EP 46 | HARMONY
Who is Kiné? Kiné is a best selling author, international speaker, and psychotherapy specializing in financial therapy because money is the number one reason couples get divorced. Kiné started out in the financial services industry almost 20 years ago, working with companies like Ameriprise Financial, New York Life, and Morgan Stanley. Before entering the financial world she became the spokesperson for ABCs Extreme Makeover show. Kiné was in magazines like Elle, Marie Claire, TV guide & People. On television shows like Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, the E! Channel and Oprah. This led her to public speaking. Kiné is also the CEO of Presidential Lifestyle, a wellness company focused on wealth in all of its forms. The motto at Presidential Lifestyle is "money can buy happiness if you you know what truly makes you happy." The mission is to help couples become a winning team in love, life and money. Using a library of resources called Prosperity Club. "In an effort to give my tribe, my daughter, and myself a shot at marriage success, I created Prosperity Report “Love & Money” podcast. While others are focused on what’s going wrong with marriage we focus on what’s going well," says Kiné Corder. Kiné has dedicated her life to relieving the pain in the world and she does it through her coaching, courses, and speaking engagements.  What is feeling Successful? When people say, “Well, Kiné said…” when they’re making positive moves and changes. Giving advice and tools to people who then actually utilize it in order to make good moves in their lives… is just fantastic. What is feeling Burnt Out? Getting to the breaking point, sort of like rock bottom. From the metaphysical standpoint, burnout is when someone is struggling against the universe. Universal intelligence, in Kiné’s view, is tell you “Hey! Let’s go this way,” but you decide to go a different way and the universe responds, “Okay, well it’s just going to get harder then.” The Burnt Out Experience Kiné’s Story Right now, Kiné is attempting to move pieces of her business online, but she has to continually take on clients and do her usual workload while attempting to accomplish this goal. It’s as if she has to do her full job twice over to make it happen. She’s also getting impatient with how long this process takes and says to herself “I can’t wait to have this done!” She’s obviously excited too, but it’s so hard. In her previous business, Kiné also burnt out because she values being available, but didn’t place any boundaries around that value. So, Kiné’s clients were calling her all day, all hours, and it was a tough spot to be in. She knew on one day when she was recording a video and attempting to smile, but it was so fake! She cried that day and is, as she puts it, “not a crier.” Advice for you Can’t wait? Yes, you can. Ban yourself from saying “I can’t wait.” Instead, allow yourself to look positively toward the future while also staying positivie about the here and now by saying “I’m going to enjoy it when…” Over or Underachievers Some of us need reminding to get on top of our to-do lists and make some stuff happen, but others of us need reminding that it doesn’t ALL happen in one day. Make sure you leave some things to do for tomorrow, alright? For underachievers: Why do tomorrow what you can do today? For overachievers: Why do today, what you can do tomorrow? Remember what it’s like Think of the last time you were burnt out, remember what you gain from it. If your experience gave you a mentality of “poor me,” turn it around for yourself. Become victorious in your story this time around instead. If you haven’t been burnt out before, try to understand what you really want to feel. Successful, complete, loved? Take steps to specifically get there – think outside the box, start small, and attempt to redefine what’s necessary for you to feel how you want.   Listener Questions These are questions you all have submitted for us to ask our guests! 45 | GOOD
What does it really mean to have a GOOD job? Andie Daisley, Child Life Specialist, vocalist, and blog writer had a massive, miserable experience with getting Burnt Out because a "good" job, wasn't what she thought it would be. Who is Andie? Andie Daisley was born and raised in Washington and is a major PNW enthusiast. As a Certified Child Life Specialist, she marvels at the strength, brilliance and pure hearts of children on a daily basis. Andie is an anxious introvert who loves people, but hates small talk. She strives every day to allow herself and those around her the space to really feel and share their experiences. The good, bad, and ugly. What is feeling Successful? For Andie, success means finding balance in life. For her, success is being able to pursue the things she wants to do. What is feeling Burnt Out? On the Camino de Santiago, Andie had times where she wished for an airlift to the next destination because it could be so hard to keep putting one foot in front of the other on a 500 mile journey. She did say though, that thought the Camino was hard, she wouldn't have actually taken the airlift out if it was offered to her; she would've taken an airlift out of a few seasons of life to get to where she is now though. The Burnt Out Experience Andie's Story Right out of college, where Andie studied Human Services, she applied for a large amount of jobs as per her mentors' advice. It's hard to get jobs within Human Services, so they said "You need to cast a wide net." Andie did just that. When a good job was offered to her, Andie took it. She picked up and moved to Tacoma, WA, even though she didn't feel ready to leave her college town where she felt a great sense of community. She took the job only because it was a "good" job and not because it was her passion. Andie also struggles with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. So, this anxiety combined with a job that wasn't right for her in a town that didn't feel like home... Andie burnt out and crashed. It was all about making money and having that "good" job and so Andie felt miserable. Her passions, goals, and soul felt malnourished and that just isn't "good." Advice for you What's Leading To Your Burnout Figure out what the feeling is that is causing our experience with getting burnt out. Andie gets burnt out in her current career - HER DREAM CAREER. That doesn't mean that she wouldn't prefer that airlift every once in a while, right? Think of Your Basic Needs If the reason your burnt out is because you're doing something that you love, but your going to hard, you might be forgetting about your basic needs. That's okay to do sometimes, but at some point you need to take a break and take care of your mental health, basic needs, and emotional wellbeing. 44 | INTRO
