CGP Ep486 #YOJAY Why Do We Train?
I have a #YOJAY to ask myself. In other words, I have questions that run through my mind that need answering. The problem is that my answers are coming from my singular perspective. This perspective determines my beliefs and influences my actions. It is not until we are introduced to a different perspective that our beliefs can be altered. My question is, why do we train? Seriously! What are we training for. If you are not an athlete or have a job/hobby that requires physical exerction, why would we stress our bodies the way we do in the gym? I have a skewed viewpoint because i am a strength coach. I am like a drug dealer who only sees addicts and who gets high off his own supply. This limited perspective would have you think that the whole world lives this life or a version of this. Rarely do we take a step back and look at the other ways we can live our lives. Hopefully this episode will answer my question to myself. I also share some fun comedy club stories for those of you who ask for more behind the scenes stories about the life of a comic! CGP Ep485 What Are You Even Doing?
Do you even know why you do what you do? Usually its a product of what you are comfortable with due to the fact you have always done it that way. From your career to the exercises you choose in the gym. You do what you are already good at. I challenge you to look at your actions from the outside looking in and question everything. Remove the ego and be open to the idea that what you are doing may not be the right approach. I have always said that true strength comes from identifying your weaknesses and doing something about it. You will never identify your weakness if you don't allow yourself to be wrong. I always look to remove limitations before I add performance variables. I do this both in training athletes and mentoring my Mentorees. Do a deep dive into the why and then remove the performance barriers before adding anything to the mix. In training we do this via the physical screen/assessment. In my Mentorship we do it through the Home Study portion of the program. The key is asking the right questions to identify the weakness and understand why it exists. Every 5 years you need to throw out the old and bring in the new. From your fashion, business strategy, hobbies and way of thinking. Life is impermanent. It is always changing and so should you. The off-season is a perfect time to switch up your training programs and work on elements that aren't being addressed during in-season play. During the competitive season, my athletes use neuromuscular training techniques which I call High TripleXity to maximize their speed, athleticism and efficiency of movement. In the off-season, we want to switch up the training stimulus and challenge the body in a different way which I call LoadXplode. For some athletes, we want to use this non-competitive time to put on some muscle and size. I call these MEAT workouts. You may be thinking meathead workouts and you wouldn't be too far off. Applied pressure over a long duration of time yields massive change. I'm coming out of the orthodontic closet. I have braces! There I said it. 49 years old and wearing braces. I didn't just get them, ohh no! I have had Invisalign and now braces for almost 3 years! You didn't notice you say? Ohh that's because I haven't smiled properly since I got them. Hiding them from the world. Like I use to hide my old smile. It probably only really bothered me. No one ever said, "Jay are you British?" But I noticed the twisted choppers every time I saw pictures or watched a video of myself. A fall on the ice, when I was young, provided me with a lifetime of half smiles. At some point, I had enough and was ready to make a change. Change doesn't come instantly. It comes over a long period of time when the right amount of pressure is applied in the right direction.
