Her Name is Hope
Luke and I banter for 20 minutes about grad school, Gomer redoing his office, etc. Then we introduce the subject and Gomer cries a lot. The name of the wood is called "Purpleheart" and it is a South American hardwood that is super dense. The wood will turn brown over time after it is milled, so the use of sealants is a must to keep that intensely beautiful purple shade from fading. Also, its density makes it notoriously hard to deal with, as the sap will gum up your table saw blade very quickly, resulting in a lot of burn marks from the blade onto the wood. But no worries, for purpleheart sands down incredibly well. Eternal Rest Eternal rest, grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.Sponsored By:Catholic Match: Faith-focused Dating: the largest Catholic dating site in the world—where thousands of Catholics find their spouse. Extroversion is characterized by sociability, talkativeness, assertiveness, and excitability. People who are high in extroversion tend to seek out social stimulation and opportunities to engage with others. These individuals are often described as being full of life, energy, and positivity. It’s been viewed more than 5 million times on the web. But when Reed Hastings and I (along with some colleagues) wrote a PowerPoint deck explaining how we shaped the culture and motivated performance at Netflix, where Hastings is CEO and I was chief talent officer from 1998 to 2012, we had no idea it would go viral. We realized that some of the talent management ideas we’d pioneered, such as the concept that workers should be allowed to take whatever vacation time they feel is appropriate, had been seen as a little crazy (at least until other companies started adopting them). But we were surprised that an unadorned set of 127 slides—no music, no animation—would become so influential. What It Means to Work Here — It’s the HR equivalent of keeping up with the Joneses: In their quest to find and retain top talent, businesses often try to match competitors’ offers, ensuring that their compensation schemes, health care benefits, training programs, and other talent-management practices are in line with the rest of the industry’s. While this strategy may be useful for bringing job candidates to the door, it’s not necessarily the most effective way to usher the right people across the threshold—great employees who will be enthusiastic about their work and fiercely loyal to the organization and its mission.

How to Cancel the Future
Three Main Topics: Gomer talks with two youths who experience the lack of reciprocity between faith and the sacraments, Luke explores the Marxist critique of music culture as future-canceling, and Gomer buys a gun, which sets off Luke's red flags. Paragraph 5. Secondly, scientific and technological knowledge, which is so prestigious today, tends to impose itself as a single model in all fields of knowledge and for all kinds of objects. Its radical orientation towards certainty of an empirical and naturalistic type is opposed not only to metaphysical knowledge, but also to knowledge of a symbolic nature. While scientific knowledge emphasizes the capacity of human reason, it does not exhaust all dimensions of reason or knowledge, nor does it cover all cognitive needs for a full human life. Symbolic thinking, with its richness and plasticity, on the one hand, collects and elaborates reflectively the ethical and affective dimensions of experience; and, on the other, touches and transforms the spiritual and cognitive structure of the subject. For this reason, together with all the religious traditions of humanity, the transmission of revelation, with its concomitant cognitive content, is situated in the symbolic sphere, not in the empirical and naturalistic sphere. The sacramental reality of participation in the mystery of grace can only be understood in the unity of this double dimension of the symbolic experience: cognitive and performative. Where the scientistic paradigm reigns, which is blind to symbolic thought, sacramental thought is obstructed. Heavy is the Head who Wears the Crown
Ssssymbolism conversation continues! And it's Luke's fault, not Gomer's! Luke brings up the meaning behind a King's crown and how society knew where it stood in relation to it. This expands to a whole fascinating look at modern clothing and how hyper-abundance shifts our priorities in how we look, actually making the wearing of formal attire less important. We discuss how symbols in society end up impoverishing that society. Luke then asks, _What came first: the destruction of the symbolic meaning or the loss of personal dignity? _Sponsored By:BetterHelp.com: Get 10% off your secure, specialized counseling at BetterHelp.com/foxes Support Catching FoxesLinks:VanVickle GoFundMeOtto von Habsburg — The Last Holy Roman Emperor. Original.Secular Monks by Andrew Taggart | Articles | First Things — It seems that something outside the domains of economics and sexuality bears on the question before us. My hypothesis is religious. The men I have in mind are “secular monks” who embrace a secular “immanent frame,” ascetic self-possession, and a stringent version of human agency. This secular monasticism may be generating a new kind of celibacy. In A Secular Age, Charles Taylor coins the term “immanent frame” with a view to describing what it’s like to live in the modern world. “We come,” he writes, “to understand our lives as taking place within a self-sufficient immanent order.” It is an order that requires nothing transcendent in order to function. It seems to arise out of itself and unfold according to its own internal, self-perpetuating logic. The Reciprocity between Faith and Sacraments in the Sacramental Economy — 5. The sacramental reality of participation in the mystery of grace can only be understood in the unity of this double dimension of the symbolic experience: cognitive and performative. Where the scientistic paradigm reigns, which is blind to symbolic thought, sacramental thought is obstructed.