B'WAY HR w/ Bob Jones #2 DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS JR., Louis Botto, Elaine Stritch
THE BROADWAY HOUR with BOB JONES, show #2, originally broadcast January 9, 1989 - taped in front of a live audience at the ALGONQUIN HOTEL, 59 West 44th St., New York, NYHost: BOB JONESELAINE STRITCH - COMPANY "The Ladies Who Lunch" Broadway legend Elaine Stritch was Broadway's toughest broad. She had a career that ranged from Noël Coward's last musical to Tina Fey's first sitcom. When Coward saw Stritch's 1962 Tony award-nominated performance in his "Sail Away," the British playwright noted in his diary that she sang "so movingly that I almost cried." Almost five decades later, in 2007, Stritch earned an EMMY for her guest turn as Alec Baldwin's cantankerous mother on "30 Rock." Stritch's Roman Catholic parents allowed her to move to New York City from Michigan in 1944 to study acting at The New School (Marlon Brando was a classmate), but only if she lived in a convent. She landed her first Broadway role in 1946 and continued performing in New York City until her retirement in 2013. -IMDbLOUIS BOTTO - Senior editor PLAYBILL / Louis Botto, the dapper "At This Theatre" columnist, writer and editor for Playbill for more than 40 years, A primary source for Botto's columns was his theatergoing diary, in which he listed not only the shows he saw, but whom he saw them with, where he ate, what he thought of the show, and any anecdotes about the show he collected in his conversations with its stars and creators. His diaries are echoed in the format of Playbill's new website, the Playbill Memory Bank (PlaybillMB.com)DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS JR. -His film career began at the age of 13 when he was signed by Paramount Pictures. He debuted in Stephen Steps Out (1923) but the film flopped and his career stagnated despite a critically acclaimed role in Stella Dallas (1925). Things really picked up when he married Lucille Le Sueur, a young starlet who was soon to become better known as Joan Crawford. The young couple became the toast of the town (one "Screen Snapshots" episode echoes this sudden glory) and good parts and success followed, such as the hapless partner of Edward G. Robinson in Little Caesar (1931). -IMDb______________________________________________________________________ Enjoy our other podcasts: “BROADWAY HOUR-Sheraton NY Hotel & Towers 1993-1996” https://thebroadwayhournyc.buzzsprout.comGuests include: Jule Styne, Leslie Gore, Mayor Rudy Guiliani, Barbara Feldon, Tony Randall, Jazz legend: Doc Cheatham, Helen Reddy, Michael Feinstein, Jackie Mason, Carol Channing, Sheldon Harnick, Leslie Uggams, Warren Vache’ Quartet, Linda Lavin, Michael Cerveris, + many, many more…. ______________________________________________________________________ Produced by KATE McGRATH MEDIA PRODUCTIONSPost-Production: Dan Cornfeld Recording, Engineer-STEVE DEYLocation Recording Engineer: TIM ROBERTSDirector: CHARLOTTE McGRATHRestoration Engineer & Editing: CHRIS BREETVELDFor more info, comments or fan mail: nycbroadway.podcasthours@gmail.com