Burnt Out has some incredibly exciting new this week and every week moving forward. Listen now!! Who is Danielle? Hey, what's up! I'm Danielle Deike, 22 years old, straight out of Pleasanton, California...which despite the name isn't the most pleasant! I recently grabbed a degree in business with a focus in the area of non-profits and I currently work for two nonprofits that focus on building local communities in economic, sustainable, and social regards.  I just also happen to be THE BRAND NEW COHOST OF BURNT OUT!!! 🤩 What is feeling Successful? I think that to be successful can be two things: (1) How much my mom brags about me and my accomplishments to people we run in to and (2) the amount of impact I have on the people around me. For me, it's that feeling of walking into some fancy event or gala that everyone begged you to attend. What is feeling Burnt Out? Feeling burnt out to me is when you get to this point in your life when you just want to stop doing the things that you love and give up. It when I'm dreading something when I used to love it; the feeling of being lost. The Burnt Out Experience Danielle's Story I think I've been burnt out on a couple different occasions but nothing life altering...yet! 😅 The most recent experience I had was back in college. I was the VP of a sorority, which was also happened to be the largest sorority on campus with about 160 girls and when I was a Senior, I was getting to a point where I wanted nothing to do with it. I poured my blood, sweat, and tears into this organization and then, all of the sudden, I just felt like giving up all that effort.  Advice for you Big Picture Look at the big picture and the goal you want to achieve. At the same time, be aware of the people that surround you and look up to you. Remember Your Why Circle back to your Why: why you started, why you stayed, and why you don’t want to give up. Listener Questions These are questions you all have submitted for me to ask my guests! If you have any others to add, please share with me. What does leadership mean to you? Someone that can lift everyone up with them at the same time. Constantly team focused and brings their team along for the ride. Who do you look up to? Growing up I was constantly obsessed with looking up to someone that has achieved that success and that leader at the same time. When I was young, it was Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Blackwell. Currently though, I look back to spending this entire summer in Belize. My “boss”/ director that I worked under became that leader and role model that I have always wanted in my life. 43 | CARE
Just don't care anymore? Filmmaker Stephanie Cullen has been there before!! In this episode CARE with Stephanie, we explore her experience with not being able to care, what caused it, and how she got through it. Listen now!  Who is Stephanie? Stephanie is a filmmaker both professionally and personally, really in every aspect of her life. She creates corporate videos by day and short films, documentaries, and music videos by nights and weekends. Stephanie also volunteers her time and skills to non-profits and small businesses to help them grow and promote their efforts through film. When she's not running all over Boise with a camera in one hand and a micro-brew in the other, she's playing with her dog Frodo, and three cats Bandit, Ashtoreth, and Osiris. What is feeling Successful? Actually completing a project. That doesn't mean Stephanie has a film to show other people one that wins awards, but one she internally feels complete and meaningful to the people involved. What is feeling Burnt Out? Reaching the end of caring for something. When you wake up in the morning and realize "I really don't care about anything that's about to happen today." The Burnt Out Experience Stephanie's Story In January 2015, Stephanie got a new job, in March she got a divorce, and in May she started school. So, for the next 32 months, Stephanie worked full-time, went to school full-time, and was dealing with the aftermath of ending a 14 year marriage. During that time, Stephanie's friends helped her with school projects and instead of money payment, Stephanie promised each friend an IOU. She promised to work on whatever projects her friends needed her for after she graduated. The week after graduation, ALL the emails started rolling in. It was project overload immediately after finishing school, but Stephanie promised and she set to work for the next three months on other people's projects. This is was the breaking point... Stephanie started to feel like she no longer cared about any of it anymore. She was burnt out. Advice for you Feel it It's okay to feel this way. It's going to happen at some point. But recognize it and don't stay in it for too long. Do Something Different If you're burnt out, find something different to do. Like Stephanie said, she's a filmmaker. It's her full-time job, it's her side-hustle, and it's her passion/hobby. So when burnout comes around, Stephanie has found that hitting the gym is a fantastic release that is nothing like making films. It helps her clear her head and get into a different space for a little while. Exercise Ya'll know at this point that I LOVE when guests remind us to keep active for our mental health. Stephanie said that her personal trainer genuinely changed her life because having someone keep you honest and accountable for your fitness level, your eating habits, and mental state is so helpful. 42 | ROUTINE
