Tweet This Transcription: [0:38] Jen: So today we’re really thrilled to have Tracy Secombe with us. Tracy’s from a global health and wellness company in network marketing. So, welcome, Tracy. [0:48] Tracy: Thanks, Jen. Great to be here. [0:50] Jen: Great to have you. Today we’re going to be talking to Tracy about attitude. So Tracy, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? What’s your background? Read Full Transcript [1:00] Tracy: Sure! I grew up in a country town called Port Lincoln in South Australia and then I came to Adelaide to finish my schooling. I started my university degree doing physiotherapy, but then I went to Texas for a year as an exchange student. [1:15] Jen: How exciting. [1:17] Tracy: It was. It was amazing because way back then, they had never really had an Australian in a little country town I was in, so I was kind of a celebrity because they loved my accent and I experienced wonderful opening up to business because while I was an exchange student, I noticed that they had the year 12 or senior year T-shirts with all the names on the back. So when I came back we started up our first business which was the U-12 Jumpers and that was sort of my dipping the toe into business at just 18. [1:48] Jen: How did that business go for you? [1:51] Tracy: Well, it was a great start to business and a great learning curve because what we found is that we were unable to actually patent the design because it was different with all the different names which meant that, pretty soon after we started we were undercut by the printers and the suppliers of the jumpers. But it was a great experience. It was really awesome to learn that and also it allowed us to then buy our next business. My brother and I bought a news agency and I worked in the news agency on the weekends while I studied physiotherapy during the week. [2:24] Jen: Right. So what led you here? [2:27] Tracy: Well, I have run my own physiotherapy business for 20 years and I wasn’t looking to add another business to what I was already doing. I really ended up in the direct selling industry through trying the products. I was down at the school where my children go and a good friend of mine was looking amazing and so I started using the products and had a great result. So, really, when I first started, I was a customer. [2:55] Jen: Right. And can you give me a short overview of your business? [2:58] Tracy: Sure. My business is based on anti-aging which I’m the perfect age for and its skin care and nutritional range. I have over 10,000 people in my organisation in 45 different countries. I’ve been able to build this business working part time in it alongside of running my physiotherapy business and looking after my three children. [3:19] Jen: You must be a very, very busy woman. [3:23] Tracy: [Laughs] Well, I would say that I’m very organised. I think it’s important to be organised when you have a lot going on. But I really enjoy what I do so it doesn’t feel like work. A lot of people say, “You must work hard.” And I wouldn’t say that. I would say that I take a lot of action but I have a lot of fun while I’m taking that action. [3:41] Jen: If you weren’t in direct selling, what do you think you would be doing? [3:45] Tracy: Well, I still have my physiotherapy company and so I think if I wasn’t introduced to that, I probably would still be working in it, rather than being able to work on it. And that’s really the freedom that’s been created through building my direct selling business is that, due to the residual income, I’ve been able to stop consulting as a physiotherapist and just build the business and work on it rather than in it. And that’s created more residual income in that business as well. So I think it’s really opened my eyes to leverage and working smarter rather than harder. [4:19] Jen: Right. Look I know you’re excited to talk with us today about attitude. Can you tell me why this particular topic stood out for you? [4:27] Tracy: Well, I’m also a facilitator for a program called, “Thinking Into Results“, which was developed by Bob Procter and one of the subjects in that course is attitude. So, what I’ve learned is that attitude is really a compilation of our thoughts, our feelings, and our actions and really our results come from those three things. So if we don’t think of the right things, feel the right things, and then do the right things, we’re going to keep getting results that we don’t like. It’s really important for people to understand this concept and really, you can apply it to any aspect of your life. [5:01] Jen: How would you describe your own attitude? Maybe you could share with us, maybe about your attitude going into this interview today. [5:09] Tracy: Well, my attitude like everybody’s can vary, but definitely over all it’s improved. And I would say that it started to improve when I first picked up the audio book called The Power by Rhonda Byrne. That really focuses on feelings and the fact that what we get in the world and what shows up is related to the way that we feel. Our feelings are really caused by what we think and we tend to think things habitually which we can change (which is a good news). So I certainly saw a shift when I started listening to that audio, but I’m not perfect. I absolutely have good days and bad days like everybody else, but I think I’ve become really in tuned with my attitude. So I noticed very quickly if I’m not feeling great and I do something about it. My attitude coming into this was I was really grateful. I was really grateful that somebody in my company selected me to have this interview. I was excited about doing something that I’ve never done before. I’ve never been interviewed for a podcast before and I just think that every opportunity is something to embrace. So that’s always been my attitude around new things. [6:18] Jen: You mentioned that you’ve become really in tuned with your own attitude. Sometimes people don’t generally have a high level of attitude awareness of themselves. I don’t know if they’re tired or have a sore back, but usually don’t have a good handle on their own attitude, which really is a mistake. Attitude is everything. It runs the way you perceive the world; the world perceives you. Just like you said, when you bring someone new into your business, how do you help them get in touch in their own attitudes as well? [6:43] Tracy: That’s such a great question, Jen. When I take somebody into my team, I start with why. I ask them why they’re doing this business