Claremont's Parklets: To Keep or Not to Keep? Claremont City Staff's Katie Wand highlights the rules and trade-offs.
The issues that come before the City Council in Claremont are often complex, nuanced with underlying rules, considerations and trade-offs of which most citizens are unaware.  Whether to keep Claremont's parklets is no exception.  Katie Wand, Claremont Staff's Assistant to the City Manager, offers up the results of her research, highlighting the many facets involved in whether Claremont keeps their  Parklets - the outdoor dining areas permitted and built as a measure to allow restaurants to continue operation during the COVID pandemic.  Many of the patrons of Claremont's Village have come to like the outdoor dining experience they provide, but not everyone is looking to keep the parklets in perpetuity.  Now that regulations regarding emergency measures due to COVID are sunsetting, the decision to keep, remove or construct a compromise regarding the parklets comes before the City Council.Ms. Wand does an expert and detailed deep-dive into the subject, revealing the many considerations, rules and regulations which will affect the parklets ongoing presence, versus returning to pre-pandemic form. However you feel about the parklets, this episode is a "must listen" to fully understand the requirements, costs and benefits involved in the ongoing success of the outdoor dining experience many now enjoy.================================For more information, visit the City of Claremont's website: https://www.ci.claremont.ca.usOr visit City Hall: City of Claremont207 Harvard Ave., Claremont, CA 91711Phone: 909-399-5460Follow at https://twitter.com/CityofClaremontOr contact Katie Wand directly KWand@ci.claremont.ca.us Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Marshmallows...for Adults? Absolutely! - Rosemallow Artisanal's Lani Fox and Uncommon Good's Johanna Teissere explain and tempt your tastebuds.
Marshmallows are reported to have been invented in Egypt, around 2000 BC.  Four millenniums later, Lani Fox - owner of Rosemallow Artisanal, a small batch artisanal confection company - has taken marshmallows to the next level.   Opening last year, Lani has been creating exciting, innovative and seasonal desserts using ingredients grown in her own garden and/or selected by Johanna Teissere, Farm Director and Master Gardener at Uncommon Good, from their farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and other produce.  Their collaboration has raised marshmallows from their familiar spots in hot cocoa or on graham crackers to being an irresistible new dessert with unusual flavor pairings.  If you try some of their best sellers, such as loquat and fennel or lavender and mint; or those emulating cocktails, like grapefruit spritzer or Spicy Chocolate Almond Liqueur, you'll understand why Rosemallow Artisanal's specialties have become so popular, so quickly. Take a few minutes to listen to the genuinely passionate and enthusiastic Lani and Johanna as they recount the creation of the business and their journey to this point.  And, when trying some, please let Lani and Johanna know you enjoyed their episode; there's likely a smile and sample in the bargain.=======================================Visit Lani's website for more informationwww.rosemallow.comEmail: rosemallowartisanal@gmail.comor text/call 909-833-3205Stop in to see Johanna Teissere at their Claremont Uncommon Good farm and Earthen Office, located at: 211 W. Common Good International Film Festival 2023: Unique and powerful movies that provoke thought, create questions.
Claremont is regarded by many as "where you go for what you can't get anywhere else", which only starts to describe the offerings at 2023's Common Good International Film Festival.  After a COVID-related hiatus, the festival is returning , better than ever.  Festival leaders, eloquent spokespeople (and mega-movie-fans) Jeremy Fackenthal and Jim Fahey share the purpose and goals of the festival and its sponsor, The Center for Process Studies.  Jeremy and Jim provide highlights about the festival's genesis and over twenty year history, discuss its current iteration and do a deep-dive preview of several of the "don't miss" movies being showcased.  Especially interesting is the explanation of how and why the 10 movies that are to be shown, February 17-20 at the Laemmle Theater, were selected.Aiming for more than just entertainment, the festival's film choices are intended to leave one thinking long after the movie is over, and aims to raise questions about the topic and story...which can be discussed after the film in an open forum, in some cases with the directors themselves. For those searching for a higher level, unique and an thought provoking movie experience, this year's Common Good International Film Festival is sure to be the holy grail you seek.======================================================Visit Common Good Films:Website:  https://commongoodfilms.orgYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Common+Good+FilmsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/CommonGoodFilmFestival Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/commongoodfilmfestival/And Jim Fahey's Blog, which includes more insights and reviews of current cinematic offerings, including The Festival's movies:https://airplanemode.substack.com/ Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Dr. Deepak Shimkhada - Claremont-based author, historian, Nepalese art expert and educator - previews and discusses his latest works.
