A New Commandment (John 13:31-38)

There's only one thing the church needs to be able to accomplish its mission and reach the world? And in what is perhaps the most popular and most ignored verse in all of Scripture, Jesus tells us what it before going on to show us what it is.

In a word, it's love. And it's the presence of the love of God in Christ within the church that enables and equips the church to love one another and the world around them.

Sermon: A New Commandment

Series: Part 29 of the series Walking with God: A Journey Through the Gospel of John

Passage: John 13:31-38

Preacher: Chris Gensheer, Lead Pastor of Christ Church Mansfield

About Christ Church Mansfield

Christ Church Mansfield exists to help all people believe the gospel of Jesus more deeply and apply it more widely in Dallas / Fort Worth and beyond. Loved to the End (John 13:1-30)

On the night in which Jesus was betrayed, He took bread and cup to share a meal with His disciples. At that meal, Jesus got up and stopped down to wash the disciples' feet, an act of humility reserved only for servants and slaves. And in this way, Jesus shares ultimate reality with those who He loves: true love, to the end, looks like service that meets our deepest need. This is what Jesus has come to do, and is preparing to accomplish on the cross. But before He goes to Calvary, He gets down on a knee and cleanses those who are His from that which is making them unclean. And He offers this even to one who would soon betray Him.
In this sermon we learn what true love, the love of God in Christ, looks like. In response, Pastor Chris led us in a time of identifying and releasing from our hearts and minds those particular people and situations that have marked us as betrayals and painful memories in order to more fully receive the grace, mercy, and love of God in Christ as we approach His table at the Lord's Supper.
Sermon: Loved to the End

Series: Part 28 of the series Walking with God: A Journey Through the Gospel of John

Passage: John 13:1-30

Preacher: Chris Gensheer, Lead Pastor of Christ Church Mansfield

About Christ Church Mansfield

Christ Church Mansfield exists to help all people believe the gospel of Jesus more deeply and apply it more widely in Dallas / Fort Worth and beyond. When the World Goes After Jesus (John 12:9-50)

You may wish to see Jesus. But the real question is, “Do you want to believe in Him?” (all of John’s Gospel is written so that we might believe in Him and have life.”

Believe is more than mere acknowledgment; it’s Assent (Jesus is true; I choose to trust Him), it’s Adoration (Jesus is beautiful/glorious to me), it’s Abiding (Jesus is good/I obey Him and live my life according to Him and His rule).

When the world goes after Jesus, they want a King who will conquer their enemies, but not necessarily rule over them. Jesus says, essentially, “You can’t have one without the other.”

In our passage today, we see that Jesus is a king with a mission coming to a people with a condition.

Sermon: When the World Goes After Jesus

Series: Part 27 of the series Walking with God: A Journey Through the Gospel of John

Passage: John 12:9-50

Preacher: Chris Gensheer, Lead Pastor of Christ Church Mansfield

About Christ Church Mansfield

Christ Church Mansfield exists to help all people believe the gospel of Jesus more deeply and apply it more widely in Dallas / Fort Worth and beyond. Responding to Jesus’ Death Defying Life (John 11:45-12:8)

Summary

As Jesus draws closer to the cross, the reactions to Him grow increasingly volatile and polarizing. In these times, the things that trigger us reveal what our true motivations are. When things get turned up, we see what actually moves us in our life. We see in this week’s passage that our lives and reactions to Jesus reveal the truth - we either hate Jesus, love Jesus, or use Jesus. Having the right words, or better ideas, or close proximity to Jesus, does not mean that you love Jesus. And it’s only those who know they are loved by Jesus that respond truly in love to Jesus.

Sermon: Responding to Jesus’ Death Defying Life

Series: Part 26 of the series Walking with God: A Journey Through the Gospel of John

Passage: John 11:45-12:8

Preacher: Chris Gensheer, Lead Pastor of Christ Church Mansfield

About Christ Church Mansfield

Christ Church Mansfield exists to help all people believe the gospel of Jesus more deeply and apply it more widely in Dallas / Fort Worth and beyond. The Compassionate One Bringing Life out of Death (John 11:1-44)

In this sermon, Pastor Chris Gensheer shows us the purpose behind our suffering, the slowness of God’s intervention, and the greater glory and grace of God in bringing us through it all to renewed and resurrected life with Him.

The raising of Lazarus is the final and climactic sign of the Gospel of John and his “Book of Signs”; but it is not the final and climactic sign of all God’s promises and working to overcome sin, death, destruction, and dysfunction. No, that will come about with the resurrection of the One who is the “God of life who suffered death” in order to put death to death; The One who lets His grace rather than the grave have the last, final, and ultimate word over our lives; The One who is now leading and guiding by His Spirit all things in all Creation to be redeemed, restored, and renewed in Him - for His glory and our ultimate joy.

