted into her first choice - Southern Methodist University, where she went on to graduate in 1996 with a triple major in Journalism, Psychology, and Sociology. In 2012, she obtained a Master of Education in Curriculum& Instruction with an emphasis on Literacy from the University of Texas at Arlington and is currently completing the Learning Therapy Program at SMU to become a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner. As an educator, Chrisdya has earned Texas Teacher Certifications in General Elementary, Reading, and English as a Second Language. She also acquired the in-districtcredentials to serve the Talented & Gifted. Professionally, she has served the Dallas Independent School District for 20 years in the capacities of: elementary classroom teacher, secondary reading improvement teacher, and ESL Instructional Support Specialist. In her current role as a Dyslexia Interventionist, she continues to focus on literacy by helping students overcome obstacles that keep them from achieving academically. Through her previous role as an Adjunct Professor of Writing for the Dallas County Community College District, Chrisdya’s work in education not only helps children, but adults as well.Education is a staple in Chrisdya’s life, and so is entrepreneurship. Known as the “Travel Guru,” she is a professional travel agent who owns her own home-based travel business. She serves as a travel team trainer and also helps other people become travel agents.