Dr. Deepak Shimkhada, PhD, returns to Claremont Speaks to provide some insight into four new books he has either written or been a chief collaborator.   As way of recording the highlights of his nearly eight decades of extraordinary experiences, Dr. Shimkhada chronicles many of his best memories in Nepal to California: A Life of Adventure and Memories.  He recounts growing up in a small village near Mt. Everest, his transition to Kathmandu, Chicago and then Los Angeles,  Dr. Shimkhada takes the reader on a ride of discovery and adventure that few are privileged to experience. Dr. Shimkhada recently completed one of his long-term projects, the translation to English of Sylvain Lévi's monumental work Le Népal: Étude Historique d’un Royaume Hindou, published in French in the early 1900s.  Published as Nepal: Historical Study of a Hindu Kingdom from the original French manuscript, it has stood the test of time as the standard for scholarly work on Nepal. In addition to his own children's books, Deepak has assisted and guided his young family members in writing their first books. The Boy from the Planet Zobur, by Sanjan Mahalingam, is a vivid and captivating cautionary tale about the consequences of mis-treating the environment.Just Keep Going, by Rohin Relan, weaves an inspirational story about growth and the power of family, and includes elements of soccer - popular in Nepal.  The starts in Kathmandu, a city familiar to Dr. Shimkhada and his large, multi-generational family.Smart, eloquent and engaging to listen to, this insightful review of works is entertaining and informative even before reading them.  Each is available through Amazon - the links above will take you directly to the specific Amazon web-page.  Enjoy the interview and Dr. Shimkhada's latest works, and when you see him in and around Claremont, don't hesitate to tell him how much you enjoyed them.===========================================================Deepak Shimkhada, Ph.D.Adjunct Professor, Chaffey CollegePresident, Indic Foundation (www.indic.org)Email: dshimkhada@gmail.comAmazon Author Twitter: @dshimkhadawww.deepakshimkhada.comwww.nepalmemoryproject.comhttp://nepalmemoryproject.com/ Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. The Antikythera Mechanism, a 2100 yr. old astronomical computer; could it have changed the direction of today's technology? Claremont's Dr. Evaggelos Vallianatos explains how.
The Antikythera Mechanism, an astronomical computer probably crafted in Rhodes in the second century BCE, is regarded as being the first precision, gear driven calculator and the forerunner of modern computers.  Found by sponge-divers as a corroded lump in a 2,100-year-old Roman-era shipwreck in the early 1900's, it is one of the most advanced examples of technology ever discovered from the ancient world.  The level of genius revealed by this wondrous mechanism has fascinated and astounded historians for decades. A historian of science and a staunch environmental advocate, Dr. Evaggelos Vallianatos returns to Claremont Speaks to relate how the mechanism was created, lost, found and then studied and investigated.  From that foundation, he extrapolates the implications to what today's society could have been had the mechanism and the guiding philosophies and purposes that created it been allowed to flourish. This interview provides a window into how the achievements and lessons of the past speak loudly as cautionary tales regarding the efforts and pursuits of technology today, and how crucial it is to continually measure the ongoing advancement by whether it is truly good for all of society, not simply to enrich corporate coffers.Caution: listening to this episode may foster a deeper curiosity about the Antikythera Mechanism and how ancient Greek philosophy, if applied to today's technological advances, might very well help, instead of continue to damage, today's environment.==============================================For more on the Antikythera Mechanism Dr. Vallianatos' book,  The Antikythera Mechanism: The Story Behind the Genius of the Greek Computer and its DemiseAvailable on AmazonDr. Vallianatos' presentation on YouTube:https://youtu.be/8nNbiLf2_FsTo contact Dr. Vallianatos, please email claremontspeaks@gmail.com. Stand up, Speak up, and Be Valued; Kathryn Mora discusses using your voice and following your bliss.