Your only routine shouldn't JUST be skin care, but that's definitely part of it! Cheryl Pierce is the founder and CEO of Skinworx and is not only driving you toward a good skin care routine, but also toward healthy routines in all areas of life to proactively avoid getting burnt out.  Who is Cheryl? All of us seem to understand the connection between beauty and confidence intuitively. However did you know that in today’s fast paced society only 2% of women rate themselves as naturally gorgeous without makeup and over 50% of women don’t feel confident making eye contact without sufficient makeup (source: skinstore.com). Skin issues, such as acne, wrinkles and discoloration are the most common concerns of people today. While these may seem like minor problems, skin issues can lead to major depression, social with drawl, anger, lack of confidence and more.  According to Psychology Today, American adults with psoriasis are 3 times more to have suicidal thoughts and adults with acne have higher rates of unemployment then then general population. These numbers are completely breathtaking. Cheryl Pierce, the founder and CEO of Skinworx saw these issues first hand as a wound care nurse. When she realized the tremendous impact that beauty has on self-esteem and confidence, she opened up Skinworx, a medical spa and skincare store and made it her mission to help women find their confidence and, ultimately, unlock their full potential. The latest addition to the full-service spa services, are confidence boosting retreats. Hosted by Cheryl, the focus is onto helping women align their outer and inner beauty through a combination of meditation, personal growth work and related treatments. What is feeling Successful? A balance in every area of my life. Having money is part of it, for sure. But it's being able to do what you want, when you want, with whoever you want! That's success. What is feeling Burnt Out? Feeling miserable. It's not getting enough sleep, not eating the right foods, and just exhausted. The Burnt Out Experience Cheryl's Story When she first had her baby, Cheryl really went through a lot. She admitted that she stopped at one child because of the burnout associated with becoming the mother of an extremely colicky baby... "Talk about sleep deprivation." It was one straight year of not enough sleep and trying to figure out parenthood on her own. Advice for you Routine You have GOT to have routine in your life. Just like you'd have to train your baby to have a daily routine, you need to train yourself  to have routines. You have to have a set times for yourself to sleep, work, play, learn, all of it. How we do something, is how we do everything. So if you have poor personal routine, you're going to end up with poor professional routines, etc. Create for yourself and follow healthy routines to maximize your capacity for passion and drive, but also to proactively avoid getting burnt out. Meredith is a leader who genuinely listens. You can tell when she talks about all her adventures with FX makeup and how she listens to her interns, business partners, and friends who all help point her in the right direction. Who is Meredith? Meredith Johns is an Emmy nominated makeup and FX makeup artist as well as owner of Hawgfly Productions, Inc. She grew up in a family of artists who shaped her to be the creative individual she is today. In 2003 she began her professional film career and discovered the world of makeup FX. She fell in love with the crazy adventures of film making and in 2004 she met business partner Carolyn O’Hara, left her budding graphic design career and started Hawgfly. She loves making creatures and makeup/hair art pieces and has traveled the world with her projects. Her favorite part of her craft is the constant challenge. And, she particularly enjoys incorporating innovative technologies and techniques into her designs. What is feeling Successful? Doing what you love every day. Even when there are miserable days, but your mind keeps going back to "Well, I could be doing not this..." and reminding yourself that you do love your job. What is feeling Burnt Out? It's a reality. It's overwhelm. Because Meredith works so many hours (80 HOURS) and her max amount of projects to be working on at once is SIXTEEN. So, first of all, Meredith obviously loves her job quite a lot... So, her burnt out experience comes on quite a bit later than would my own, but she does know her limits. She would have to as an Emmy nominated makeup/FX artist! Beyond 80 hours and beyond 16 projects at once, Meredith hits her breaking point. The Burnt Out Experience Meredith's Story There have been a few instances of fetal position on the kitchen floor in tears. Meredith doesn't like to fail, which she admits is a potential cause of her burnt out experiences. Meredith wants to do whatever it takes to get her projects done and done well. Advice for you Make a list If you can make a list of everything you need to do and then prioritize them, you can make your days so much easier. Now, by saying "priority" Meredith does explain that the low hanging fruit should come first if possible. Answering a quick email can feel so mundane and irritating when there are so many big tasks on your list, but checking off the little things first and quickly can make the rest of your day, or your task list, so much better. "Whew! One less thing to deal with." Exercise Running gets Meredith's mind out of the funk. In the thick of work, sometimes she can't see the forest through the trees. So, when this funk is too much, Meredith will run and run and run until her mind is clear. She also trains with Kristina Olson, who has been on the Burnt Out Podcast previously, and the two of them will innovate and brainstorm while their working out. It helps Meredith leave her work behind, get moving, get creative, and distract her mind from the current stressors. Once her mind is clear for a bit, its easy to go back to those stressors with an open mind and clear goals. Listener Questions These are questions you all have submitted for me to ask my guests! 40 | FORWARD