so that we can really get in tuned with that, so that they can stay focused on why they decided to do this. That’s going to help them when things go wrong. We’re always going to have ups and downs and there are going to be things that are great and then there’s going to be things like people saying no to you that make you feel disappointed or even rejected. And if everybody can come back to their why and really focus on why they want to do this and the vision that they have for the future for themselves and their families and for the other people that they can help, then they’re going to be able to always check their attitude and bring it back to that why. So I think that when people first join, they’re at their most excited and that’s when you really want to have the discussion around attitude so that they know what to expect and that they know that people will say no so that they can handle it. So you are really taken by the hand and guide them through that experience. [7:44] Jen: Do you think that attitude has the ability to hold someone back in growing and building their business, stop them from moving through the next level? [7:52] Tracy: Absolutely. I see this all the time and I feel really fortunate that I’m able to reach out to those people when I can see that they’re being blocked. And often it comes down to a lack of self-belief. So they know that they’ve got a great tool here with the company and they know that other people are succeeding but they don’t understand why they are not succeeding themselves. So we can really dig deep into what it is that’s blocking them and perhaps they fear around rejection, but also the fact that they may not believe that they personally can do it even though other people are succeeding around them. [8:28] Jen: Are you able to share, maybe a story about someone in your team who didn’t have a great attitude and the issues that they had and how you were able to overcome them? [8:37] Tracy: Yes, absolutely. The one that comes to mind is a person that hadn’t really understood the concept of responsibility. So sometimes we can think that the people outside of us are to blame for our circumstances; that’s it’s somebody else’s fault, the upline, the sideline, or the downline, our customers just not rebuying. All of those things and once you understand that you’re actually in control that it’s really up to you, then you can really create a shift and as a leader in a network marketing company, you really want to develop the skill to come from a place of genuinely wanting to help that person to create a shift which allows you to speak honestly with them and say, “You know, you are the one that’s responsible for your business. Nobody else can do it for you.” So you need to have a look at the fact that you’re blaming everybody else for your lack of success when really, it comes down to you and what you do. And it’s really in the approach when you want to have that conversation with someone. And I always use myself as an example and tell stories about how I know what they’re going through because we do. That’s what so beautiful about this industry is we have the ups and downs personally, so when our team goes through it, we can share our stories and help them get through those ups and downs. [9:56] Jen: Okay, well I might get a little bit personal with you then. You mentioned that you yourself has had challenges that may have affected your attitude, how did you overcome them? Can you share that with us? [10:05] Tracy: Yes, look, a lot of people will tell you that life gets in the way and of course it does. We are not a one dimensional being and we’re not just running a direct selling business; we have families, we have personal things going on and sometimes we can become really distracted by those things. A lot of people ask me how I manage so many different things. Unfortunately, a few months ago, my mother passed away which of course was incredibly emotional roller coaster for me and so I was terribly distracted by that and of course my emotions were very low. I felt very, very sad. And so this is the challenge for people when we’re faced with something like this and what I needed to do was go through those emotions and feel that grief, but then I was able to separate it sometime so that I could focus on still running my training sessions, still reaching out and listening to other people’s problems and helping them and understanding that everybody goes through this and this is a part of life. So when you are faced with really serious challenges like that, you can keep going if you understand that these things will happen and what my mom would want from me right now is for me to continue to grow and to continue to be happy and succeed. [11:28] Jen: I’m really sorry to hear about your mom. [11:29] Tracy: Thanks, Jen. [11:30] Jen: I think you’re a real inspiration to be able to just keep on going and keep looking after your business. [11:36] Tracy: Thank you. [11:37] Jen: It’s just really incredible. Why do you think that attitude is particularly important when growing a successful direct selling business? Do you think it’s more important in this business than say, others? Or would you say they’re equally important? [11:49] Tracy: I think attitude is important in every area of life but I think it’s especially important in business. And the reason for that is because we’re dealing with people. No matter what sort of business you’re in, you either have a product or a service or both and you need people to buy those things. So, attitude is going to affect relationships. People love someone who’s happy. People loves someone who’s positive. So if you’re always complaining, and you’re always negative, you are not going to attract people into your business. And this is an attraction marketing business because people don’t just join companies. People join people. So to be the best version of yourself, you really want to have a great attitude and be positive and be happy and be inspiring to others. [12:37] Jen: If you are coaching a direct selling consultant who wanted to grow her business, what would you suggest that she did every day that would make the biggest difference to her bottom line as far as attitude is concerned? [12:49] Tracy: That is such a great question. One of the things I really focus on is what I call success habits. We don’t create success through something that we do once. We create success through something that we do over and over again. And I actually have rituals that I’ve developed over the years that I do every morning which is affected the success in both my physiotherapy business and this business. And I would say to you, if you sit down every morning when you wake up and write down what you’re grateful for, what are you grateful for in your life right now including the things that are going right in your business. Sometimes we spend too much time focusing on what’s wrong with our business rather than being grateful for what’s right with it. if you’ve got one customer, be grateful for that customer. If you have a great result with the product, be happy and grateful for that result. And then move into what you would like to create. Be really clear on your goals and expect to achieve those goals and feel happy and positive and excited about achieving those goals.  