Episode 2 – Sound Bites at The Battersea Canteen
Soundbites is a new podcast based feature from The Chef Foundation & Food for the Soul working with and supporting Carecasters & Sugarbox who produce and manage all Soundbites podcasts. Carecasters is a registered charity supporting and giving a voice to the caring community throughout the UK. For this first podcast in the series Soundbites visited The Battersea Canteen in South London providing meals, comfort and support to the less fortunate in our society. Homelessness, surviving in London on a low income and loneliness, particularly amongst the elderly, are BIG issues throughout the capital right now. Whilst the government shuffles its feet on reducing the numbers sleeping rough and the Mayor of London makes bold promises about affordable housing it is left to those on the shop floor to actually do anything about this and help support those less fortunate and in need of assistance. There are lots of very worthwhile charitable bodies in London doing a fabulous job. Crisis, Centrepoint, SHP and many others all do very valuable work. One, lesser known, but also very effective and worthwhile group recently launched a new Tuesday night initiative in South London. The Battersea Canteen is a collaboration between Be-Enriched and The London Cooking Project. Together they provide an evening meal, support and company for homeless, low income, disadvantaged or lonely people in the community. The food is all surplus produce donated by local shops and markets and is cooked and served by volunteers. The Soulfoodguru went down to meet this group, find out more about what they do and help cook and serve the supper.
