CAP 04: Resume Templates: The 5 Things You Must Know
This episode expands on a blog post I wrote called “Resume Templates: The 5 Things You Must Know”. Here we take a look at the five biggest things to look for when selecting a resume template. Think of these items as hidden resume land mines that you will never know that you have stepped on. One of the most dangerous resume mistakes to make is thinking that any resume template will do. And as long as you fill it out thoroughly that it will get the right message across. Even if you are a shoe-in for the position. Every week I will have a candidate call me to follow up on a resume (that they sent into my office) that gets my blood pumping because I know I have found a diamond in the rough. The rough being the resume. These calls begin with me not very excited because from the looks of the resume, they are in no way qualified or even a candidate I would work with. But by the end of the call I realize that they are a victim of either a bad template or bad resume writing. Actually, it is usually both. These are the candidates who are fantastic, but they are not getting interviews because they are not displaying the right message. More on that in another post. But in the end…..it all begins with the proper template. CAP 03: Resume Objectives – Why To Never Do One And What To Do Instead
One of the fastest ways to know if an online resume builder, resume writer or resume template is worth a darn at all is to simply look for a resume objective. If you see one…run. In this episode I will explain the number one rule when it comes to resume objectives. Why you should not do one. And what to do instead. I quickly outline the candidate summary. A much more effective substitute for a resume objective that will help your reader get much more out of your resume faster. I also quickly walkthrough an example of a candidate summary to help you better grasp the concept. In the Resume Accelerator I really dive into this breaking it down to a science (while making it very easy). The exercises in those modules are the very ones I have used to take people from not being able to get a single interview, to literally having employers calling them and making an offer within a few weeks. Of course I can’t promise you the same result. But, the point is a properly written candidate summary that includes what the reader / employer is looking for, can dramatically increase the options you have in your job search by getting you in front of more prospective employers. In This Episode You Will Learn The fastest way to know if a resume builder, resume writer or resume template is any good Why you should not be doing a resume objective What to do instead How to write a candidate summary Resume Writing and Job Search Resources Mentioned The Resume Accelerator Resume Objectives: The #1 Rule (Blog Post) Thank You...Really! CAP 02: Why Resume Writing is SO Different Now Than It Used To Be
The world is changing…fast. The top marketers and advertisers in the world are constantly having to adjust how to deliver their message. So here is the question: Then why are people still teaching (and writing) resumes the same way they did 50 years ago? In this episode I discuss how your resume is really a marketing document for you. It is the first impression that you give others about your background, skills and abilities. Writing an effective resume is more important now than ever. The internet is delivering more candidates, that’s more competition for you; at a faster rate than ever. Employers have less time to spend per resume. On average less than ten seconds! Which means you have only a few seconds to hook your reader. Convincing them that you are worthy of an interview. More so than the others in the pile. We will address this issue and dive more into how the resume writing and job search process has changed along with what you need to be doing to get the edge in writing your resume. In This Episode You Will Learn: How marketers and advertisers have adjusted to the faster pace of society How this relates to writing your resume What is so different about your resume / job search today Why you and how you need to adjust to get the edge Resume Writing, Job Search and Other Resources Mentioned Free resume template CAP 03: Resume Objectives Why To Never Do One And What To Do Instead Resume Objectives: The #1 Rule (Blog Post) Burma Shave Ads Thank You...Really!
