Get to Know Ecuador Cares
On this week’s “Ecuador At Your Service” radio show on the Overseas Radio Network, Ashley & Michel interview Diane Lenz, Founder and President of Ecuador Cares. Diane talks about starting her non-profit organization and how – thanks to an army of volunteers and generous donations – her organization helped to save a Yunguilla orphanage from closing its doors last year. She also tells us about the organization’s new focus –Hogar Miguel Leon – a refuge in the center of downtown Cuenca that houses 31 orphans and 65 elders. Diane recounts programs being implemented by Ecuadorian and North American volunteers who are part of Ecuador Cares, that include support for young people who want to finish their education, a job placement program, a sex education program, and a halfway house for those turning 18 who will have to leave the center. The show focuses on the importance of volunteerism, working with local community leaders, about breaking the cycle of poverty, and how loving companionship for elders makes all the difference in these people’s lives. Additionally, Diane talks about the upcoming Noche de Gala – a fundraiser taking place at Hotel Oro Verde on November 10. Featuring Rocio Illescas of CETAP Lucy
Rocio Illescas, founder of CETAP Lucy, a rural-based program in Chilcapampa, outside the city of Cuenca will be the featured guest on Monday’s “Ecuador At Your Service” radio show. CETAP Lucy provides a pre-school and after-school experience for disadvantaged children She is joined by Frances Augusta Hogg, an author and serial volunteer who is helping Rocio to expand this incredible program. The Archbishop of Cuenca Talks About New Tourist Campaign To Save The Bule Domes
On Monday’s “Ecuador At Your Service” radio show, Ashley and Michel are honored to be interviewing the Archbishop of Cuenca, Ecuador, Monsignor Luis Gerardo Cabera. The interview discusses the new tourism campaign, sponsored by The Archdiocesan House of Cuenca and the Hotel Association of Azuay -- “Ruta Corazon de Cuenca (“Heart of Cuenca Route”) -- that kicked off on April 1st. The campaign is aimed at raising critical funding to repair the city’s most recognizable sight– the blue domes of the Cathedral of the Immaculate (the “New Cathedral.”) The Monsignor will talk about the cultural and religious significance of the Cathedral, and will also tell listeners about their fundraising campaign that takes visitors on a tour of religious iconic buildings and sites in Cuenca, including the Episcopal House, the Old Cathedral, the Cathedral of the Immaculate, and the gardens of the San Luis seminary. A visit to the catacombs of the Old Cathedral and 300 crypts of the New Cathedral, as well as to the terraces of the Cathedral of the Immaculate, (for those who can climb the155 steps) is also included. Women of Substance - Extraordinary Women and their Stories from Around the World
In honor of International Women’s Day, Sunday March 8th, and to celebrate the accomplishments of seven extraordinary women that will be recounted in the upcoming performance of the play SEVEN by the Azuay Community Theater (ACT) in Cuenca, the “Ecuador At Your Service” radio show will interview two of Cuenca’s own incredible women – Elinor Williams and Deana Culp. The show will feature insights into the lives of Deana and Elinor, who have spent time living in India and the Middle East respectively, giving glimpses into the state of women’s rights worldwide.