The ability and desire to consistently be moving forward in life is both a blessing and a curse.  Listen now to here successful filmmaker, Giovanna Sarquis, tell both sides of her story moving forward. Who is Giovanna? Giovanna Sarquis is a filmmaker, who is eager to inspire people and touch people emotionally through her films – much in the way her favorite films have impacted her in her youth. Born in Mexico and educated in the U.S., her cultural background impacts how she looks at film as a medium for storytelling and the way she uses the camera. Giovanna refers to her typical genre as “magical realism”, which connects mysticism and sci-fi with humanity. As a gay female Latina, Giovanna hopes to humanize diversity and help viewers relate to others who don’t match their norms. Giovanna has worked on many films and series, including the web series “Before I Got Famous” and the short films “Lately” and “Submerged”. Giovanna’s 2015 short, “Crayons” was nominated for “Best Short Film “ and “Best Director. Most recently Giovanna has been working on two scriptwriting projects, “Ascensions” a sci-fi/thriller feature film and “Lipstick” a television pilot. She is also currently writing a full-length script for her 2016 short comedy “Cupcakes” that is being developed into a feature film. What is feeling Successful? Being able to do what you like everyday. Sometimes, when Giovanna is writing and doing her job, it blows her mind that it's real. She doesn't ever feel like her job is a job! She gets to live her passion. What is feeling Burnt Out? It feels like a lot of things... In the beginning it feels like frustration for Giovanna. Also, the need to make things work and find the answer when things are working out. It's not rejecting no for an answer, but it's more like needing the why behind the answer in order to move forward. Giovanna has had to carve out her own path in life and while that gave her the mindset of always being able to find a way forward, that experience is also extremely exhausting. The Burnt Out Experience Giovanna's Story She first came to the United States for her undergraduate degree in filmmaking. She felt like that experience wasn't quite enough though. She needed more training to be able pursue her passion, she didn't have much time to figure out the next step due to the immigration processes, and she was filled with anxiety. Giovanna didn't qualify for the artist visa because she did have enough projects yet. She thought, "Maybe this would just be easier back home..." but it wouldn't. She said, "There's just not as much freedom as there is here. You can write about so many things and you can reach so many audiences." Going back home wasn't the option for Giovanna; she wouldn't be able to write the way she wanted to. It really felt like all the odds were against her. Language barriers, immigration, school processes, etc. Advice for you Easier said than done Work on and move past your anxiety. Grab a pen and paper and write down all the options. What did you do and what were the results? Try not to take it personally There are external factors to life. Always. When things don't work out how you want or how you expected, at least you tried. Life isn't against you, it's just that not everything works out ALL the time. Take what you can from those experiences where it wasn't a total win, and learn from them. 39 | GO
Nikki Woods is always on the go and admitted to being burnt out for the majority of her career!! She doesn't necessarily see that as a bad thing... listen to find out why.   Who is Nikki? Nikki Woods is a published author, speaker, 20 year media strategist, 5 year entrepreneur, and blogger. She is well-known for her work as the senior producer on the Tom Joyner Morning Show.   Now, Nikki works to empower experts and authors who have the desire to build a sustainable brand to establish their authority, build platforms, and attain visibility through new and traditional media. What is feeling Successful? For Nikki, the definition of success is constantly changing; always on the go. It’s totally different depending on where you are in your personal and professional life. Once you reach one goal, you’re on to the next and so you’re consistently leveling-up your version of success. As a general theme though, success for Nikki is being happy with what you’re doing and loving life. What is feeling Burnt Out? Nikki can’t remember a time she took a vacation that wasn’t work related. She was never disconnected from the rest of the world. She was always go, go, go! That constant overwhelm is sort of how Nikki defines her version of burnt out, but she also viewed that as a badge of honor for a long time. She was working hard and it showed and that was a sort of success during her time producing media. The Burnt Out Experience Nikki’s Story Nikki admits that she was probably burnt out for 80% of her career. The media industry became a whole different beast not long after she started her career. She had to cater to the 24 hour, 365 days a year news cycle where she and her team were always trying to find the latest and the greatest stories to get better ratings. To add to that, Nikki worked the “morning” shift for 20 years – meaning she was waking up at 2:30-3:00 AM to start work while still having to go for the full day because she had her family to spend time with. All of that together created this constant sense of overwhelm and she was always sitting on the edge of burning out. As a caveat, she still loved this job and couldn’t think of a better place for her. Advice for you Focus on the Good Recognize the energy you bring to your world. If you are only focusing on negative aspects of your world, that’s generally what you’ll get back. It’s a vicious cycle of feeling just plain bad. If you can look for and focus on the positives in your life and your career, that’s what you’ll get back. Go! If you know something is not working, do something to change it. Take action. 38 | SHOULD
