ep 001: bad choices pt. 1
the remastered, reissued on vinyl, deluxe edition of deadheirrecords: episode 1 of the pod in which our heroes make a first attempt at sitting on their couch and talking to each other, talk shop about what gave them the dumb idea to apply to juilliard back in the day, dissect some of the early bummers, and set the stage for later, even bigger bummers.

ep 036: actress/singer
hi all. back with a surprise episode for the new year. i go on a long monologue about acting and performing music. i hope it rings true to ya'll in some way, because it helped me crystallize a lot of ideas i was having about performing, and how i always felt uncomfortable with it. and i truly think acknowledging all the roles a person can play will help develop some empathy for our beloved performers, be they of any artistic medium. hope ya'll are having a solid 2019 so far. xoxo talk to you soon.

ep 035: crazy talk
what do patsy cline and gnarls barkley have in common? they both wrote a song called crazy and we analyze both and decide who wore it better. how is the word crazy best represented in musical language? what is the infinite in music and how can you represent it? why can i listen to the gnarls barkley crazy until i go blind? who exactly is HW plainfield? how many homer simpsons can you pack into a backing choir? we love you all keep hitting us up with your thots and opinions. we'll be back in two thursdays with some more killer content. xoxo deadheirrecords

ep 034: radio drama
hi folks it's an episode about the aught's favorite hipsters the decemberists! every once in awhile it's healthy to acknowledge that our personal heritage is made up of sad white guys, so we take a listen to a song i've been hearing on the radio a lot called "sucker's prayer." we talk timelessness, "the nihilistic happy", nostalgia, harold and maude, and longmont potion castle, somehow. see everybody in two weeks! xoxo dhr

ep 032: a brief history of every idea ive ever had
holy moly does anyone remember "all for love" from the three musketeers? it came out in 1993, and rod stewart, bryan adams, and sting really go hogs deep in this one. we talk about it for longer than anyone arguably should. but boy oh boy what a pretty song. ever wondered what dependability sounds like in its platonic ideal? this song. i hope you all enjoy. pics of the analysis on our instagram: https://www.instagram.com/deadheirrecords/ stay tough everyone xoxo deadheirrecords
130 minutes | Jun 7, 2018
ep 031: cheap yugoslavian lumber
the boys return from their break and analyze ty dolla sign's "don't judge me." anonymous 1 attempts to settle beef with his judging peers, anonymous 2 takes beef with rappers who get stuck, and we speak at length about the desire to fill up space after you sing in music. THEN THERE'S A 7/8 OUTRO. come for the jokes--stay for the compound meters. pics of our analysis can be found on our instagram. shoot us an email, tweet, or leave us a comment on soundcloud. tell a buddy and let's get dead heir records rolling for the summer months! happy thursday, billions! xoxo dhr

ep 030: like pears
in which dhr dissects madonna's "like a prayer" and wonders why it's just so goddamn good. this is the kinda song that makes u wanna pull grandpa off his deathbed and get him to dance with too!! we talk the use of slow introductions in songs, cellular melodic motives, gospel choir, the throwing off of sexual repression in favor of having a party, and how this song coming on in any situation gives the potential for a musical song and dance number to start. a link to our written analysis can be found here: www.instagram.com/deadheirrecords/ this is our 30th episode!! show us some love while we celebrate by birdwatching and watching horror movies! leave us a review on itunes, tell a buddy, and hit us up at deadheirrecords@gmail.com happy thursday billions. xoxo

ep 029: it's quite finished
introducing anonymous number 5 who joins us for a special cast to talk about sampling, how he got into music, beat making, what you listen to and look for in music when you're not a big music theory nerd. and bioshock, jay z, and ramses shaffy. check out his "a remix, brother" on our channel here, which is featured in the intro and outra to this pod: https://soundcloud.com/deadheirrecords/a-remix-brother-uncut we were pumped to get a new voice in the room and introduce them to everyone. hope everyone has a happy thursday. xoxo
104 minutes | May 3, 2018
ep 028: welcome 2 buffet town
we dare each other to listen to a stupid ass song and wind up getting stuck in margaritaville for almost 2 hours. what an intense song about alcoholism and giving up. one of us had never heard it b4 and it kinda blew their mind. shout outs to jimmy for making an entire industry out of one stupid song. go buy some of his key lime pie filling mix. but all in all a very cohesive song that is almost respectably self-aware. oh and then we go on a tangent and trash country music for a long time. our bad. let us know why you like country. or jimmy buffet. idk. we'll be back. xoxo

