Part Two - University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education Presentation of the Minnesota Opioid Prescribing Guidelines
Welcome to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education presentation of the Minnesota Opioid prescribing guidelines, first edition 2018. The guidelines were created the Minnesota Opioid Prescribing Work Group, working in collaboration with the Minnesota departments of Health, Human. Services, and Labor and Industry.    As an oral health professional, you may notice that the use of the words medical provider is widespread throughout the guidelines. While these guidelines may focus on medical professionals, dentists and oral surgeons are by far the major prescribers of opioids for children ages 10 to 19. Based on University of Minnesota research conducted by the thought-leader and Oral Surgeon, Dr. Harold Tu, even very short-term prescriptions have been associated with later drug misuse. In fact, a recent study of drug-naive teens found that getting an opioid prescription in high school is associated with a one-third greater risk of future opioid misuse.   The goal of this presentation is to provide you with an overview of the Minnesota guidelines and to help your entire dental team update your care for patients in pain.    Throughout this podcast course, we will focus on the prescribing guidelines document issued on March 30, 2018. You will find this PDF on our opioid course page located at smile.umn.edu or by viewing it through the Department of Health website. As you look through the document, take some time to carefully review the Summary of Opioid Prescribing Recommendations grids located on pages 13 to 16. Many oral health providers find this information as the most useful portion of the document, worthy of printing and having readily available within the dental practice.