The "Should Spiral" is what causes Becky Berry's burnt out experience. Let's find out what the heck that is! Who is Becky? Becky helps women stage their career comebacks. She has been everything from the owner of a software company, to social entrepreneur, to magazine publisher, to special education teacher, plus she did a 12-year stint as a stay-at-home mom.  Becky bring all of her experience to bear as she coaches women through the terror of figuring out what's next. What is feeling Successful? It’s about being content. It’s like a combination of happy, sad, striving, relaxing into whatever it is that’s going on in your life, PLUS friendships. Becky says that she is here today, standing on the shoulders of every woman (and man) friend she has ever had – so success is a stew of all those things. All these people together along with her own efforts and choices have made her feel successful. What is feeling Burnt Out? Becky is serial entrepreneur, which, for her, means that she has no idea what she did last week. This is also the reason she gets burnt out. She forgets all of her hard work and accomplishments because she’s always on to the next thing and thinks to herself, “I should be doing more.” And that, my friends, is the dangerous, blackhole of the Should Spiral. “I should be doing more. I should be accomplishing more. I should’ve started earlier.” The Burnt Out Experience Becky's Story This “Should Spiral” is Becky's recipe for tears. She is an entrepreneur, so apart from coaching people to lead better lives, she is also her own marketing agency, office administrator, finance specialist, decision maker – holy sh*t, right? That’s a lot!! So, when Becky starts spiraling into “I should have started marketing this earlier. I should be creating more content. I should be doing so much more…” it’s a disaster. It’s makes her feel shame. It makes her feel regret. It feels horrible. Advice for you Stop Yourself Becky says it to herself, out loud, wherever she is. When she recognizes she is in the Should Spiral, she sets herself straight. “STOP IT.” You are doing enough. You are enough. Don’t let “should” take away your power and confidence. Remind Yourself of Yesterday Write down all the tasks, project, chores you did yesterday or even last week. Walk through everything you did and try not to leave anything out. You will be amazed at all you accomplished. This will help get your mindset into the right place. You do A LOT!! Don’t forget that. Focus on Today Now, get ready to accomplish more today. Make a list, mind map, set of goals and go for it. Make it happen because you can, not because you “should”. Listener Questions These are questions you all have submitted for me to ask my guests! 37 | SURROUNDINGS
Karen Marie Jenkins believe her surroundings play a big part in getting burnt out, but also in contentment! Shall we find out why? Who is Karen? Karen Marie Jenkins is a visual brand artist, writer and personal brand/editorial photographer. She is the owner of Karen Marie Images & Branding, a personal brand/editorial photography business primarily serving women and girls. Her mission is to empower entrepreneurs, in particular business women by producing creative, and unique 'stand out' images that reflect their brand message and aligns with who they are. Karen Marie supports women by producing 'eye-catching' images that truly represent who they are and who they desire to be without apology. Karen Marie is invested not only in how business women and girls represent themselves, but in empowering them to embrace their power, authenticity and truth with confidence and style by creating an uplifting environment that produces engaging images that tell their story and visually represents their brand. What is feeling Successful? Success is having the freedom to pursue your passion and purpose. Previously, Karen was working at a college, and she liked it, she was good at it, but the idea of branding photography was just tugging at her. What is feeling Burnt Out? Cloudy thought, low energy, being indecisive, lack of motivation, just can't really direct yourself in any purposeful way... Just lost. The Burnt Out Experience Karen's Story Two year ago, before Karen moved to Atlanta to pursue her brand photography dream, she was feeling SO burnt out. She felt as though she had out grown her surroundings; the city that she lived in didn't understand her work. She got to the point to where she knew her surroundings wouldn't support her artistry and the entrepreneurial impulses. Altogether, the space she existed in wouldn't allow her to pursue her passion. Advice for you Rest & Silence Getting rest and being silent is important. Listening to yourself, feeling how you feel, yeah yeah... but also, it helps us to fight our impulsiveness when we are getting burnt out. Many a time, we impulsively make a huge life changes, purchase something big, or say something we might not mean, all because we feel sh*tty. Taking the time to rest and Write About It Karen's best blog content comes out when she incorporates her burnt out experiences. It's real, raw, and extremely relatable. What is feeling Successful? A lot of people equate success to how much money they're making. Regina isn't about that though. S he equate success to: "How many lives am I making an impact in?" If she can show another woman how to go from broken to unbreakable, that is success. Success is that ability to serve others and lift people up above you. Regina says that if you can do that, if you can serve other people, you'll receive an overflow of goodness back into your own life. What is feeling Burnt Out? Regina accepts that Burnt Out can mean a lot of different things, but the one common factor is the actual cause of getting burnt out; not having a plan. By the end of the week, you're burnt out if you didn't set a plan. You could go through that SAME EXACT week with a plan, and it would feel like an accomplishment. *Revelation moment for the host: I've never heard this perspective before and I LOVE it* The Burnt Out Experience Regina's Story Until three years ago, Regina didn't have it all together. During that time, she was still running a successful business, but the foundation that was holding that business afloat was crumbling; that foundation