episode 0085 - bonus: derek richmond (from Dropouts) top 3 films of 2022
notes on a recording:  All the way back in episode 0045, titled "Music to my Ears" I talked with Derek Richmond from the band DROPOUTS for the first time. Well, he's back and top of that DROPOUTS have a new album, Off the Leash (2022), that is now available on Spotify. What's really cool about this album is that they used a different lead guitarist for each of their songs. How cool is that! Derek also shares his inspiration behind their album cover.  In this week's bonus episode we get into a ton of stuff. Not only does Derek come by to talk about his three favorite films of the year (All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, and Banshees of Inisherin) but he shares a story about his time at Pretty Bird and DANIELS (Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert). We begin our episode talking about the director duo, hot off 11 Academy Award nominations for their film "Everything Everywhere All At Once." This leads us to Derek's top 3, and in no particular ranking. I haven't talked about Edward Burger's All Quiet on the Western Front on the show yet. I watched it recently and was deeply moved and disturbed about the content of human callousness. It is a beautifully shot, gruesome and de-moralizing World War 1 epic that reminds me of a cross between "1917" and "Saving Private Ryan." This is a German film that can be found on Netflix. Next up, we talk another film that I haven't talked much about on the show, "The Batman." A film just as dark and gritty as the aforementioned WWI film, this was one of the best adaptations of the character I have ever seen. It reminded me a lot of the golden age of Batman comics in the late 80s, early 90s. I find out in this episode, that Derek collects comic books, so I see how he comes to appreciate the Matt Reeves film from a comics perspective and with an understanding of Batman as a detective. This film really captures the feel of some of the darker stories like Jeph Loeb's "The Long Halloween" and Frank Miller's Batman Year One. This one is also on HBO MAX. His last film in the top 3, "Banshees of Inisherin," which has made most of my guests top films of the year lists. If you haven't seen this film about the end of a friendship, hop on over to HBO MAX, because this film is seriously good despite it's deceptively simple premise. Of course, we shoutout the great performances from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleason, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon-- these performances alone is reason enough to watch Martin McDonagh's well-written tale.  And lastly, before the show's wrap up Derek gets into some honorable mentions (and one dishonorable mention) that include: Dio: Dreamers Never Die, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Northman, Hustle, and Emily the Criminal. Definitely, take a listen to this episode to get our full thoughts on and all these films! Now: off to the next film!  Dial F for Film is a podcast about the love of movies and host's -- J. Carlos Menjivar -- attempt to watch 1001 movies before he dies. A lover of lists and film, Carlos is a firm believer that all film lists should be tackled with one goal in mind: completion. Each episode features one guest and five movies from the massive list, compiled into themed lists by the host. Guests each week will select one category without any prior knowledge as to what films are included. Once a category is chosen, Carlos reveals the five films and the viewing begins. episode 0082 - bonus: ’riget (the kingdom)’ [1994] ep.1
Around the end of last year, Aaron and I began talking about doing an episode on Lars von Trier's "Riget" as the release of the third installment in that series, The Kingdom Exodus, was airing on Mubi. We had talked about doing this episode since 2021, which is when he lent me his DVD copy, as it was not available to stream anywhere at the time. I didn't even know what this was and while Aaron was going through the "1001" list for potential episodes that is when I found out about Riget (through his discovery of the film being on the list); and although the film version of Riget is in the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" we will be talking about the 4-part series, in 3 episodes. This is part 1. If you haven't seen the show, or it's been a minute, we suggest you hop on Mubi watch episode 1, and follow along. It's a great show that I knew nothing about and deeply enjoyed. There are plans to do bonus episodes for Riget II, The Kingdom Exodus, and the 4 hour film version of Riget throughout the earlier half of 2023. Look out for these as they will drop sporadically throughout our conclusion of our ongoing series: A-Z.  Dial F for Film is a podcast about the love of movies and host's -- J. episode 0076 - ’l is for little big man’ w/ aaron lowe
You don't know how long I've had this episode in the pocket and ready to go. It went from being recorded on my desktop in the summer, the file then took a long vacation on my laptop, only for me to end up editing the file on my desktop in the fall. Listen: the summer was long and rough, but the new Dial F for Film studio is up and running! This the last of the overdue episodes I have left, however, since moving to the new place I have already recorded 2 more upcoming episodes! Stay tuned, as this stuff is all dropping soon.  This episode features a favorite of the show, aaron lowe, from Incredible Two-Headed Podcast, and we talk about revisionist western 'little big man' starring Dustin Hoffman, directed by Arthur Penn. This is part of our a-z series.  Dial F for Film is a podcast about the love of movies and host J. Carlos Menjivar's attempt to watch 1001 movies before he dies. episode 0075 - dashboard confessional 1: avatar (2009)
This was supposed to be an ongoing series over the months of august and September however recording and editing did not go as planned; I mention in this episode that a-z is on hiatus, however, this is no longer true as I am releasing L is for Little Big Man (recorded over the summer) this weekend and recording the next two episodes: Mad Max with aaron lowe from the incredible two-headed podcast and network with Diana Bucio this weekend. The new recording space is up and I am determined to get through this series. For now, enjoy this short episode I recorded with long time friend and friend of the show Ruben Núño-Ortiz inside my car after a screening of “avatar” at a local amc. Avatar is also in the “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die” 2017 edition. Enjoy the episode!

episode 0074 - ’k is for klute’ with james harbaugh
after a cruel summer host j. carlos menjivar and dial f for film is back bay-bay! always a fun guest, james harbaugh is back for more. this episode was recorded shortly after 'the jerk' episode over the summer, and due to a number of unforeseen circumstances i couldn't get to editing, but here it is, in all its glory: 'k is for klute' (1971). this is a fun short one, where we talk about the classic neo-noir thriller from alan j. pakula. this is a first time watch for both. next week sees the return of guest champ aaron lowe (from "incredible two-headed podcast") and we will be discussing Little Big Man (1970) in "L is for Little Big Man." a-z will take a short hiatus after the release of the letter L episode. let's call it a mid-alphabet break. the show won't take another break, but I will be releasing shorter episodes with a single guest (Ruben Nuno-Ortiz) and we will discuss other films in the "1001 movies you must see before you die" list, without any real theme. these will be short and fun episodes with one of my oldest and bestest friends, and someone i share many theater experiences with. stay tuned as we finish this year off strong and finish the damn alphabet already!