Kathryn Mora - a popular writer for The Claremont Courier and one of the most favored by Claremont Speaks' listeners - returns to the microphone to relate a story about a recent outpatient visit in which the staff illustrated some of the all-too-common treatment of those who, as Kathryn delicately puts it, "have had a lot of birthdays."  Her experience in one of Claremont's otherwise best medical facilities showcased what can go wrong as a result of culturally ingrained behavior towards older people, and serves as a metaphor for the condition throughout society - which  doesn't have to be that way,   In an effort to offer suggestions for improvement, all in the spirit of constructive criticism, Kathryn spotlights an interactive style people often use.  Though they mean well, the practice is actually quite destructive in its own way.  With that as the framework, she offers sage constructive criticism and suggestions that most anyone can begin using right away, and would inarguably benefit both parties.Give Kathryn's short but truly heartfelt episode a listen, and see if her experience seems similar - and all too familiar.  Heed her nudge to take action, and take advantage of her offer to help - maybe if/when the next incident occurs, the factors for change can be more easily put in motion, with a measurable improvement as the outcome.==========================================Kathryn invites anyone who would have had a similar experience and would like to discuss it to contact her by email: kathrynmora@gmail.comor visit her Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/kathrynmoraand contact her using Facebook Messenger Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Random Shorts 2022: Nancy James on the Happy Crowd and Claremont's sense of community.
The Random Shorts series is an effort to post the several short but enjoyable interviews that, unfortunately, had to be temporarily set aside (not forgotten) due to life, time and scheduling constraints.  As everyone was leaving the Happy Crowd's last concert, likable and witty Nancy James accepted the invitation from our roving interviewer to take the mic.  She briefly discusses how much she and her family enjoyed the Happy Crowd that night and over the years, where she's from and what brought her family here, and then opined on her favorite of Claremont's many great qualities.   Listen and enjoy the brief but sparkling repartee with Nancy, who was so casual and friendly as to leave one wanting to hear more.  Nancy - you're welcome back any time. Random Shorts, 2022 - Miguel Farer, Competitive Cyclist, talks about life, high-end bikes, racing with the champions, and what it takes to compete.
One warm evening, during the summer concert series, when most everyone else was not so interested, Claremont resident and experienced competitive cyclist Miguel Farer was kind enough to take the microphone and talk with Claremont Speaks' undaunted roving interviewer.  His interview deserves to be enjoyed, so it is released now among the Random Shorts series. As a very nice surprise, Miguel spoke about his long and interesting career as a top-rated cyclist - competing with Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMonde.  He highlighted some of his experiences, interactions with the GoaTs, and talked about the incredible bikes he's ridden - all while relaxing and enjoying a root beer float out in front of Bert & Rocky's ice cream emporium.  MIguel's short interview - edited for sound quality improvement and filler-word reduction, but little else - is effortlessly entertaining, giving a little peek into a sport and a culture not everyone sees from the inside, as Miguel had done for decades.  Miguel's discussion spotlights a career of cycling most only aspire to, and hints that in Claremont, you never really know who you might be sitting next to on a street corner bench. This interview is just the kind of rough gem that our mobile agent is hoping to find when walking around Claremont, looking like a microphone-laden nomad.  If and when you spot him at the local concerts and other events, don't hesitate to step up, extend a hand, and ask for the opportunity to tell Claremont and the world whatever you've always wanted to say. Random Shorts 2022: Lori and Hector, enjoying the Happy Crowd's Last Concert
