Carol Rosenstein: Creating Musical Support Groups for Individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurological disorders
In this episode, Dr. Carol Rosenstein, co-founder and Executive Officer of Music Mends Minds, talks about her inspiring work creating musical support groups for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and other neurological disorders. Dr. Carol Port Rosenstein, is an educator and pioneer in the field of holistic mind-body health. After a career as a chiropractor, she became interested in total mind-body health and acquired a Master’s in Clinical Psychology to help her further delve into alternative and complementary medicine. Her thesis regarded the objectification of the inner child as a possible source of psychosomatic illness, which if addressed correctly can unlock the elixir that is part of the healing potion to reverse dis-ease/disease, when caught on an early continuum. This is what fueled her passion for the arts and its ability to heal the body and mind. For this reason, she became very interested in the power of music as a form of acoustic art to heal the mind and body. .fusion-gallery-1 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;} Music Mends Minds is a nonprofit that creates musical support groups for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, traumatic brain injury, PTSD and other neurological disorders. Emily and Cat each delivered a child who was stillborn. Heather delivered two who were stillborn, and a third who died an hour after she was born. The world never had the honor of getting to know Low, Catherine, Joseph, Sarah and Mary. Baby Bundles has become their tender legacy – “A gift from our little angels,” Heather says. Baby Bundles provides a bag full of necessities – baby outfits, blankets and the like – to mothers in need as they leave the hospital with their newborn. The contents of each bag are worth about $305, helping families begin parenthood on the right foot. Since starting in 2010, Baby Bundles has delivered bags to families in and around Charlotte through our community partners. OUR MISSION To provide baby essentials to families in financial need in the Charlotte area, helping them get a positive start with their baby. OUR OBJECTIVE To present clothing and other baby essentials to underprivileged families in the Charlotte area. Baby Bundles partners with community agencies and local hospitals to identify families in financial need who will receive a bundle of clothing, blankets, children’s books and developmental toys. Our bundle meets both an emergent need but will last well over the first year of life, supporting basic clothing needs, promoting an infant’s brain growth and development, and fostering caregiver and infant bonding, all of which helps give the newborn a positive start to life. Meghann Gunderman Sehorn: Offering Vulnerable Children the Opportunity to Succeed through Quality Education
In this episode, Meghann Gunderman Sehorn, founder and Executive Director of The Foundation For Tomorrow, talks about her inspiring work offering vulnerable children the opportunity to succeed through quality education. The Charlotte, NC native credits her parents with her entrepreneurial and philanthropic spirit. At just 12 years old Meghann wrote and published an athletic log and diary for children and used the proceeds to fund her first non-profit, The Charlotte Youth Sports Foundation, to provide athletic opportunities for disadvantaged youth in North Carolina. Later, as part of her studies at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, Meghann traveled to East Africa to do research and volunteer. LWB monitors their programs very carefully with local managers who visit the children and can quickly provide extra nutrition, medical care or other supplies as needed. Saving our first life: LWB began in 2003 to help save the life of one tiny boy in China. Following his successful heart surgery, we realized that nothing is impossible when passionate and dedicated people come together to impact the lives of children. Our model: From the very beginning of LWB, we’ve worked in partnership with local citizens on the ground to change the lives of vulnerable children. Each project around the globe is run by people who grew up in-country, as the best solutions to the challenges children face are developed in the local community. Linda Rozell-Shannon: Advocating for the Accurate Diagnosis and Appropriate Treatment of Vascular Birthmarks