was Regina herself. She was helping to impact other people's lives, but she forgot to impact her own life. She experienced depression, hurt, and her rock bottom. Advice for you Pause/Reset The world would have you believe you can't press that button to pause and reset, but you can. During this time of pause, try to discover what it is you want to commit to moving forward in your life. Once you've found out what that thing or things are, put systems in place to make that happen. Get Clear Make a plan. Not just in your professional life with daily, weekly, monthly tasks and goal, but also in your personal life. Schedule time to recharge and take care of the foundation that holds your life up: YOU. Take Action Once you've taken time to recharge, you've made a plan, it's now time to make it happen. We could recharge and plan all day, but to make your life the way you envision it, it's time to take action. "The things in your mind don't exist until you speak it in existence, write it to affirm it, and take action to make it a reality." *Caution: Don't try to do everything at once. Pace yourself, but keep making it happen for yourself. Listener Questions These are questions you all have submitted for me to ask my guests! Let’s get Burnt Out with Andrea Hall! Who is Andrea? Andrea Hall is a wife, mom, transformational health coach, and recovering job juggler! Andrea holds a Masters of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling; is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Family Life Educator, and professional Communication Coach! She has a passion for seeing potential in uncommon faces. What is feeling Successful? Feeling successful is sort of like a mirage.. it's a good one though! It's like goal setting, but we all know that as soon as you reach that goal, you set another one father away. It's like picking up rocks... not one is the same and they all help build your gorgeous tower. What is feeling Burnt Out? For Andrea, feeling burnt out can mean a few different things. It could be not wanting to get out of bed, having a headache, when your stomach is in knots. Also, what are you doing at work? Is it the same thing every single day? Is it cookie cutter? Salt and pepper are good, but using only salt and pepper every single day get old. The Burnt Out Experience Andrea's Story Andrea was hired as an Area Director for a nonprofit. It started out great! She was connecting with the community and had cool responsibilities, but soon after, she felt micromanaged. That enough to burn someone out. Beyond that, Andrea also had NO room for creativity in her job. All the expectations were laid out for her, word for word, task by task. That's when she realized this was a cookie cutter job that just wasn't for her. So, she found a new one! Advice for you Don't make a move without a plan. Make a plan of action. Don't just jump to the next thing. A plan will make you think of you values, your network, and your options. Andrea's Caution: Don't tell everyone your plan! Make your plan and start making changes, but don't immediately let your plan be known. It might cause you to burn bridges you'll need in the future. Expand Your Nextwork If your network looks like you, talks like you, thinks like you, lives like you.... you need to step outside your comfort zone. It's important for us to grow as people and that means people challenging us, thinking differently, working differently, and telling us the hard things to hear. It can be painful, but it's important to keep your life fresh, new, and growing. Listener Questions These are questions you all have submitted for me to ask my guests! What is feeling Burnt Out? For Maddie, feeling burnt out means to feel completely overwhelmed - by work, by social efforts, and by life. It's all happening SO fast all around us that, sometimes, it can feel exhausting to try and keep up. The Burnt Out Experience Maddie's Story At work, Maddie has ENORMOUS responsibility. (I'm not implying that the rest of us don't, but c'mon... she's pretty impressive.)  Maddie's main issue is actually an issue that many of us have, but it seems like it shouldn't be such a big deal. IT IS THOUGH!! Emails are rough. Keeping on top of them, reading all of them, responding to them, taking the actions they often require, plus sorting through all the junk to find the important things.... whew! Yikes. Dealing with emails and all the work that comes from and goes along with them can be incredibly overwhelming, no doubt. Advice for you Get Organized. Maddie get proactive and gets organized with how she deals with all the emails.  Having a set process and priority schedule for your emails is incredibly helpful. It's worth it to take some time, write down how you should go about your emails, and pull that process from your notes each time you get overwhelmed.  Self love. You are ALLOWED to feel overwhelmed and burnt out, so make sure you honor that feeling. 34 | HH Courage Quotes
It’s extremely beneficial to remind ourselves now and again to live courageously. “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage,” (Anaïs Nin) Your ability to do something that is right or good, even if it’s hard, even if it makes you feel uncomfortable, even if it scares you, will bring more to your life. “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.” (John Wayne) But saddling up, that courage within, is not always, in fact it’s very rarely an action movie sequence where the hero defeats an enemy with poise and strength and everyone is left in awe of such a magnificent defeat. That would be pretty cool though. I like to visualize my inner victories in that manner sometimes. The truth is that “Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow’.” (Mary Anne Radmacher) At the end of the day, if you’re willing to try again, even when you feel like giving up, even when you’re burnt out, especially when you’re burnt out actually,  you are courageous and your life will expand to offer you more than you can hope for.   Sign up for the Burnt Out newsletter to receive a free download of phone backgrounds with these quotes about courage.