[8] 6. Thirdly, we must still point to a significant cultural change, proper to the new civilization of the image, which poses a new problem to the theological clarification of sacramental faith. While it is true that rationalist modernity minimized the cognitive value of the symbol, contemporary postmodernity nevertheless exalts with great intensity the performative power of images. Thus, it is necessary to overcome the rationalist (modern) prejudice against the cognitive value of the symbolic, without falling into the opposite (postmodern) excess, which reduces the effectiveness of the symbol towards the emotional power of representation, empty of reference. In other words, Christian intelligence must preserve the originality of the Christian sacrament from the risk of double emptying. On the one hand, there is a danger of reducing the symbol-sacrament to the status of a mere cognitive sign that just easily gathers the doctrinal meanings of the faith, without operating any transformation (elimination of the performative dimension of the symbol-sacrament). On the other hand, there is a danger of reducing the symbol-sacrament to the pure aesthetic suggestion carried out by means of its ritual staging, according to the logic of a mere representation that replaces the interior adherence to the symbolized reality of the mystery (suppression of the cognitive dimension). 2017 Maps of Meaning 08: Neuropsychology of Symbolic Representation - YouTube — In this lecture, I discuss the relationship between the basic categories of imagistic/symbolic representation and brain function, noting that the very hemispheres of the brain are adapted, right/left to the environmental or experiential permanence of chaos/order or unexplored/explored territory, with consciousness serving the Logos role of communicative explorer (a function related in one of its deepest manifestations to the function of the hypothalamically grounded dopaminergic systems). JD Flynn and Catholic Independent Journalism

We interview him and ask questions from our Patreon supporters. If you'd like to get involved in 2021 in Catching Foxes, become a supporter today! We think investigating stories that matter can help the Church to better serve its sacred mission, the salvation of souls. Special Guest: JD Flynn.Sponsored By:BetterHelp.com: Get 10% off your secure, specialized counseling at BetterHelp.com/foxes Support Catching FoxesLinks:"The American Project" from Luke Carey, unedited | Gomer and Luke on Patreon — I asked Luke to record an intro to the episode with JD Flynn that would comment on the destruction and protests in Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, due to family constraints, I couldn't record with him. But it was all the better for it.  Here is the (mostly) unedited 25-minute long recording that Luke sent me at 11 at night.  I told him I had to edit it down to 10-minutes max to fit our current show, but really liked it. So, I wanted to post it on here in full. I gave it the title "The American Project". Proclaiming Christ in fractured America - The Pillar — It will take a while, I think, for most of us to be able to understand and articulate what it felt like to watch men in berzerker outfits and body paint run amok inside the U.S. Capitol building, to see a man making off with a podium bearing the seal of the House Speaker, to see police turn tail and run as a mob of angry Americans broke down barricades, scaled walls, and breached a building we have spent our lives believing is impenetrable. It will also take a while to understand just what it means that the president of the United States, who encouraged the mob’s march on the building, took pains to express his love for the marauders, and nod to the righteousness of their cause, even as he instructed them to go home. The Pillar — Our focus is on investigative journalism, which is how we’ll spend most of our time. We think investigating stories that matter can help the Church to better serve its sacred mission, the salvation of souls. 'The Pillar' - Because there is a need - The Pillar — The Catholic landscape is increasingly crowded with self-appointed experts and personality ‘brands’ offering hot takes and half takes on Church events, often without the context or background to make sense of what is happening. At the same time, reflexive tribalism often colors how events are interpreted or explained. Fired EWTN host Gloria Purvis: 'I will never, ever, ever have regrets' for discussing race | National Catholic Reporter — Purvis said when she was given word of the cancellation by Jack Williams, EWTN Radio's general manager, she was given no reason — nor, she added, had she ever been given any indication that things were amiss or that the show's performance was not up to expectations. In fact, according to Purvis, "that was the first time I talked to Jack — or Jack talked to me — in months."