In this episode, Dr. Linda Rozell-Shannon, President and founder of the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation, talks about her inspiring work advocating for the accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment of Vascular Birthmarks. Linda Rozell-Shannon, PhD is the President and founder of the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation. She has her Phd in Education, her Master of Science in Health Education, and has been a freelance writer and analyst for over 25 years. In 1994, after her daughter, Christine Mary Shannon, was diagnosed with a hemangioma, Linda began researching and writing information on vascular birthmarks, creating what is now known as the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation (VBF). In 1995, Linda met Dr. Milton Waner of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. After he successfully removed her daughter’s hemangioma in a single out-patient surgical procedure, she partnered with Dr. Waner to write the only book for parents on birthmarks. Since its inception in 1994, VBF has successfully networked thousands of children and adults into treatment, sponsored significant research, educated physicians and affected family members about the diagnosis and treatment of vascular birthmarks, and established chapters all over the world. .fusion-gallery-8 .fusion-gallery-image {border:0px solid #f6f6f6;} The Vascular Birthmarks Foundation (VBF) is an international charitable organization that networks those affected by a vascular birthmark, anomaly, tumor or syndrome to the appropriate medical professionals for evaluation and treatment. VBF also educates physicians and affected families regarding treatment options, supports relevant research, mobilizes medical missions, and empowers those living with vascular birthmarks. One in ten children are born with a vascular birthmark, or 400,000, each year in the United States (based on the 2003 census). Of these infants, 1 in 10, or 40,000 are born with a vascular birthmark that will require the opinion of a medical specialist. There are two categories of vascular birthmarks: hemangiomas, which are the most common tumor of infancy, and vascular malformations. These two categories, while related, are very different. It is very important to know the difference because the treatment is different depending on the lesion type. Traditional medical protocol in years past was to allow these potentially disfiguring and dangerous lesions to grow and “wait” for regression or involution to occur. New data indicates that most of these lesions do not regress to a cosmetically acceptable appearance, and will, therefore, require some form of corrective surgery. As a result, there is a concerted effort on the part of several prominent physicians and research specialists to change the old “benign neglect” protocol to require more aggressive early intervention. Additionally, almost all benign vascular lesions have been called “hemangiomas.” However, many are actually vascular malformations. It is important to have an accurate diagnosis since hemangiomas will regress but vascular malformations will continue to grow. VBF is dedicated to provide the most accurate and up to date information on the proper diagnosis and treatment of hemangiomas and other vascular birthmarks. This information is not only important for parents, it is critical for physicians and other health care providers. Our work has three objectives: Lack of access to soap remains a critical factor in fighting the spread of preventable diseases worldwide. In some areas of the developing world, only 1% of households have soap for handwashing. Eco-Soap Bank seeks to address the critical need for hygiene. Working since 2014, Eco-Soap Bank has sustainably supplied more than 3.5 million people with soap and hygiene education. After collecting and sanitizing the soap, we coordinate with our network of humanitarian organizations working in remote regions of developing nations. These organizations share our mission to improve hygiene, and they work within their communities to create a positive shift in hygiene behavior. Together, we impart the tools and skills to keep people healthy for generations. The demand for improved hygiene in the developing world is immense, and much remains to be done. You can help support Eco-Soap Bank by donating, by getting involved, or by spreading the word. Ray Zahab: Educating and Empowering through Expeditions
In this episode, Ray Zahab, founder and Expeditions Director of impossible2Possible, talks about the charity’s innovative work using experiential learning-based expeditions to educate and empower students across the globe. Ray Zahab is a Canadian Explorer, ultra-distance runner and Founder of non-profit impossible2Possible. A recent recipient of the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada, Ray is an Explorer in Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. In 2015 Canadian Geographic recognized Ray as one of Canada’s Top Explorers. He has run 17,000+km across the world’s deserts, and unsupported expeditions in some of the coldest places on the planet. On November 1, 2006, former “pack a day smoker” turned ultra-runner Ray Zahab and two friends set out on an expedition to cross the Sahara Desert by foot. 111 days and 7,500 kms after leaving the coast of Senegal, Africa they completed their journey by stepping into the Red Sea. The expedition had the trio running an average of 70kms a day without a single day of rest, for 111 days. National Geographic tracked the expedition and the documentary film Running The Sahara was created to raise awareness for the drinking water crisis in North Africa. After witnessing and learning about the water crisis, Ray decided to leverage his future adventures to help raise awareness and funding for causes that he supports and believes in. In 2008, Ray founded impossible2Possible (i2P) an organization that aims to inspire and educate youth through adventure learning, inclusion and participation in expeditions.
