Tinamarie Clark Talks Dissecting Shame Responses and Her Shift Stirrer Method
On this episode of Courageous Wellness, we sit down with Tinamarie Clark. Tinamarie is the author and creator of the Shift Stirrer Method ™ a five-step mindfulness method to get our sh*t together and shift our perception. Tina’s path as a  Shift Stirrer™ traces back to her  roots. Raised in Section 8 housing by a single mother she felt branded by her circumstances and struggled with a persistent sense of shame and an all-consuming feeling of “other.” These thoughts and feeling were overwhelming, and at times debilitating. To the outside world, she presented an entirely different person: fierce, defensive, and combative. This was her family’s code of honor and  most deeply-held belief: that if they were feared, no one could hurt them.  On this episode we have a deep discussion about Tinamarie's personal journey and how to apply the Shift Stirrer Method to create radical transformation in our own lives. Tinamarie also curates conversations for others to share their own stir stories™, leading them to deeper connections with self and the world around them.  We are grateful to Tinamarie for sharing her beautiful and empowering story and hope it inspires you as we enter the New Year!  To learn more about Tinamarie and the Shift Stirrer Method, visit: https://www.shiftstirrer.com or follow on instagram at @tinamarieclark Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review Courageous Wellness! Dr. Katrina Ubell Talks Yo-Yo Dieting, Emotional Eating, and Weight Loss for Busy Physicians
Today on the podcast we have a conversation with Dr. Katrina Ubell. For over a decade, Katrina yoyo dieted, lost and gained the same 40 pounds, and used food to cope with her emotions. This was all happening while she was working as a pediatrician in a busy private practice and raising three kids.  It wasn’t until Katrina learned how to manage her mind and develop, an intuitive approach to intermittent fasting that honors how our bodies were meant to function, that she was able to regain her energy and permanently lose 40 pounds without dieting, exercising until exhaustion, or restricting herself. She now works with other busy physicians, as a Master Certified life and weight loss coach. We have a conversation on emotional eating, creating personal food plans, tips for choosing the nutritious choice over the dopamine hit, quick fix, and body image. We do discuss weight loss heavily on this episode, so if that topic is triggering, tune back next week.  To learn more about Dr. Katrina Ubell you can visit: https://katrinaubellmd.comor follow her on instagram @coachkatrinaubellmd Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review Courageous Wellness! Sheron McFarlane, RN, Discusses Reversing a Diabetes Diagnosis and Connecting to Food, Self, and Community Through Gardening
Today on the podcast we welcome registered nurse and CW listener, Sheron MacFarlane. Sheron tells us her amazing story of how an inaccurate type one diabetes diagnosis at age 17 followed by years of up and down health issues inspired her to take her health (and blood sugar) into her own hands. Upon her own monitoring, she and her endocrinologist actually observed that she was a type 2 diabetic and that she had already begun reversing her diabetes holistically through the power of real food and small lifestyle changes. Sheron now has a business where she supports others to do the same.  One of the aspects of Sheron that is so inspirational is her connection to growing her own food. On this episode she shares with us all that she has learned from gardening, and the many ways in which her amazing garden serves herself, her family and even her community. At the end of this episode you are all going to want to go out and start your own gardens, and if you hop on over to her instagram feed @whatsheydid you will get all the inspiration you need! Charlotte Martin Shares Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Recovery and The Importance of Early Detection
For Breast Cancer Awareness month, this week we sit down with Charlotte Martin, breast cancer survivor and advocate. In October 2018, Charlotte was diagnosed with Stage 1 HER2 Breast Cancer at the age of 31. An extremely rare form of breast cancer, with a 1 in 10,000 chance of contraction at such a young age. Charlotte was able to detect it at an early stage, because she performed regular self breast exams. In the years leading up to her own diagnosis, her doctors had all declined to do mammogram checks, because she was quote “too young” and “healthy,” even though her own mother had suffered from Breast Cancer. What followed after her diagnosis was chemotherapy, IVF treatments, a double mastectomy -- and the large price tag and emotional toil that came with it all. We are so grateful to Charlotte for sharing her own experience and fighting for women to have early checks, being your own health advocate, and honor breast cancer awareness month.  To learn more about Charlotte you can get in touch on Instagram at @liveloveandboobs Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review Courageous Wellness! Lilly Brice on Māori Practices of Holistic Health and Well-Being
Today on the podcast we have a conversation with, Courageous Wellness listener, Lilly Brice. Lilly recently graduated from Bucknell University as a sociology and anthropology major. A kentucky native,  always drawn to cultural medicine, holistic health, and nutrition -- she spent 5 transformative months in New Zealand, conducting research on Māori culture, interviewing indigenous healers, and traveling to a healing Expo in the South Island. She wrote her honors thesis on Māori notions of holistic health and well-being -- which she shares with us today!  Drawing on contemporary anthropological approaches used by scholars of well-being and medical anthropology, Lilly, explores how indigenous healers in New Zealand blend “traditional” and “modern” elements to establish a creative and inclusive system. We discuss herbal treatments, ritual chanting, and ceremonies that encapsulate Māori cultural values and the impact of biomedicine and New-Age wellness approaches on indigenous healing. We are grateful to Lilly for sharing her own experience with the Courageous Wellness community today!  Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review Courageous Wellness!