Let's get into the Burnt Out experience with Kelly Cooper. Kelly is the Founder and President of the Centre for Social Intelligence. Kelly's company helps organizations achieve the triple bottom line of sustainable development by investing in the people of an organization through things such as improving gender diversity, mental health and optimizing the performance of millennials. Kelly believes that by investing in these three areas, an organization is able achieve a greater return on their investment in their people, creating increased productivity, lower absenteeism, and a healthier work environment for all. The Burnt Out Experience *TRIGGER WARNING FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT* While Kelly had experience gender-based harassment at work from bosses and clients, this next scenario is really where she felt burnt out because of the actions of others imposed upon her.  She was exercising as per usual in the middle of the day. She had her walkman on and wan't able to hear the man approaching her. He grabbed her and put one hand on her body and the other down his own pants. This was a mortifying experience and the experience that Kelly feels was a burnt out moment due to another person's actions being imposed upon her.   Kelly goes on in this episode to talk about two amazing times in her life where the stars aligned in her life. She leaves us with an inspiring reminder that we're not in charge, we don't necessarily have control of our lives, but if you follow your dreams, the world will conspire to help you. How did she deal? Charge!! THIS IS NOT ADVICE TO YOU. What Kelly did is dangerous. She CHARGED and CHASED this person who had just assaulted her!!! While he could have had a weapon or done something to really alter Kelly's life in that moment, her only thought was "No way is this guy getting away with this." Luckily for Kelly, there was a police officer who saw what had happened, joined her in the chase, and ultimately caught and arrested the man. Kelly describes this as an empowering moment. She didn't think and her fight or flight response drove her to call this man out in a very physical, "fighting" way.  How, though, do you (metaphorically) charge or chase someone doing this in a workplace setting?  Set Boundaries The importance of setting boundaries is timeless and applicable in all areas of life.  The ability to do this can be scary, upsetting, or frustrating. NOT setting boundaries can cause women like us to think "Am I here because of the work that I do or the way that I look?"  That's not a situation that anyone should have to be in, which is why these boundaries can be helpful.  It can be as simple as saying "This is a professional relationship and you just crossed the line" but it also totally depends on who you are and what you're comfortable with.  Dig Deep "There is no greater motivator than children." It was important to Kelly to offer her kids a stable, healthy home, and a good role model. She describes her actions as digging deep to pull that off for the people who meant most to her and who needed her to be strong.  She thought back to what she has in her life which is many experiences and a good education, so she thought "there's nothing holding me back." What a positive self-awareness and thought process when her situation seemed very negative. Kelly goes through life day by day and doesn't allow anxiety to rule over her future. She figures it out as she goes and everything continues to fall into place as it should.  Leadership Listening Empathy Relating  Being a good role model Recognizing you don't have all the answers Notable Quotes “I've been humbled to realize that I'm not in control of my life.” "When you follow your dreams, the world conspires to help you."