Sermon: The Compassionate One Bringing Life out of Death

Series: Part 25 of the series Walking with God: A Journey Through the Gospel of John

Passage: John 11:1-44

Preacher: Chris Gensheer, Lead Pastor of Christ Church Mansfield

Christ Church Mansfield exists to help all people believe the gospel of Jesus more deeply and apply it more widely in Dallas / Fort Worth and beyond. The Goal of Discipleship
In this sermon, Pastor Chris Gensheer takes us through the end, or goal, of our discipleship. From passages in Matthew, Acts, and Habakkuk he explains the who, what, where, when, and why we are to not only be disciples of Jesus but also help make disciples of Jesus out of the nations. We are to make disciples because it is our calling - as creatures made in the image of God, and as a redeemed people in Christ. It is to live as His ambassadors of His heavenly kingdom in a world gone astray. It is to be His agents of peace, co-laboring with Christ in bringing all things and all people to life in Him. It is to bring into our world the fullness of the Biblical intention for God’s world, or shalom. According to Scripture and the best of Christian history and theology shalom is: “The webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and delight… We call it peace… In the Bible, shalom means universal flourishing, wholeness, and delight - a rich state of affairs in which natural needs are satisfied and natural gifts fruitfully employed, a state of affairs that inspires joyful wonder as its Creator and Savior opens doors and welcomes the creatures in whom he delights.” - Cornelius Plantinga, Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be (10) This is what God wants for His world. It’s what He wants for His people. And by His Spirit, He is working in and through us to bring it about as we follow Jesus in all of life. God’s good world, ruined by man’s sin, is redeemed by His Son, and renewed by His Spirit, with a people now commissioned to be restored into the image of Christ for the glory of God and good of the world, starting now and continuing on forever. This is why we make disciples as followers of Jesus. The Method of Discipleship
How do we grow in Christ-likeness? The answer is simple, but not easy. Last week we explored the first part of that answer by looking at the cost of discipleship - our love and our entire lives in surrender to Him. This week, we look at the second part of the answer and find that King Jesus places a great emphasis on communion with Him and one another - or in other words, in relationships. Relationships are how we grow as Christ followers. This week we explore Romans 12:9-13 and see that our relationships are formed in a genuine gospel community with one another and radically ordinary hospitality to those outside the church. The Cost of Discipleship
In Christ, you and I have what it takes to follow Him throughout our life. But it will take everything we've got. God's love and grace are free to us in Christ, but it isn't cheap. The call to be with Jesus (week 1) demands the giving of our entire lives to Him. This is the path to a more meaningful life in Christ - placing and finding out entire life in Him. The Call of Discipleship
In this sermon, Lead Pastor Chris Gensheer presents the problem facing us as a church and the solution from Matthew 4:19 and Matthew 17:1-8. Rather than resting content to simply "play church", Jesus calls His people to "follow Me." This is life itself, coming to us in the person and work of Jesus Christ. And before we get tasked, or moved, to do anything for Jesus, He first simply calls us to be with Him. The Good Shepherd and The Voices We Hear

What voices do you hear in your head? We all do; that's not the question. The real question is what are you hearing and what do you do with what you hear?

Jesus in John 10 continues to show us who He is with the imagery of a shepherd who calls us to a particular way and experience of life - for those who listen and hear Him. The Scandalous Grace of Jesus (Caught in Sin and Can We Trust Our Bibles?)
What happens when we get caught in the act? Better yet, what does Jesus do when He catches someone in sin? This past Sunday we explored one of the most well known and somewhat controversial episodes in the life and ministry of Jesus. When a woman is caught in the sin of adultery by the religious leaders, Jesus responds only One who is God would. By applying with authority the law of God and the grace of God in forgiving sinners, Jesus frees her up to be a real sinner and really changed by grace. With Jesus, real sinners get not only God's heart but a new heart. And through the sermon, we discovered more and more why we can actually trust the Bibles we have to be the very Word of God for our faith and life. Trusting God’s Timing and The Will to Follow

Jesus gives us enough to go on: either to kill Him or to trust Him.

How do we continue to trust and follow God when we want to do something else? How do we reconcile what we want with what He wants? What we think with what He thinks? His timing with ours?

In John 7:1-31 Jesus challenges us with the reality that there are two kinds of doubters - those who are looking for a reasonable answer to their questions and concerns, and those who are just looking to keep Jesus at a distance. The question before us all is which kind of are we? To Jesus what matters more than what we want in any given moment, is whether or not we want to want the living God. This is the will to do God’s will and follow Jesus that He’s most concerned with.
Sermon: Trusting God’s Timing & The Will to Follow Series: Part 18 of the series Walking with God: A Journey Through the Gospel of John Passage: John 7:1-31 Preacher: Chris Gensheer, Lead Pastor of Christ Church Mansfield
Christ Church Mansfield exists to help all people believe the gospel of Jesus more deeply and apply it more widely in Dallas / Fort Worth and beyond. The Nature of True Faith (Drawn into God, Bread of Life, pt 2)
There is a religion Jesus doesn't want, and a kind of faith He outright rejects. What is the nature of true faith? What does it mean to be a follower of Christ and not just a fan? In John 6:41-71 Jesus confronts and challenges us with the fact that we can only have Jesus and the life He brings on His terms, not our own. Faith then is not casual acceptance of or partial obedience to God but comprehensive surrender to Christ. The True Bread of Life (Jesus and the Crowds)

In the OT God's people survived in the wilderness not because Moses fed them bread, but God did. Now, in the NT, Jesus feeds the crowds not because He is the dispenser of life, but because He is life itself for His people.

Jesus doesn't give the mana from heaven; He is the mana from heaven.

Sermon: The True Bread of Life

Series: Part 16 of the series Walking with God: A Journey Through the Gospel of John

Passage: John 6:22-40

Preacher: J.B.
