Hugh O'Brian, Women in Comics, and singer Ann McCue on the Next *Dave White Presents*!
"Wyatt Earp, Wyatt Earp, brave, courageous and bold.
Long live his name, and long live his glory,
And long may his story be told."
From 1955 to 1961, and on countless reruns ever since, millions of fans have come to know these lines from the theme song for *The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp* starring Hugh O'Brian. Now, the story behind the scenes has finally been told in a new memoir, *Hugh O'Brian, or What's Left of Him*.
On Tues. Jan. 27, the legendary lawman himself comes to *DWP* to talk about his most famous character, but there's much more to his story. Did you know, at age 17, he was and remains the youngest drill sergeant in Marine history? Did you know O'Brian coined the phrase, "ooh rah"? Did you know O'Brian paid a price for his Wyatt Earp role, losing much of his hearing due to the fact he couldn't wear earplugs during gun battles? Or that he was the last actor shot by John Wayne in the Duke's final film, *The Shootist*? Or that after a jungle meeting with famed humanitarian Albert Sweitzer, O'Brian founded the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program in 1958? It's quite an honor for *DWP* to feature one of the last of the great Western stars who's not only brave and bold onscreen, but quite an impressive man in his own right.
*DWP* switches gears when Dave White sits down with Marisa Stotter, director of the surprising new documentary, *She Makes Comics*. Many comics fans don't know women have been writing, drawing, and reading comics since the medium’s beginnings in the late 19th century. *She Makes Comics* is the first film to bring together the most influential women of the comics world, and we think any fan of the medium will learn just how significant the behind-the-scenes female superheroines really were.
Of course, *DWP* always features hot, classic music, and our Jan. 27 show will introduce you to Australian-born songstress and multi-instrumentalist Anne McCue. She's about to release her 6th studio album,*Blue Sky Thinkin'*, where the bluesy triple-threat musician channels the jazz players and singers that have inspired her since her childhood. Think Billy Holiday, Charlie Christian, Memphis Minnie, Peggy Lee, Cab Calloway, Irving Berlin, and Django Reinhardt.
As you'll hear on *DWP*, McCue not only sings songs that take you back to the swing era, plays choice guitar licks showcasing her prowess on both acoustic and electric axes, but she wrote all the tunes on *Blue Sky Thinkin'*. Join Ann and Wes Britton and find out why some think this album is “a bona fide collection of new standards for a generation that hungers for the good stuff.”