During the year, the hardworking staff at Claremont Speaks sometimes ventures into the wilds of Claremont, armed only with a field recorder and a couple of microphones, in hopes of speaking to everyday people about everyday stuff.Unfortunately, sometmes a few of these random, short interviews get superseded due to time and scheduling constraints.  This series - Random Shorts - is intended to wrap up what has been an exceptional 2022, and air those worthy and real interviews, in their natural state, as much as is practicable. This interview, with the lovely and talented Lori and her conversational companion Hector, was conducted during the height of the Happy Crowd's last performance.  Although most of the background sounds have been masterfully mitigated, the conversation is real and unedited.  The pair discuss their careers, growing up in Claremont, how Claremont's people are accepting and friendly more so than elsewhere, and a myriad of other short topics.  These Random Shorts are intended to simply give the people that choose to speak a chance to be heard.  Look for more of the best of 2022's Random Shorts to come.  For 2023, if you see the Claremont Speaks' interviewer walking around - easily identifiable by the fashion-forward "Claremont Speaks" T-shirt and a handful of recording gear - be ye not shy; step up, say hi, and ask to  talk about...whatever is on your mind. A Children's book...for everyone?: Author Marisa Nicely on her new book "Ezer the Bagel, the Rescue."
Claremont-ers love their dogs; they go everywhere with them, and during a trip through the village, not seeing one being walked would be odd.  Among those, few are more famous and beloved than "Ezer the Bagel", the star of a new book series from parent, teacher of 30+ years and new author Marisa Nicely.  Marisa/Ezer's new book is one of those rarities that both entertain but also carry an important and profound message that helps children with important life skills, such as: self worth, awareness of self and others, resilience, courage, caring and purpose.  Marisa recounts the highlights of her journey to fulfilling her lifelong goal of writing children's books, and this first volume completely validates that effort.  "The Rescue" already has readers asking for more; the second book is written, due to publish in the spring.   Expertly illustrated and carrying a strong message anyone can enjoy, "Ezer the Bagel" is destined to becoming a "must-have" addition to any family's library. Marisa's stories of her life, her journey to this point and then how the book came to be are beyond engaging, but second only to reading the book itself - preferably aloud to others.  Marisa and Ezer are welcome visitors when they do "story time" at schools, libraries and for "kids of all ages" - such as those at Pilgrim Place.   Enjoy the episode and the book, and share both with everyone you know,  If you tell Marisa and Ezer how much you enjoyed both, you'll get a big smile and an enthusiastic tail-wag, respectively,  guaranteed. ============================Contact Marisa through Ezer's website: https://www.ezerthebagel.com/contactTo book a visit with Marisa and Ezer: https://www.ezerthebagel.com/book-visitOR...Contact Marisa and Ezer By email: hello@ezerthebagel.comVisit them onFacebook  and  Instagram (@ezerthebagel) pages to keep current on what they're doing and where they'll be.Visit 42nd Street Bagels in Claremont for a delicious "Ezer" Bagel DogTo purchase the book, visit: Amazon Barnes & Noble BAM! Can Claremont's Small Businesses Compete Against the Malls and "Big-Box" Stores? Matt Zertuche, CEO of Paymintz Merchant Processing, explains how.
