Stephen DeAcutis of Stevie D ft. Corey Glover and Doug Henthorn of Doug Henthorn & The LLC
In this episode we sit down with music producer/songwriter/engineer, Steve DeAcutis as well as world class singer/songwriter/guitarist, Doug Henthorn. These two longtime friends and frequent collaborators walk us through meeting in the mid 90’s when their band POD was signed to Sony records by John Kalodner, how they each picked up the pieces carving out successful careers in the music business writing, creating and touring after their record deal unfortunately went south, and how the loss of Steve’s mom inspired the writing of his new album, Torn From the Pages, which features Doug and legendary Living Colour vocalist, Corey Glover. Stephen DeAcutis Stephen DeAcutis has been working professionally as a mixer, producer, engineer, writer, and performer since the early 1980’s, having honed his skills and training under such studio heavyweights as Andy Wallace (Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana), Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith), and Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne) amassing credits that include such acts as Vanilla Fudge, Gladys Knight, Travers and Appice, Corey Glover, and Cyndi Lauper, to name a few. He has been contracted by Sony, Interscope, LaFace, Miramax, Columbia, MTV, The Speed Channel, ESPN, Discovery, and numerous others. From hard hitting rock and pop to death metal and country, you’ll find few more experienced and musically intuitive than Stephen DeAcutis. The achievements of mixing and production specialist Stephen DeAcutis have spanned decades, taken on several roles, and manifested into a diverse number musical genres. But the common thread throughout these accomplishments has been the artist-friendly attention to detail and dedication of the man collaborators affectionately call “Stevie D.” As the founder and operator of Sound Spa Productions, Stephen has applied his craft as a mixer, producer, engineer, composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist to help guide and realize the visions of some of the industry’s most elite artists and musicians. He has always told his clients that his goal as a mixer/producer is to take the vision of the artist and bring it to its highest musical and emotional levels – to serve the integrity of that vision and not impose his own. “It is my purpose in this lifetime,” says Stephen, “I love the work, and it doesn’t feel at all like work.” While it may not “feel” like work to him, that doesn’t change the fact that Stephen has worked hard for more than three decades lending his expertise to a countless number of ambitious projects – and in the meantime building a tremendous skill set, not to mention a collection of gear that rivals that of any studio on the planet. Doug Henthorn Doug’s been changing the oil in a number of projects since founding and fronting the now disbanded blues-rock band Healing Sixes (2000-14). His debut release ‘Cold Medicine’ (2016) is a crafty and brooding songscape with more of a focus on voice and lyric than his previous H6’s era. His current release “The LLC” (2019) is a fun barebones rock record with a healthy dose of newly termed ‘Alternative Blues’. Doug is a singer, guitarist, songwriter, performer and producer. Often all at the same time. Besides his current solo project and Healing Sixes, Doug has shared his voice and/or guitar skills with notables such as Joe Bonamassa, John Hiatt, Jason Bonham, and Beth Hart to name a few. Doug performs and records all over the US and abroad while maintaining his residence in central Indiana. The post Stephen DeAcutis of Stevie D ft. In this episode we chat with Steven Rosenblatt, Josh Rahn & Glenn Handler, Co-Founders and General Partners at Oceans, a new kind of venture capital firm helmed by a team of early stage investors and mentors focused on giving start-ups the hands on support they need to succeed. These NYC tech legends take us through their collective experiences at Apple, Facebook and Google, where they saw a deficiency in the standard VC ecosystem and how their unique people first approach has already put them far ahead of the curve. Oceans Steven RosenblattCo-founder, General Partner With more than 20 years of experience scaling startups and building technology companies in the digital and mobile ecosystem, Steven Rosenblatt co-founded Oceans, a new kind of venture capital firm, in 2018 where he currently serves as General Partner. During his time, Foursquare won numerous awards, including being named in CNBC’s Disruptor 50 list as one of the most disruptive tech companies in the world, Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 as one of the fastest growing technology companies in North America, and won Ad Age’s Best Places to work. He led his team and the New York office during key transformational times such as the launch of newsfeed, the pivot to mobile and cross device measurement and early stages of Machine Learning optimization. By understanding the nuances of working with people from different backgrounds and the value a diverse and offbeat team holds, Joshua built, managed, and mentored Facebook’s first $100M office, surpassing year-over-year growth 100% for five consecutive years. During his 9 yr tenure he managed the development and implementation of integrated Facebook marketing partnerships as the company scaled from 20 million to 1.5 billion monthly active users. Joshua is a serial start up entrepreneur with 2 successful exits prior to his time at Facebook including the sale of his first tech startup to Sony 550 Ventures. Joshua supports a number of nonprofits including Hudson River Park Friends, The Gun Safety Alliance, and the March for Our Lives team. Most weekends Joshua can be found on the sidelines of his three highly over scheduled kids’ countless soccer, dance and table tennis matches. Glenn HandlerCo-founder, General Partner As a co-founder and General Partner at Oceans, Glenn Handler brings over 20 years of experience in recruiting and HR—helping to build and retain high-performing teams around the world. A recruiting veteran of Morgan Stanley, Google, and most recently Facebook (where he was hired in 2008 as the first monetization recruiter), Glenn believes that people are the reason a company succeeds or fails. To quote Steve Jobs, “Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.” Hiring and building great teams is what Glenn has been focused on for the totality of his career. For nearly nine years, Glenn led global staffing efforts at Facebook, where he was the primary partner for every VP and Director in the Global Marketing Solutions team and was accountable for driving headcount growth from around 30 to over 4,000. He and his teams over the years have partnered with and hired thousands of the world’s most influential sales leaders, marketers, and engineers. During Glenn’s tenure, Glassdoor’s Employee Choice Awards named Facebook the No.1 Best Place to Work three times and listed them in the Top 10 in eight out of the last ten years. Prior to Facebook, Glenn was a member of the HR Recruiting and Programs team at Google where he led recruiting for APAC and LATAM—and implemented global projects and processes to create more effective teams across the Engineering discipline globally.