ep 027: in which beethoven doesnt try 2 sell u viagra
what is there to like about classical music? we talk about what it actually has going for it, and what we still hold very dear 2 our hearts about it, despite being just so aggro in this podcast series about its failings. turns out it can be pretty cool if u r interested. most of the piano music in this episode is performed by anonymous #2. what are some of your favorite pieces? what got you into classical music? hit us up at deadheirrecords@gmail.com or give us a follow on instagram and let us know what you think. happy thursday y'all. xoxo

ep 026: the person your dad said he was
what is being intentional in music? does an improvisation or freestyle tossed off in 2 minutes have just as much going for it as a string quartet that had months of work poured into it? we discuss different genres of music, and the role that improvisation vs. intention plays in each of them, focusing a lot on hip-hop as compared to classical music. as usual. what are the pros of obsessing? we don't know. but we have fun talking about it. it's more interesting than this description, i promise. pics of our weird thing that prevents our bedroom from being a bedroom available here: https://www.instagram.com/deadheirrecords/ xoxo deadheirrecords

ep 025: tater totsick
the boys talk about one of their favorite songs of all time. that came out when we were but kiddos. and made us all feel things. it's a wild ride. i hope we don't get taken down cuz i really like this one. welcome to our new guest who you all haven't heard before. it's nice to get not our voices on this thing sometimes. THERE'S SO MUCH CHROMATICISM in this song. it's NUTS. go listen to it more. follow us on instagram and twitter. and shoot us an email at deadheirrecords@gmail.com xoxo
118 minutes | Apr 5, 2018
ep 024: fun times to punch holes
spring break has ended and the boys are back at it. we do a hit disciple this week on a psychedelic golden oldie from 1980's "underwater moonlight" called kingdom of love. we also get incredibly hung up on this one guitar riff for like 20 minutes that for the life of us we can't write down. so enjoy that part. we also talk about how blues guitar is dope. and how lyrics can make or break a song. sorry the editor is still a little sick during this recording. enjoy listening to him sniffle. link to our instagram here that has some pics of the music: https://www.instagram.com/deadheirrecords/
80 minutes | Mar 15, 2018
ep 023: it's not a competition
music competitions tend to be where classical musicians lose interest in playing anymore. but they also are the so-called place where classical musicians get their big break. but they are also just inherently stupid and misguided. so what's the big deal? are music competitions just misguided nationalism? are they for parents? for teachers? they sure don't seem to be for music. we talk our own experiences and then break down some misconceptions about classical music competitions, where they started, and what they got wrong. follow us on ig: instagram.com/deadheirrecords/ and twitter: twitter.com/deadheirrecords email us: deadheirrecords@gmail.com happy thursday everyone. xoxo
105 minutes | Mar 8, 2018
ep 022: not sued yet
dj rashad is on the brain. and chicago footwork. and we talk about "i don't give a fuck" from 2013 album double cup. this episode has some real intense rhythms in it. we realize they are much harder to understand and notate than melody, pitch, and harmony. but we try any way. hope you all enjoy. check out all dj rashad's music--his songs are modern masterpieces. our page of analysis can be found on our ig: www.instagram.com/deadheirrecords/ happy thursday everyone. stay tough. xoxo deadheirrecords

ep 021: i don't want the devil
we like video games. and we like video game music. so we each picked a good track of video game music to talk about. they are ninja gaiden: act 3 part 1, sonic 3: angel island act 2, and neir automata: memories of dust. if you all like video games too, you should go check out 8bit music theory: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeZLO2VgbZHeDcongKzzfOw which was a big inspiration for the channel. our lil analysis can be found on our ig: https://www.instagram.com/deadheirrecords/ shoot us a message if you like video games and music. and tell us why. and tell us your lyrics for your favorite games. and remember we don't want the devil but we NEED the devil xoxo
83 minutes | Feb 22, 2018
ep 020: canadian denim demon
we talk about an old favorite song by leonard cohen called "suzanne." and we get really confused by the weird ass switch from 6/8 to 4/4 in the beginning of the song. and then we theorize about pronouns in music and what they mean in this day and age. what happened to the chorus that makes up our chorus? who is you and who am i in a love song? do i really love any of you? does anyone really love me? leave us a rating and a review if you like us it means a lot and helps a bunch >:) xoxo deadheirrecords
97 minutes | Feb 15, 2018
ep 019: a cup of water in a giant circle
so we analyzed a song none of us like. as an experiment. to see if it would make us like it. it didn't. not gonna mention its title because there's a very good chance it gets taken down. we might be a little hard on this song, but you know what? anthony kiedis has $120 million according to some google in 2012, so he can handle 3 boys making fun of them in their spare room in the bronx. thanks to our special guest for joining us once again--listen to his other episode on the talking heads a few pods back! we don't like white boy soft rock funk rap punk jam music from the early 2000's. back to songs we actually do like next week. hopefully this doesn't get us taken down. pray for us. xoxo happy thursday deadheirrecords