Claremont's business community is made up of many unique, specialized retail destinations and relatively few mega-corporate businesses; no "big-box" stores, no large malls, and few classic "fast food" establishments.  Claremont resident and entrepreneur Matt Zartuche, CEO of Paymintz Merchant Services Solutions,  set aside a few moments to explain how having the right set of business tools and support is essential in competing with the large businesses and optimizing what is an ideal environment for entrepreneurs, small retailers and other growing businesses.   Running a small business is tough enough.  To be optimally competitive, most solo-preneurs and small, hardworking, clever business owners could use help with the innumerable important, but time-sucking tasks and headaches - payment processing, sales tax collection/reporting, and creating and growing one's on-line presence and sales volume, as a few examples.  Matt explains how automating and streamlining these processes frees the owners to build on the core strengths of their business, and provides an example of how one business increased their volume by several hundred percent.  These services also help enterprises classified as "high risk" - debt collection and cannabis/CBD products for example - get access to the kinds of financial services that they absolutely need and are often denied. If only for the information and education, every small business is encouraged to listen to this episode.  Matt invites all to contact him (no obligation) - to answer any questions and learn how these products and services could be customized to render the absolute most from all your efforts.  Spoiler Alert!  When you do meet with Matt: if you mention how much you enjoyed this episode, you may be at risk of getting a free beer.================================================Matt ZertuchePaymintz Merchant ServicesWebsite: Paymintz.netFor their contact form : https://paymintz.net/contact/Phone: 310-770-7478Email: mattzertuche@paymintz.netTo book an appointment: https://bookwithmemattz.as.me/schedule.phpSuccess story - Hall of Fame Baseball Cards: https://paymintz.net/paymintz-merchant-services-hall-of-fame-baseball-card-shop/ Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Can Claremont Lead in Environmental Stewardship? - Interview with Dr. Evaggelos Vallianatos, Ph.D
Claremont is rich in many resources, not the least of which are the smart, active and involved residents.  One of the most prominent is Evaggelos Vallianatos, Ph.D , an ecopolitical theorist and environmental strategist, historian and outspoken activist in the fight against global warming.  He describes this struggle as a matter of life-and-death for us all.  In the first of what is planned to be a series of forthright and pointed interviews,  Dr. Vallianatos posits that Claremont could, should - must - be a leader in this fight, and how Claremont could lead by example.  Claremont's leadership in this regard - if the city leaders, businesses and residents so choose to accept the challenge - would benefit Claremont environmentally, financially, and by increasing the value of living in the city, all while making valuable and effective local contributions against global warming.   One may not be able to change the world,  but the measures to change things locally are well within reach. To contact Dr. Vallianatos, please send email to:ClaremontSpeaks@gmail.comDr. Vallianatos' Blogs and Articleshttp://vallianatos.blogspot.comhttps://www.counterpunch.org/author/evaggelos-vallianatos/https://muckrack.com/evaggelosvallianatos Selected Highlights of Dr. Vallianatos' Biography:Experience:  Capitol Hill, 1976-78: International politics of food and agriculture US Environmental Protection Agency, 1979-2004: environmental regulation, human and ecological risks of pesticides and industrialized agriculture, benefits of organic farming alternatives to industrialized farming, climate change Teaching Dr. Vallianatos has taught at several universities, including Pitzer College and California Polytechnic University, Pomona. Activist Mandana Mojaverian on the murder of Mahsa Amini, the oppressive Iranian regime, and effecting much-needed change.
