SPELLBOUND | AFTER SUNSET | CUBANARAMA | 9-25-2021
Guests: Paul Thomas and Bobby Moon, Spellbound Band 9-25-2021 After Sunset is the upcoming album from Los Angeles band, SPELLBOUND. The group was formed in in the 1990s by Paul “Pablo” Thomas (keys and guitars) and Bobby Moon (vocals and percussion) and their sound is an intriguing hybrid of blue-eyed soul, AOR, pop, Latino dance and of course the “California sound”. Hear all that and more on the eleven tracker that is ‘After Sunset’ which features two new singers – Jenny G and Anna Moore. The material is all new and penned by Thomas and Moon save for a cover of the Ohio Players’ ‘Heaven Must Be Like This’. The artwork and the band’s background might suggest that ‘After Sunset’ is a typical Californian album. But Moon and Thomas (both local social activists) have infused the music with socially conscious elements while some of the lyrical themes have a darker tone than you’d expect from a typical West Coast album. After Sunset will be released via the band’s own Selfish label on October 1st with limited copies available on CD. That limited availability of the physical record reflects the band’s ethos re. packaging and waste. The few CDs that will be available will use recycled material in all their various elements.

STEVE PICHAN | IS THIS AMERICA | CUBANARAMA | 4-29-2021
Guest: Steve Pichan 4-29-2021 A prolific artist whose musical expression of past, present and current events will leave you examining your own beliefs and trying to understand the world around you. Pichan began writing music and lyrics as a young boy. Over the years his focus has been more “story” styled songs as demonstrated in “You Don’t Know Che”! about Che Guevara, chief exectutioner during the late 50’s and early 60’s in Cuba under Castro. Che is celebrated by celebrities and others that don his image on clothing and jewelry. He was also glorified in the movie “Motorcycle Diaries” directed by Robert Redford. Che was responsible for the execution of hundreds, if not thousands, of Cubans who resisted the iron fisted rule of Fidel Castro. Other songs: The day God Laughed, Leaving Detroit, Am I Here Already?  “Bob” Iron Man, shines the llight on the goodness of everyday Americans when faced with a tragedy such as 9/11. “Look Away” written for the documentary “Our Vietnam Generation.

Brandy Vaughan
Brandy Vaughan, an ex-Merck sales executive, is taking on the world’s most powerful industry by educating people worldwide about the dangers of pharmaceutical products, including vaccines and unnecessary medical treatments. Things that are literally killing us. Brandy founded Learn The Risk, a 501(c)3 educational non-profit, as a response to the corruption she saw from the inside when she sold a drug for Merck that was killing tens of thousands of people. She left the pharmaceutical industry and felt she had no choice but to speak out when she realized the industry’s main agenda is to keep us all sick for profit.  In her words: “My mission in life has become clear: to create a healthier world by educating people on the real RISK of pharmaceutical products. And EMPOWER people to take back their health from an industry that profits only when people are ‘sick’.” You will hear how doctors hide important information from their patients, how the government pays out MILLIONS to people with serious side effects from vaccinations secretly, and how many common health issues could actually be a vaccine reaction. Everything your doctor won’t tell you, but you need to know. Listen to Brandy expose the eye-opening truth behind the “health” care system and tips to stay healthy naturally. www.LearnTheRisk.org Facebook: www.facebook.com/LearnTheRisk twitter: @LearnTheRisk Instagram: #LearnTheRisk YouTube: www.YouTube.com/LearnTheRisk

"CUBA, ADIOS" BY LORENZO PABLO MARTINEZ
Between 1960 and 1962 more than 14,000 Cuban children escaped Fidel Castro’s communist regime as part of an airlift known as Operación Pedro Pan. LORENZO PABLO MARTÍNEZ was one of these children. In CUBA, ADIÓS: A Young Man's Journey to Freedom, Martínez vividly recounts his participation in a program that bridged two different cultures and achieved great political significance over the years. At eighteen, he forfeits a music scholarship to Prague to accept an unknown future of exile in America without knowing the language, money to pursue an education, or family to help. Plagued by guilt around his sexual identity and having to care for a younger brother, Martínez forges ahead to become the composer of his future; later he opens the doors that enable his sisters and parents to join him after a harrowing sojourn in Mexico City. With the same determination, he attends college and pursues a music education, obtaining a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, then a doctorate from Columbia University. Even after his music compositions are published and performed on television and at international festivals, Martínez feels restless and spiritually unfulfilled. Until, that is, he is able to define the true music of his freedom. CUBA, ADIÓS is a poignant, thoughtful account of one boy’s survival and self-acceptance, written with unflinching honesty and a wry humor.

PALM TREES IN THE SNOW by Gloria Maria Strassburger
Co Host: Fernan Hernandez, author of The Cubans: Our Legacy in the United States: A collective biography In the author's words: Havana, 1939—The glamorous capital city of an alluring Caribbean island, the year that Rolando Fernández and Ninina Perea meet and fall in love. Strassburger begins her story with her parents’ courtship in the golden years of pre-Castro Cuba. Her memoir recounts how her father’s mental collapse and the communist revolution of 1959 uprooted her privileged childhood, both physically and emotionally. While providing substantial background on Fidel Castro’s political revolt, Strassburger focuses on her family’s experiences: The appropriation of their wealth and properties by the rebel regime. How families were torn apart as children were taken from their parents, forced to undergo communist indoctrination in Russia. Strassburger narrowly escaped such a fate through Operation Peter Pan, one of the largest political exoduses of children in history. Fearing for her future, her parents sent her out of Cuba—alone—in 1961. She relates the terror of being separated from her family and living in a foreign country without them. With affecting detail, Strassburger depicts her family’s disintegration as her father spiraled into schizophrenia and communism forced them into exile. They left behind their loved ones, their homes, and their identities to face the hardships of a new life in the United States. Palm Trees in the Snow is a family’s story of love, sacrifice, and survival. It is the author’s tribute to a way of life lost forever and the embracing of a new one in America. NICHOLAS BRENNAN | ZEUS // LOS ULTIMOS FRIKIS | CUBANARAMA | 12-4-2013
Guest: Nicholas Brennan 12-4-2013 HAVANA, Cuba—On the margins of this isolated country better known for cigars and Castro, a vibrant heavy metal scene flourishes. The most iconic stars are the members of Zeus, the country's oldest heavy metal band. They've performed in Havana since the 1980s, when this American-influenced music was officially banned by the Castro government. The long-haired rockers (called "freakies") were thrown in jail and concerts were broken up by state police. Thirty years later, rock music is tolerated, but barely. A government bureaucracy called the Agency of Rock controls Cuba's heavy metal scene. Every concert and every record must be cleared with the Agency’s director of Rock. It's a sign of the changing situation in Cuba, but it's also an absurd position for the country's heavy metal musicians. To play their music, Zeus and their diehard fans must fight to be true to themselves within the confines set by the Cuban government. "People always listen to the hardest music because it is a way of reaffirming their passion and liberty against everything that is imposed on them," says Ivan Vera, the guitarist for Zeus. "That, I believe, is the reason for heavy metal." American filmmaker, Nicholas Brennan, has spent the past four years capturing Zeus's story and the broader history of heavy metal in Cuba in the feature-length documentary film: "Los Ultimos Frikis" with over 120 hours of footage filmed inside of Cuba.
