We’re slipping back in time to 1999 again this week for our second edition of 1999 Week, and our fourth edition of People’s Choice week. These two films were the third and fourth most popular choices in our polls, and make for a really wonderful pairing. ‘Magnolia’ (1999) confused and tested us with its labyrinthine 24hr plot with inter-tangled, fractured narratives, and ‘Jawbreaker’ delighted with its unique pairing of dark and camp. Both of these films SCREAM the 90s, and honestly, we couldn’t be happier. This week we hit up our master list and committed to doing two big ones that we REALLY should have seen. Two films that were wildly different. And little did we know that we’d find resonances across them both… and here we have Underdog Week. ‘Rocky’ (1976) and ‘Legally Blonde’ (2001); two films about (contextually speaking) an underdog who we have no chance but to root for as they overcome ridiculous hurdles and display incredible tenacity and discover what really matters. This is People’s Choice Week Vol. 3, but more notably the first episode in a new series we’ve started where we watch films from 1999 - one of, arguably, the greatest years of cinema. We kicked things off with a poll across all our socials of 8 films that neither of us had seen and the two that were clearly at the top of everyone’s wishlist were ‘Being John Malkovich’ (1999) and ‘Cruel Intentions’ (1999). We’re still in lockdown and we’re tackling two films by the great man himself this week: Steven Spielberg. Patrick has shockingly never seen  ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ (1982) before, and neither Patrick nor Emma have seen the chilling and legendary ‘Jaws’ (1975), but this week we watch ‘em both. Of course, we can’t help but talk about Catholicism (again), Patrick gets his first ‘jab’ mid-episode, and we talk about all sorts of random shit, but this is a good one folks, we lock in to our movie nerd-dom properly this week. Well, Covid done got us again girl. We’ve been locked down, but a silly pandemic isn’t gonna get in the way of us talking shit, so we bought a second microphone, set up Emma in 3 different rooms in her house, ultimately settling on the backseat of a car as a recording studio, and struggled for 90min to get semi-podcast quality recorded conversation while in different houses. But it was WORTH IT because this week’s films were bangers, Disney’s ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ (1996) and Dreamworks’ ‘The Prince of Egypt’ (1998) - two huge vaguely religiously themed animated family features that Emma somehow missed seeing. Two very contrasting films, which we love, one from either side of the millennium. This week we paid a visit to the oeuvre of auteur director Christopher Nolan. We're both fans of his work, but there are a couple Emma hadn't seen yet. First we veered out of our comfort zone to watch 'The Dark Knight' (2008) (after watching 2005's 'Batman Begins' for homework), and then back to something more aligned to our regular programming to watch 'Inception' (2010). That's 454 minutes (7hrs 34min) of cinema, folks. We are tired. But some excellent discoveries were made! Who would have known that Batman had something to do with Bats, and that Christopher and Jonathan Nolan are not just brothers but actually the same person! . As a treat to Emma for getting through two very scary movies last episode, this week we watched her two favourite movies, which Patrick has never seen and has been deliberately been putting off watching to antagonise her; ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (1981) and ‘Back to the Future’ (1985). This episode brings with it a great deal of fascinating, intellectually stimulating discussion about SpaghettiOs, the ins and outs of famous tantrums from both testaments of the Bible, and just what exactly a Blu-ray Disc is, as well as a detailed update on the failings of Patrick’s love life.