And then most importantly, write your priority to-do list. What is the most important thing that you need to do today that’s going to take you closer to your goals? [14:03] Jen: So this is something that you do every single day? [14:06] Tracy: Yes. I start my day with exercise. So as soon as I get out of bed, I exercise and while I’m exercising, I listen to motivational audio and then I get straight into my gratitude list, my goals list, and my to-do list. And then after I’ve done the school run, I sit down and get on with that to-do list. [14:25] Jen: Wow, that’s really incredible. So how many kids do you have? Just to remind me. [14:29] Tracy: I’ve got three children. My son is 11 and my girls are 16 and 17. [14:35] Jen: Okay. I was going to say they are good age then. I can just imagine if I was trying to do the things that you’re describing to me every morning. [laughs] [14:42] Tracy: Yes. It doesn’t work with toddlers. [laughter] [14:46] Jen: Okay, I’m feeling a bit better about myself right now and thinking, “Oh my goodness, my house is chaos in the morning.” [14:52] Tracy: I remember. [14:53] Jen: I kind of get that, that peace that you’re talking about when I come to work, so…[laughs] [14:59] Tracy: Yes, exactly. And maybe that’s a great thing for you to do as soon as you arrive at work, start that little ritual then. [15:05] Jen: I will. So, can you tell me, what does it feel like when you first experienced that, I made it moment? Did your attitude change at this point in any way? [15:15] Tracy: It does change, actually. It’s interesting because the irony is that when you first start and you don’t have any success, because you’re going to be just started, you really want to create that feeling of success because that’s going to help you take the right action in the right away and attract the success. But there is a shift because when you got to a certain point where you’re earning great residual income that takes a lot of the stress away in terms of covering the bills and the school fees; you know, all the things that we want and need in life, then you just have a whole new level of being relaxed about your approach. I always talk to people about not being attached to the outcome when they reach out to a prospect or a potential customer. And that’s easier said than done when you really want them to try your products or you really want them to join your business. Whereas, when you reach a certain level and you no longer need them to, you have a lot more success because they can feel that. So it’s really the secret of trying to create that feeling right from the start, but you will get there once you actually reach that milestone because naturally there isn’t as much need or desperation for it anymore because you’re already experiencing that success. [16:36] Jen: There are lots of books and resources, programs out there and you’ve mentioned a few along the interview, for people that are looking to grow themselves, develop themselves and their business, what resources would you consider a must have for other direct sellers? [16:52] Tracy: Well, if you haven’t read The Power by Rhonda Byrne, I think that that one’s perfect in terms of attitude. Anything by Bob Procter, I absolutely love. I started by being a coaching client of his for 13 months before I decided to become a facilitator for his course, so I think that he is a really great mentor. But there are great mentors in the direct selling industry as well. You can also read books and do online courses through people like Eric Worre. They have great advice in terms of applying really good business techniques and routines to this particular industry. [17:30] Jen: Do you have a mentor or someone that you look up to that helps you in your business? [17:35] Tracy: I do and I really think that it’s important that even when you become a mentor to others that you still always have your own mentor. So I always have several at one particular time. At the moment, I have Andrew Roberts for my traditional business. He has a program called the F Way. I also have Upline Diamonds in my business and what I would say is that it’s really important to find a mentor who really has the same values as you. You want to enjoy what you do and you want to feel like it’s in alignment with who you are and what’s important to you. So there are going to be lots of different ways to do this business. You will see lots of different examples of how to do it. But if you can really resonate with someone and relate to them, then I would actually choose them as your mentor. For me personally, I really align myself with my Upline Diamonds who are heart centred and they mentor with the a servant heart. [18:32] Jen: What is the one thing that makes you the most excited about your business or the direct selling industry right now? What makes you, like, smile or laugh, when you think about it? [18:43] Tracy: Oh, that is such a great question because I absolutely love developing people. It’s the most exciting thing for me. And when someone has a shift or a breakthrough, I just feel like my heart’s going to burst. And at the moment I have a wonderful friend in my business who has had a magnificent shift in her self-belief. And her business is suddenly going crazy. So she has taken the same action for the past three years but she hasn’t had that full belief in herself. She’s gone to that next level in self-belief and now she is having all these people ring her up wanting to join her business. So she’s such a great example of attitude and self-belief and that just really makes my heart sing. [19:32] Jen: I can really understand why that would make you smile. That’s a really lovely story.