Yearly Themes 2021 Edition
THE 2020 HOLIDAYS What does A Very Special Carey Christmas look like? What does The Gormley Family Christmas Celebration entail? You'll find out in the opening 10 minutes. Then we dive into our very different New Years' Eve activities for another 20 minutes. We are very wordy, but it all flows into our annual YEARLY THEMES SHOOOOOOOOW! YEARLY THEMES FOR 2020 REVIEWED Luke evaluates Gomer's 2020 theme of Habit and Gomer evaluates Luke's 2020 theme of Committment. Then they both do some self-examination and get a bit more critical of themselves. AKA, This is where Gomer sucks. We also realize how ADHD impacts us and how to adjust accordingly. For instance, Luke prays the Rosary when he gets to a certain part of the highway and Gomer lays out his stuff YEARLY THEMES FOR 2021 The Year of Humility. Gomer realized through abandoning social media that he has been justifying his own self-righteousness and gossipping about others if he perceives an injustice by that person to him. Alasdaire MacIntyre talks about the virtues of Justice, Humility, and Patience are all required to acquire a new craft. Justice means giving to experts and mentors their due. Humility (and humiliations) means repeated failures in public in order to get the flywheel spinning on learning a new talent. Patience means being patient with myself as a stumble forward. This applies to Gomer's workouts and scheduling appointments with doctors and dentists. He is getting anxiety just typing this! The Year of Falling In Love with the Process. Luke realized with the Graduate School and the baby, he's going to be drinking from a firehose. This means limiting intentionally all of the other distractions that hit him. Setting minimums allow him to reduce the friction around good actions and habits, but with being open to going longer on the good stuff, like praying for 15 minutes. He should pray for 30, but sometimes that creates a daunting effect on his ADHD mind, so he will only commit to 15 and if it goes longer, great! The goal is to fall in love with the process. TOP FIVES OF 2020 Luke's Top Fives: Watched the movie Silence, building the Catching Foxes Team, discovering Chess this year, the run that Catholic Stuff You Should Know is currently on, and Everyly being born and all of the things that went into that! Gomer's Top Fives: The Carnivore diet, my new leadership position in the parish, writing a chapter in a book that will come out in a couple of months, My New York City trip with Shannon, and Cecilia's First Confession and Holy Communion.Support Catching Foxes

A Canticle for Leibowitz, with apologies to Matt Fradd
Luke and I discuss the astounding book, A Canticle for Leibowitz, by Walter Miller Jr. Written in the 1950's at the height of the Cold War, Miller saw the specter of nuclear annihilation before him and penned this, one of the most insightful post-apocalyptic books ever written. We explore the themes as well as the original Dark Ages, and the drama of faith and reason. Then Luke ends with a VERY SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! When it becomes the only tool it brings about a mixture of certainty and naivety that makes minds brittle. Since Descartes’ time, rationalist thinking has ascended beyond primacy, to become an attempt at vacating not only other faculties, but also other motivations and desires. This over-applied rationality is a cognitive stupor, the drunken delirium of reason. To append an -ist or -ism and declare it one’s ideology can be forgiven as a phase of youth, since all of youth is a stupor of one thing or another. But after that it becomes cringe, or a kind of heartlessness, or simply the absence of wisdom.  Amazon.com: A Canticle for Leibowitz (Audible Audio Edition): Walter M. Miller Jr., Tom Weiner, Blackstone Audio, Inc.: Audible Audiobooks — In a nightmarish, ruined world, slowly awakening to the light after sleeping in darkness, the infantile rediscoveries of science are secretly nourished by cloistered monks dedicated to the study and preservation of the relics and writings of the blessed Saint Isaac Leibowitz. From there, the story spans centuries of ignorance, violence, and barbarism, viewing through a sharp, satirical eye the relentless progression of a human race damned by its inherent humanness to recelebrate its grand foibles and repeat its grievous mistakes. Ratzinger Excerpt — From John Hayward's Twitter account, @johnhw "Come Holy Spirit, synergise those key deliverables." He then follows it up with a picture of this fantastic Ratzinger excerpt. Is Dropping Its 2021 Releases on HBO Max — From the Ringer Podcast Network Warner Bros. has announced it will stream all of its new films in 2021 on HBO Max, including Godzilla vs. Kong, In The Heights, Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, and Matrix 4. Why did this happen? What does it mean for movie theaters? Will other studios follow suit? Amanda and Sean do their best to parse a historic day.The Ratzinger Option - Crisis Magazine — Men in a totally planned world will find themselves unspeakably lonely. If they have completely lost sight of God, they will feel the whole horror of their poverty. Then they will discover the little flock of believers as something wholly new. A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller: Review » Renai LeMay — Reading A Canticle for Leibowitz is a little like reading other satires such as George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Sometimes it can be a little challenging to get through the pages because the real story of the novel is told between its lines, in the reader’s interpretation of its many satirical allusions, which are, of course, presented with a straight face. An Augustinian Wasteland: A Canticle for Leibowitz ~ The Imaginative Conservative — A Canticle for Leibowitz has been one of my favorite books for most of my adult life. I have read it and reread it many times. In fact, I have read it and perused it too many times to count. I find the work as compelling as the best of T. S. Eliot. But, while Eliot always leavens, Miller always sobers. In Canticle, one discovers some of Eliot’s thought, but also Christopher Dawson’s and Jacques Maritain’s thought and especially St. Augustine’s thought. Much like his fifth-century forebear, Miller places a variety of anthropologies and humanisms before the reader, as well as competing visions of history. Unlike his North African counterpart, though, Miller never answers his own questions and puzzles definitively. The reader remains restless, for he never rests in Thee.