32 | HH Myths of Successful People
3 Myths of Successful People They are more motivated than you No way.  Have you even been listening to the podcast?!  One of my favorite books explains that "motivation is a frail and fickle friend." It only comes around once-in-awhile and if you're waiting for it, you're not going anywhere.  Successful people aren't more motivated, they pursue commitment instead! In other words, successful people act independently of their thoughts that are saying "It would be more fun to watch tv," or "I really don't feel like it today," or "I'll just do it tomorrow." They just do what they know is right and good for them EVEN THOUGH, their mind is saying something else.  Soon, your thoughts will start to reflect your actions and you'll actually want to do those things that you previously procrastinated or didn't do altogether because they're hard. No one is saying these things aren't hard, but you can do it.  They say "Yes!" to everything Uh-uh.  My goodness you'd probably fall right off the earth if you tried to do everything. Remember Trina's episode??   You don't have time for that and neither do people you view as successful. What they (and you) can do is say yes to the opportunities that work toward their ideal future self, their goals, their mission statement.  Think about a business or campaign. There is usually a clearly defined mission statement that allows the decision makers to refer back to when they're in a tough situation and it guides them toward their answer.  You should have one for yourself too! Personally, professionally, etc. Where do you want to be in 2, 5, 10 year? Who do you want to be? Write it down! Refer back to it! Say "Yes!" to those opportunities that you believe align with your mission statement and say "No." to the things that don't. It's okay to say no!!  They know more than you  NOPE! We're only human. We can't know everything and rarely do we know the majority of what we need to complete a task, project, or goal.  That's great! As humans, we're also capable of continuous learning and growth, which is the mark of a truly successful person.  Say "Yes!" to that thing that aligns with your personal or professional mission statement, apply what you do know, and for what you don't know, learn as you go! Ask for help, get online, and be relentless about acquiring the new skills you need to complete a task.  Major Takeaway?  YOU have every skill necessary to become a successful person in your own eyes. To me? You already are.

After working in startups for 6 years, Briana Okyere now runs a global community of 600+ tech founders: Tech Founders. Her passion for helping emerging technologies and ideas was born out of her love and respect for the underdog. As the daughter of an African immigrant, and now on track to a C-level position at Founders Network, Briana is used to the fight, and her mission is to propel others who are currently in it. The Burnt Out Experience Just four months ago, Briana hit the end of her rope. She was planning a three-day conference in Napa Valley, which was stressful in itself.  A week before, the venue burned down. So... literal burnout.  Briana and her team pulled together to get a new venue, adjust the conference, and pull off a fantastic event. Awesome!  They went over the budget, had a really rough week, and Briana was left needing a breath.  How did she deal? Talk About It Briana is adamant that if you can't have honest conversations about the way you're feeling with the people you work with, then you shouldn't be working where you are.  To make honest conversations happen, Briana advocates for one-on-ones every week. She leaves room when she talks to her employees for personal emotions and life situations. It helps with work-life balance and it helps with work culture. During these one-on-ones, she helps her employees name their stressors, and then create an action plan to work through those stressors.  Routine During this stressful time, Briana had fallen out of her usual habits of exercise and eating right. She took a step back and remembered that "work-life balance" and "self care" aren't just buzz words. They're REAL and necessary for keeping yourself from burning out.  Leadership Listening Respect Authenticity Trust Notable Quotes “Just be yourself. Everyone will find out who you are eventually, so you might as well start off as you.”

What is Success? To laugh often and much;  To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;  To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;  To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived;  This is to have succeeded. -Emerson

Anna Foat loves the power of possibility and the passion of entrepreneurs. She’s worked at a start up, grown with one of the most famous Canadian scale ups (and subsequent crashes) and now works for a major financial services firm in Canada advising the chief transformation officer on digital transformation. The Burnt Out Experience About a year ago, Anna was working with a startup up. They circled and circled around how they could get the business model to work and to scale. She spent months working at it. She felt like there was so much noise in her head that the answer was there, she just couldn't hear it.  As hard and as much as she worked at it, she felt like she wasn't getting any closer to the solution. She felt like she was just circling the drain.  How did she deal? Quiet Your Mind Anna went up North for a few days and took a long walk on the beach to clear her mind.  Suddenly, she had a genuine epiphany! While she was enjoying her surroundings, it ALL came to her. Why the work they were doing wasn't working, why their approach wasn't going to work moving forward, and what they needed to do to fix it.  The point is, you need to let your brain relax sometimes and become quite. Sometimes, we are working as hard as we can, as much as we can, and as smart as we can, but things still aren't working. Let your brain become quiet to help you understand that there are external factors that are holding you back. It's out of your control.  Exercise Just like her quite time on the beach, Anna loves to go to hot yoga. It's great exercise, it's meditate, and it's good for your brain.  Self Advocate When you're working hard, delivering great work, and bringing it all to the table, the people who benefit from your good work have a hard time remembering that you're grinding yourself to the bone.  You have to TELL them you need a break. You're probably the go-to person if you're doing good work, but you have to self advocate for time off, self care practices, and taking on less work every once-in-awhile.  Leadership Focus on the people first, not the goal Lead from the back Take all the part and make a recipe, not the other way around Notable Quotes “Sometimes you just need to shut up so that insight can whisper in your ear."r "It took a long time to be okay with doing the things I want to do and not the things people were asking me to do.”