During a vocal civil demonstration in late September, a group of Iranian-American women sought to raise awareness of the fate of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year old Iranian woman that was beaten into a coma, and later death, by the Iranian government's "Morality Police."  The ironically named enforcement group took exception to how Amini was wearing a head scarf...with tragic results. Mandana Mojaverian, a Claremont resident, student and activist, took a few minutes out to talk to Claremont Speaks and explain what exactly happened, how things really are in Iran, what should be done about it, where NOT to find the truth and who should - and should not - get involved.  She also recounts her journey to Claremont and some of the unexpected cultural differences she encountered along the way.Mandana's group's protest in September, along with many, many across the US and the world, recently appear to have been quite effective.  The Wall Street Journal reported on December 4, 2022, that Iran’s Attorney General, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, stated that Iran had "disbanded its so-called morality police and is considering altering the requirement that women cover their heads in public."  Mandana cautioned against too readily accepting that said by US news sources, but this seems to be generally corroborated by other sources. To Mandana and all those who voiced their opposition to Iran's actions, this shows that the combination of free speech - and the willingness to "say something" - can contribute to real change. You are invited and encouraged to return to Claremont Speaks any time.Wall Street Journal: Iran Disbands Morality Police, Considers Changing Hijab Laws, Official Says Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. Claremont is a destination for many who seek to appreciate a variety of art forms, and among the most valued are independent films.  Movie theaters were severely impacted by the pandemic, most vulnerable among them has been independent films.  Vince Turner, however, is working to revive the movie-going experience by providing unique and interesting short-form, independent films in his weekly Claremont Film Festival.  Showing first-rate, curated films selected from hundreds each week, Vince provides Claremont a movie experience in keeping with and befitting the city's tacit theme "Claremont, for what you just won't find anywhere else."  Among the recent and upcoming selections are films about the cultural hurdles encountered when a Chinese auto parts company opens a factory in Ohio, sending a rocket/space probe to retrieve samples from an asteroid, and a documentary on the conflict in Ukraine in 2014 - the predecessor of the situation today.Vince offers his broad and ambitious perspectives on the social importance of the in-theater movie experience - postulating that one crafted "from Claremont, by Claremont, for Claremont...might be able to sustain itself simply because it would have the community effect."  This and other insights, coupled with his anecdotes on starting the film festival and what it takes to produce it each week, make this episode one for all of Claremont.  For those then motivated to attend the showing of his curated collection of movies each week, let Vince know you appreciate what he's doing and how much you liked his turn at the mic on Claremont Speaks.==================================================Contact Vince Turner for more information, location, movie titles and showtimes:vince@schoolbiz.com Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. The Turkey Trot Chronicles (pt 4) - Anil, Kunjin and Cairo, on the race and creating a new family tradition.
Anil, Kunjin and 3 yr-old Cairo, were cooling off after the 5K, and were amenable to talking briefly bout their first-ever Turkey trot.  They discuss their livelihood, Claremont, the race and how pushing a 3-year old in a stroller the whole way should get some points for "degree of difficulty."  Perspiration or not, Anil, Kunjin and his family intend to make the Turkey Trot an annual family tradition; one of the Sunrise Rotary Club's main objectives. The Turkey Trot Chronicles (pt 2) - Suzanne Keen, Rotarian and President of Scripps College, on the race and impressions of Claremont.
Dr. Suzanne Keen, who recently assumed the mantle as the President of Scripps College, was gracious enough to take a short break from handing out water bottles at the Rotary booth to speak with Claremont Speaks.  She recounts her journey to, and impressions of Claremont, related how enjoyable being part of the Rotary and the race was, and how she and her husband Fran - running that day - were thrilled at what Claremont and SoCal consider "winter"...having recently come from upper New York state.=========================================More about Dr. Suzanne Keenhttps://www.scrippscollege.edu/president/biography Feedback, questions, comments, constructive criticism are all welcomed and encouraged.Send to claremontspeaks@gmail.com with Feedback in the subject line, or go to the appropriate page on Claremont Speaks' website - https://www.claremontspeaks.comClaremont Speaks is a Paradise Road Media production. The Turkey Trot Chronicles (pt 1) - Lucky Feet Shoes' Nichole and Kevin talk walkin' the walk.
In the crisp Thanksgiving morning of 2022, Claremont Speaks went to the Sunrise Rotary Club's Annual Turkey Trot, seeking to talk to those involved with the event.  The ace pattaloog/sneaker-head team from Lucky Feet Shoes of Upland, Nichole and Kevin, were doing their best to educate and entertain the throngs of runners and those cheering them on.  With their unrivaled command of footwear technology - and a dose of humor - they took a few moments to talk kicks with Claremont Speaks, and impart some little known facts about the importance of choosing the right shoe - or clog - and how it can affect one from the ankles up - even jaw alignment.=====================================Lucky Feet Shoes, located near Target in the Colonies Crossroads shopping center.Website - https://luckyfeetshoes.com/pages/upland1883 N.
